In this masterclass, Clive Greensmith and student Fiona Robson work on projection and sound color in Frank Bridges’ Cello Sonata. In this complex work, the cello spends a great deal of time in its middle register, which poses an issue for balancing with the piano. Greensmith works with the student to use her sounding point more to project over the piano and find more resonance in the sound. He also helps her further enhance her sound by releasing tension in her right arm and being more open and expressive with the vibrato in her left hand. In addition to balancing sonically with the piano, the student must also be very rhythmically accurate to remain coordinated. Greensmith encourages her to pay close attention to both the rhythmic and dynamic markings to play exactly what the composer intended. Finally, he works with her to find places to vary the sound color to make her performance as engaging as possible.
What we learn:
- Having a strong sense of rhythm, especially in coordination with the piano.
- Closely following the written expressive markings.
- Finding resonance in the sound and knowing when to play out.
- Being more expressive in the left hand and releasing tension in the bow arm.
- Finding more colors in the sound.
