I just found it again this very night! Some impulse prompted me to search for the song, with a vague hope that this would be available...and it was!! So happy. The Corries recorded a live performance of the song and I love it,but this is my favorite.I believe John Denver covered it as well.
"it wa na weel, the maiden cried; it wa na weel, quo' she indeed/ That the great Silkie from Suleskerry should haigh aoght an' lay a bairn ta me...!"...
Two songs? Do you mean the Gaelic part is a different song than the Scots they sing after that? Forgive the question, I just came across this song for the first time.
I first saw this on the BBC Alba station programme Port. Absolutely mesmerising sublime, pristine pure presentation sung by the wonderful Julie Fowlis ably and perfectly supported by the equally amazing Unthanks. And that piano playing is just out of this world. Folks this is what these wonderful artists do for Scotland and the NE England. They HONOUR their countries and regions. Absolutely perfect.
I was so thrilled to find it again;it had been blocked previously and I was very disappointed.A Scottish duo called The Corries performed it live, and I love that version as well.Haunting.
I remember a time when i was asked to proof that i am adult when i wanted to hear this song ! Since i was unable to do so, i had no access. I am very glad that this song and the wonderful ladies are back.
i loved this song from when i was a young teen but only heard it from the wonderful Joan Baez. It had always been mystical and metaphysical too. I believe there were and maybe all are Silkies of Sule Skerry. This one is just perfectly magnificent! thank you!!!
As always, so very relaxing and beautiful. My heritage is mostly Scottish/Irish. I sing but do not know Gaelic, tried to play the pipes that I love so much. I was awful- no talent lol. One of my sisters however is a brilliant piper.
Hahaha, same here! 50% Celtic, but from Galicia, the Spanish-speaking Romanized Gaels from northwestern Spain, along with Asturias. We are the home of King Milesius of the Leabhar Gabala, whose 3 sons set sail, conquered the Tuatha de Dana and colonised Ireland. Songs are my favourite way to learn Gaeilge. If your piper sister is single, I'm interested! ;-)
Outstanding! Every time I hear this version he's always better than the last time I heard it. Is Miss Palace just singing a chance what do the words actually mean something? Beautiful, everyone!
Julies version calls me home but this version is too much. All you ladies and the gents accompanying you are amazing. Now where's my sword as I feel a need to swing it.
the puirt a beul comes from "òran a ròin," a song the full version of which you can find by julie fowlis ho i, ho i, hi o ho i ho i, ho i, hi o hi ho i, ho i, hi o ho i cha robh mi m aonar a-raoir (i am not alone tonight)
the verse which she sings is as follows as well :) 's mairg san tìr seo, ’s mairg san tìr, ’g ithe dhaoine ’n riochd a bhìdh nach fhaic sibh ceannard an t-sluaigh, goil air teine gu cruaidh cruinn
Nice job everyone 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I like how your channel changes by using different singers and musicians all the time - it's good to have variety. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Julie Fowlis needs to submit a Gaelic-language original song for Ireland's Eurovision selection for next year, it'll be the country's revival in the contest!
@@thegreatselkie6009 oh, ok. My ignorant self thought this was Irish 🙃. Well then, a UK entry wouldn't be bad either, I don't think they've ever done anything celebrating Scottish culture in that regard.
I'm listening learning the language and wearing my families tartan. We've been in the US several generations but that doesn't exclude me from my Scots-Irish blood. I'm so proud of the music and these beautiful singers. 🎶
They are sisters Rachel (dark hair) and Rebecca (spotty dress). Rachel's husband is the piano player. The other girl is related to the 2 sisters. An amazing wonderfully talented family. Oh and Rachel is a wonderful exponent of traditional NE England clog dancing.
Hello, I would like to ask all these singer women and their pianist as well RU-vidr @portcelticsongs an allowance to respect rights : I would like to make someday a cartoon clip about two female selkies and one mermaids who would be singing this traditional song from a sea shore rock. I wish give each one's voice like this. Thank you.
