Please note that, as the catcher approaches 3B, the baserunner hesitates to avoid potential collision. That is obstruction and the baserunner should have been awarded home plate.

There is absolutely no way the scorebook can accurately indicate this play. “8 Unassisted” does not do it justice.

Yes. First of all - it’s a hit - probably a double - maybe a triple. So yeah.

A possible way to score this might be: 3B8, 8U. Translation: batter hits a triple to center field, out outstretching at home, centerfielder unassisted.
@dfscott62
@dfscott62 Месяц назад
@@danlambesis1289 Yeah, I think it's a triple. I know the rules explicitly say not to charge an error if the pitcher forgets to cover first, so this seems like just a more extreme version of that play. (edit: typos)

@spelldaddy5386 Месяц назад
It's the same way you can't use proper scorekeeping for most little league games. 99.9% of cases where a fielder makes contact with the ball and fails to field it cleanly, that fielder is charged with an error. In little league, these kids miss pop ups or look at dad while there's a grounder heading their way or whatever, and there are errors all over the place. But you can't in good conscience charge an 8 year old with 10 errors in a game...

Coach was brilliant! “OK, middle infield, you crash on a shallow fly ball but don’t grab the ball. Petey, you leave 3rd and cover 2nd but get there late. Billy, you leave home and cover third, and here the key part, you get there late too. Bobby, great job getting him to pop that pitch up - now you run around in a circle afterward, but make sure you DO NOT get in Luke’s way when he comes in from center field for the tag out at home! OK? Easy out boys, easy out!”

Gotta admit, when I saw the headline "CF Chases batter around bases" I thought I was going to see an outfielder screwing up very badly. Turns out it's one of the great hustle plays of all time. And while I feel bad for this kid's team, I actually love that it happens when his team is losing by 8 in the 6th inning. To be generous to his teammates, they're probably demoralized. I assume the large crowd is because it's a playoff game and they're the home team, which means they're the higher seed. They probably felt pretty good about how this game was going to go, and it appears to have fallen apart pretty badly. Doesn't excuse them suddenly not knowing where to go, but they're high school kids. We can forgive them for not being as locked in as they should be at this moment. But that centerfielder? He's probably thinking of a 9-run inning that the team had and so he's GOT to get the guy at home. Brilliant play.

Not quite sure why the catcher didn’t realize that he wasn’t going to make it to third in time about halfway there and just go back to cover home, but without it we wouldn’t have this great play. Also, it looked like the runner kind of had to avoid the catcher so he should’ve just ran into him and then he probably would’ve awarded home anyways.

As noted in another comment, although this is a small school Ohio tournament game, these 2 schools are in what I believe is the best small public school athletic conference in the country, the Midwest Athletic Conference in western Ohio. There are 11 schools currently in the MAC. There is 1 small private school, but the rest are just small rural communities. But those towns support their kids and schools. The team in the field, Marion Local (which lost this game), just won their 14th state football title overall...most in Ohio history...and all since 2000. If you look closely, the runner slowed at 3b because coach had his right palm facing forward in a tepid "hold" signal. While all of the fielders were attempting at least to rotate to cover bases, the only one who does not is the pitcher. He should have been at the plate when the catcher moved up the line but you can see as the runner rounded third that he kind of moseyed toward third but really didn't actively become part of the defense. I used to catch (rec league only) and I had to tell my pitcher once that you can't be a spectator out there. Fun play to watch though.

*"Center fielder makes the tag at home"* is probably something I'll never see again. At 0:13 and 1:21, you can see the third base coach trying to get the guy to stop at 3rd. Watching everyone other than the center fielder, you can see why Ft. Recovery has 11 runs. Short stop and 2nd baseman can't make a catch and they lose their steam. Third basemen "runs" to 2nd with his glove on his leg. Pitcher is just standing around while catcher leaves home plate empty, making the same mistake 3rd baseman does _while witnessing it._

It looked like both the first and the third baseman were trying to cover second base. When the catcher left the plate, the pitcher had to cover home. Oh well, they got the runner anyway.

How was the catcher not called for obstruction or interference? He hindered the runner as he was rounding third which was why he was tagged out.

It doesn't look like did did obstruct or interfere. The runner slows down for a second, but I think it's because he is expecting to stop at third base. But then he looks to see that the catcher is coming up the line and home plate is uncovered and so he starts again. But he never comes to a complete stop, and so he has to round the base. When he does this, his angle takes him around the catcher.

You are right, pitcher needs to cover second. 3rd baseman and catcher stay at home. As a first baseman, I probably would have trailed the runner, if I saw the pitcher forget to cover. I wouldn’t have expected the 3rd baseman or catcher to leave their bases.

No errors for mental misjudgment. Not covering a base isn't an error. Thinking there is a force when there isn't one isn't an error. There isn't a throw so I don't see how there could be an error. I would say 3b 8u

The catcher was there hoping to make a play but he did not block the base line. The runner had a "clear path" and he was not slowed down!!!

Center fielder is beyond fast! But really, outfielders need more than an "arm". Balls hit into the gap, you need "speed"...guys that can outright run, sprint, limit that hit to ONE LESS base by getting to it QUICKLY! A slow outfielder just give away bases and runs!

It doesn't really count since it was little league, probably about ten years old, our pitcher had an unassisted triple play. Caught the pop up, knew no one would catch any of the relays, so he ran the bases backwards cause the runners didn't know what was going on
