Celeste Really is That Good

So I played Celeste for the first time. I did a blind run and I have some thoughts. Celeste is a platformer that has a story about anxiety and depression and is all about a girl climbing a mountain...kind of. It's a beloved game on Steam and so here we go.

the fact that it took you until chapter 4 to realize that they've been introducing more than 2 mechanics each chapter says more about the game than it does about you
@ACEYGAMES
@ACEYGAMES 8 месяцев назад
Mechanics introduced in the prologue: movement, climbing, falling obstacles, pits and dashing. Mechanics introduced in chapter 1: strawberries and winged strawberries, exploration, puzzles, moving platforms, spikes, jump pads, and a whole bunch more if you fully explore it. Celeste just does the introductions so naturally and the twists on gameplay are usually instantly understandable.

"Streamer blindness" is a real phenomenon. Games will often put visual cues during moments of downtime: the kind of moments that streamers often look away from their game to read chat. And so, streamers regularly miss the cues the game was giving to guide the player. Also, splitting attention between game and audience can just make it slower to figure things out too.

It is quite interesting seeing someone with basically no experience not only playing a game as hard as celeste, but also literally ignoring 99% of collectibles. Hey Thoarbin, the thing you said about puzzles? I'm pretty sure that's how everyone works, there are some you're great at and some you need more experience with that kinda thinking or that puzzle's 'language' and, much like how once you've learnt a language its obvious what's being said, when people learn a puzzle's language they don't see how you couldn't easily or instantly solve it. So uh dont take people calling your slow or bad at puzzles to heart, its jsut a language you're not fluent in yet that they are. Sad to hear the keyboard didnt work out for you cause im a keyboard andy. If you start having very big issues with doing levels consider using some of the accessibility functions celeste comes packed with (there's stuff like more dashes or jumps, or slowing down the game or just buffing stamina or pausing each dash so you can get the direction right). Honestly 8/10 is very good mostly ignoring the dialogue and not going out of the way to fully explore. The core of Celeste is tight and as someone who adores all of celeste's extra spice, its got stuff for pretty much anyone all with in a hard but very accessible game.
@ThroarbinGaming
@ThroarbinGaming 8 месяцев назад
Well I did pay attention to most of the dialogue but I admittedly did skim or skip some parts, lol. And a few people have mentioned my lack of exploration which still has me baffled as I thought I had done a good job doing that. Just shows to go ya how much is in this game.
@Phoenixmage50
@Phoenixmage50 7 месяцев назад
@@ThroarbinGaming People commenting on lack of exploration does kinda make sense when you realize that the vast majority of collectables were skipped, thus a lot of fun interesting rooms were also skipped, at least from what we can tell of there never being a heart collected, only one cassette collected, and self admitted very few strawberries. Celeste has a *lot* in it outside of chapters 1-7, including b sides, and a bunch of other content past that which I dont wanna spoil in case you haven't gotten to it since this video. I'd say you probably played about 1/3 of the game, which is quite crazy given that the main story stopping point for most people is just that third!

Watch trancparencys vid on this game. Even devs argue it's one of the best sum ups on why the game is so great. I too started my 2024 by playing this for the first time. I thought it was just girl climbs mountain the game so i passed it up. Gave it a chance and just wow... it's pretty great in every way but the story is the most special. It's about the human struggle and finding the strength to move forward. It's beautiful. My only slight complaint is my d pad thumb was on fire towards the end. 1000ish deaths will do that to ya lololol.

honestly i’d recommend finding and doing the b sides though you’ll have to have a lot of determination, it’s really a different game that you can choose to play that does have another set ending at the actual final chapter, beating some of those hard levels are some of my fondest memories, i remember that 7b in particular was an achievement for me as it really tests you. up to you of course but for me celeste is never complete at the top of the mountain

