Command_Unit Wasteful? There are multiple major problems that result from the shrinking of the lake. Starting locally, the entire economic base of the population around the lake just disappeared. As If that wasn't bad enough already, the climate also changed from mild, maritime touched climate with fresh breezes to continental desert climate combined with Sand or rather Salt storms. But probably the biggest, even international issue: These Salt storms destroy farmlands hundrets of kilometers away from the lake, Even reaching the Himalaya and melting the glaciers and Snow there! On top of that comes that the "useful" purposes that the Water is used For become more and more impossible as well, as cotton Farmers neglected drainage leading to salt accumulating on the land once again, reducing cotton harvest by about 50%. Every "freak of nature" has its purpose, and by cutting of the Aral everyone just lost in the end.

Yeah, it's bad. But understand the context. The diverted inflow of water was used to irrigate over 5 million hectares of cropland. People in the area needed (and still need) food more than fish. Another thing to remember is that it wasn't the Soviets who did this.
@tonywilson4713
@tonywilson4713 2 года назад
I'm Australian and we have seen a number of documentaries on the destruction for the Aral Sea. I find it truly staggering in this entire video DOES NOT MENTION the destruction of the Aral Sea. Those Soviet era dams built on those 2 huge rivers (Syr Darya and Amu Darya) destroyed the Aral Sea. That destruction is one of the greatest *MANMADE* disasters in history. Prior to its destruction the Aral Sea supported an enormous fishery that fed millions. That is all gone -> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aral_Sea The other thing he does not mention is that those enclaves were deliberately created by Stalin. He did it to create the sorts of situations we now see all across the ex-Soviet Republics. He literally grabbed chunks of populations and swapped them to create these enclaves. These enclaves didn't "naturally" develop over centuries they are a fairly recent (in terms of history) Soviet construct designed to displace people from their traditional homelands.

yes, that was meant as satire, but whatever belief makes him happier about himself i guess. like it or not, the African frontiers are nonsense because of carelessness, all black people being just seen as "African" as if it was an identity in itself. I mean, had we known, would we have made sensible frontiers ? maybe, maybe not. I can't tell. if frontiers had been traced to fuck them up, they would be far more convoluted, deliberately splitting as many people groups as possible leading to torturous jagged lines, like we see here, not 500km long straight lines like the frontiers of mali

@@anarchisticauthoritarian228 Strictly 'Anglo-French' borders. However if one looks at most international borders they are rather artificial, drawn by politicians according to who had just won a war, had the most powerful friends or thought it would be a great idea to create a state of heterogeneous people in order to prevent another state from achieving dominance. The whole notion of the 'nation-state' should have been put out to pasture in 1945 after the devastation of two world wars. Unfortunately tribalism is still a dominant human trait and we love to puff out our chests in pride over things we never did and/or happened well before we were born. 😥
@erniebuchinski3614
@erniebuchinski3614 2 года назад
@@ericjames8233 Yeah, it (tribalism) is what I metaphorically call "the small-d*** complex". And you're right; one shouldn't really mention Britain in such a context with also mentioning France, as they were certainly the biggest players in that arena. As they say, "Not judging - just reporting historical fact." You'll perhaps agree that we could all do with a bit less finger pointing and do a bit more more acknowledging our own shortcomings, both as individuals and as groups. As Woodrow Wilson said, "No nation is fit to sit in judgement of another." That might not be always the case, but I think it's a good general approach, and one which our dumbed-down, polarised world could use benefit from implementing a bit more, certainly.

Absolutely loved that video, I sent this to some family members who work for the US Federal Government, more specifically the Army Corps of Engineers who are dealing with a very similar issue in the states. Fortunately its between states in a federation and not countries with armies and militarized borders lol. But I would love to see your take on the US water crisis, more specifically on how water out in the western states is running out, and the constant battle between state and Federal authorities and farmers. Either way the way resources effect global conflic is super interesting.

They want to only absord convenient, easily-absorbed information that confirms their own worldview and biases. It's why so many older people are incapable of anyone challenging them with something that goes against what they believe: years of not using their brains.
