*PLEASE READ THIS AND THE COMMENT WE PINNED FOR HELPFUL INFORMATION*
This modification is meant for Toyota 4Runner owners that have a model years 1996-1998. These specific models have a different style center console that does not have cup holders like the later years of the 3RD GEN's (99-02). In this video we show you how to remove your center console and replace it with one from a newer year.
**It is very important you get the:
center console
hand brake (e-brake)
tub that e-brake attaches bolts into
bracket that mounts the center console
**Check out this write up on T4R.ORG.

Hi Tim, I know you have friends everywhere, I'm in Tucson Az, and have a friend that owns a 4x4 shop here and he just got a 2000 Tacoma Prerunner, white, and it suffered a soft rollover and has a lot of cherry parts, including locking diff, good motor and auto trans,etc. We also have a 2000 4runner limited 4wd being parted out locally. Thanks so much, Sean (and Tim). I so appreciate the attention to detail you guys provide. I had to go back and re-watch a few sections here and there during the process, but I finally got this sick mod done and drove to work with a beverage in my "new" cupholder this morning! I have a 1998 5-speed SR5 and used a 2000 auto Limited as my donor. I'm always a little nervous when cutting around wires and moving them, but everything seems to be working fine after the "surgery." The donor tub - couldn't quite get it to work. I went back and forth on it, but I finally just put my original tub back in, and it works for the most part. I'm just a little nervous because it isn't positioned well to accommodate the angle of the new e-brake, so the e-brake cable is rubbing against the nut that sticks out of the tub, and the tab that holds the line down rubs against the tub when I pull the e-brake up. I use the brake quite a bit since I have a 5-speed, so I'll just have to check on it every now and then (and maybe someday, I'll brake out the Dremel and perform some surgery). Thanks, again!

Great video guys! Super helpful, thank you! I just finished the mod on my '96 4Runner. My donor console was from a '99 4Runner and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to trim the body, but I did need to. With a dremel it wasn't too bad. I cut off about 1/4 inch from the passenger side of the tub area, put a few coats of paint on, and was good to go. I think any '96 is going to need the body trim.

I did this mod in my 97 SR5 from a 2000 Limted donor both with the passenger seat rear heater. I grabbed the console, E-Brake handle and the E-brake Tub. During the installed I pull my 97 tub out and put in the '00 tub, but the holes didnt line up and would require drilling out holes. For grins I decided to put back my '97 tub and the handle lined up perfectly. Moving the wiring was pretty straight forward too, 2 of them were a little tight, but wasn't to hard to get it all done. Another good vid Tim! I wouldn't have known to be on the look for this while going through the yards for other projects. Took me 5-10 minutes to remove from donor and an hour or so to install in my rig. Salvage Yard in phoenix charged me total $25 for the console and E-brake parts and accessories. TL;DR '00 limited console install to a '97 SR5 use '97 e-brake tub with the '00 handle and console, factory bolt holes will line up perfectly!

@@TimmyTheToolman hell yeah. Every other video and write up i have seen involves cutting and extending the wires. Also, some feedback from my experience. I purchased the e-break base with the mount and the center console. The new e-brake base didn't fit in the hole. I tried my original base and the 99+ E-brake lined up perfectly with the new console. I didn't have to use the 99+ base. It was a big relief as i wasn't willing to do any cutting on the body. Not sure what year the donor truck was as i purchased the parts on ebay.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
It's because the e-brake handle is offset on the models with cupholders and the tub is specific to work with that offset e-brake handle. Does this only apply to automatic transmissions? I have the 98 5MT and it has these two goofy and weak cupholders that pop out of the stereo bezel.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
No, it doesn't only apply to automatic transmission models. This will work for manual transmission models as well. The center console is the same.

Turkeyy Man with the items we got from the donor vehicle, this mod was plug n play. Like we mentioned in the video, our buddy 4runner4leon has to cut some of his body (he has a 97’) but others have reported that they didn’t need to cut anything. Go to the link in the video description to read through a good write that touches on some of these things.

sounds suspiciously like a dead battery
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
It could be a weak battery, bad connection, problem with the charging system or a bad starter. Start by cleaning up your battery posts and terminals and make sure your grounds are clean and tight. If you have a multimeter, check the strength of your battery when the engine is off. A strong battery should show around 12.6 volts. Next, turn on the engine and you should see that the alternator is charging the system efficiently at around 13.7 to 14.7 volts. If you don't have a multimeter, most auto parts stores will check your battery and charging system for free. I know for sure O'Reilly's does it. If you're battery is good and charging system looks fine, and all your connections look good, I'd then pull your starter and replace the plunger and contacts in the solenoid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WV1t5-wcoOI.html If the charging system isn't working properly, it might be worn brushes in your alternator and we have a video for that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-71_kBhg6_-A.html Let me know what you figure out.

WITH Timmy no. Not without some Modification to the coil over setup. Here’s a good conversation about this: www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/238368-confirmed-5th-gen-trdp-rear-suspension-3rd-gen.html

Is it essential that I get a new tub? I have a 98. I can't seem to find any handbrake tubs online.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
Some people have said they needed to replace their tub while others have said they were able to use there existing one. The safest bet is to get the tub also. But, it's not that much labor to get the center console off and the handbrake off to check before you get into the electrical relocating part which is the most time consuming. If your current tub isn't going to work with the offset hand brake, you'll just have to put everything back together and go back to searching for a tub that will work. The easiest way to go for this mod is to grab everything you need from the same donor vehicle.
@anthonyt4981
@anthonyt4981 5 лет назад
@@TimmyTheToolman So I just finished the project and I was able to use the original brake tub. However, I ran into a problem. My brake dash light doesn't turn on when the brake is engaged! I'm not sure if I snagged something, but the button that turns off and on the light on the dash works fine. Any ideas?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
@@anthonyt4981 Maybe the switch that triggers the dash light is broken. Try swapping it out with the one on your original brake handle. Unless you really tugged on the electrical connector to that switch really hard, I'd imagine the wiring is fine.
@anthonyt4981
@anthonyt4981 5 лет назад
@@TimmyTheToolman I tried the original switch as well, and it was working before switching the handbrake to the 99. The weird thing is, the dash light is supposed to be lit when the button is not pressed right? The dash light doesn't turn on whatsoever. It turned on once when I started up the car, then I dropped the brake lever and the light turned off. When I engaged the handbrake, the light did not light back up. I've posted my problem on t4r and reddit, no response. Such an odd problem. Does everything work on your end? Edit: Oh and thanks for replying in such a timely manner.

My first 3rd Gen 4runner purchase was a 2000 and the interior was very clean. My second 3rd Gen purchase was a 98 and the lady I bought it from carted around a long haired dog in it for a lot of years. Even though I cleaned the inside pretty darn good, the interior still smells like musty dog. Sean's rig that was used in this video was obviously owned by people who weren't the cleanest.