Chapter 7 is a good ending, because it was the ending when it was released. Then chapter 8 was released, and finally chapter 9 Farewell. And Farewell is by far the best and most enjoyable part of the game. Not only does the platforming get extremely hard (many many more times difficult than all of the A sides combined), but the story only gets better, but I suppose from your playthrough, you’re the type of person to appreciate the former over the latter. Farewell forces you to get a lot of the collectibles that you missed (including B and/or C sides, which are much harder than their counterparts) so a lot more content (probably 50%) is still left in the game. While I won’t spoil anything, I’ll clarify some terms and mechanics in the game. The sprite is called Madeline, but you can change her name so some players can feel more immersed in the story. The Evil You, is unofficially called Badeline as a result. In chapter 3, the red globs (dust bunnies) on the walls and floors only grow after you move away, and is not based on a timer. So you can stand on them as long as you aren’t moving. In chapter 5, the chasing eyeballs are called Seekers, and the reason that only Theo could break the one at the end is because the temple realized his fears of being an influencer with all eyes on him (the eyes in the background are only facing him). In chapter 6 the blocks (called Kevin after the voice actor lol) actually break the blocks like at 18:20 instead of you stepping on it. The bumpers are called bumpers. In the end, though the terms are official, they’re never mentioned in the game, so call them whatever you want, but just so you know. Do try and finish the rest of the game though, 100% of the achievements is very worth it in my opinion if you have the time to do so. If not, at the very least finish Farewell if only to see what more the game can offer (trust me, it’s a lot more than what’s showcased in the beginning). Golden berries are always a good time killer though lol.

@@dahdumbguy Uhm I don't want this to sound mean but I feel like that's an skill issue. Not only mechanically which can be fixed with practice but also observation. Every room has 2 cycles. One for ID you enter the room the first time and the second one for when you respawn in that room. This means it's actually very consistent and not based on luck at all. Actually there are only like 3 objects that are a bit janky. If you count weird stuff like c pops there might be more to be fair but if you go far enough that's true for every game. That's also a reason for asking you for your PB: I couldn't believe that you knew enough about the game to speedrun it but not know cycles which would be fine if you weren't so adverse. Also the story isn't meant for you to relate. Just because lots of people do doesn't mean you have to. And even without this one usually could appreciate a story of another person. There's also much more to celeste's design (level design too!) that makes it in my eyes superior to other platformers. Generous hitboxes, less momentum based movement, level design with speedrunning in mind, often times multiple solutions to a room, generous amount of time for interaction with objects, pixel style supports fair visualization of hitboxes and allows for setups, ... I've never found an equal amount of good arguments for another platformer. And the stuff I mentioned was only about basic level design and physics. Not to mention the visuals nor the soundtrack nor the story which in combination you could take really far. For reference: Didn't play the game for a while now but sub 45 should be easily possible as well as sub 30 Farewell and I got 297 berries which means only 5b to 8b and 9 golden are missing. 5b and 6b are very much possible but I don't have as much time as I did back then

Yeah, those old Lets Play style videos are quite hard to make work on RU-vid now. I do stream my experience with most games on Kick and Twitch. It's too bad the old lets plays don't typically work.

@@ThroarbinGaming an entire blind stream unedited playthrough is welcome as well, do you have it available anywhere?

@@ThroarbinGaming just to share with you, the reason we like these blind playthroughs is that acting like a mentor giving "tips" and "hints" is really fun and satisfying for us. Of course there are obnoxious ones but it varies between good and bad watchers. For example, Etrian Odyssey blind playthroughs are very rare, and there were a lot of them that are lost forever as the creators didn't archive them. We like to see the struggle, the learning, frustration and enjoyment of the player, its as if we are playing it blind all over again. Apologies for the long rant but I do hope other content creators do the same if possible, as a bonus. Of course, its not necessary.

gameplay, set pieces and tory are about anxiety, and this is eased in nicely and subtitle. puzzle solving is common in platformersnowadays, Likely because ones first game-engine tutoial usually involves setting up a platformer, because that is a good baseline for ANY genre, despite 3d platforming only working in VR due to lack of depth perception otherwise, and fast movement of platformers in VR suffer from motion sickness, so, platformers actually just work in 2d.

Not sure if this helps anyone but for basic controls I use: A - Jump S - Grab D - Dash Arrow keys to move. It takes some getting used to but you eventually get used to it. Other bindings I have are: F - Crouch Dash Shift - 2nd Jump Space - Grab+Jump Ctrl - Down+Dash Hope anyone who comes across this may find it useful.
