Nice vid. Those trees will need more space as they're establishing themselves. Also some of my trees (cherry/ Sugar apple for example) were more than double that size within their first year. This may be due to their spacing/ organic home made fertilizer/ species etc., but once your trees start taking off, they're going to need their space. I made that initial mistake years ago with my banana trees. I planted them very close to my Avocado & Mango trees. The banana trees (@ least my variety) grew like weeds & sprouted so many pups. Sometimes it takes a year before they produced too (before I can cut them down). If you have limited space, choose your favorite varieties of fruit & concentrate on those. Also, I grew 3 Sugar Apple plants from from seeds, they're taste wasn't nearly as sweet as my original tree (ended up uprooting all three & using them for mulch). Better to buy an established grafted young tree & not take the risk. Again, good vid & thanks for sharing
Yea, I had so much room to work with. I do think in some cases that some of my cold sensitive trees did better this winter because the other trees help to protect them. Thanks for the advice!
nope, your completely wrong. it really depends on if you want hundreds of lbs of fruit from one tree or just 50lbs. small trees planted really close together do even better than trees planed with more room. i make it a point to keep mine were i can pick fruit without a ladder and prune for conforming. look up high density planting. Japanese have bee doing this forever with the best results.

Very nice! I am also in 9b down in Hudson FL. I am sure you know this already but you can get FREE local woodchips / natural mulch from tree services they will drop off a huge pile, much better for the soil life but if you like the look of the red I understand. Keep up the great work and keep spreading the word!
big problem with mulch in florida is termites mass produce and when chips are gone they eat your tree trunks and roots. i used raw mulch from the dump for years, if your gonna use it do it for 3 to 4 years on your soil before you plant trees, till it under every year. then wait a years with no mulch let the termite die or move. you will have the best soil in the world. the best mulch is from the dump. it has to be more leaves than trunk.

You need a starfruit. (carambola) I had one at my first florida house and it was prolific. Planted one at my second house and it died after being in the ground 3 years. I plan on getting another one. My favorite.
@@tropicalfruitman4394 The figs die back to the ground here even though I wrap and cover them. 15 degrees below zero is kind of tough on a fig. Anyway, I am excited about all the wonderful fruits and veggies I can grow in Florida even in the winter.

From Lutz nice now in Florida that anybody can grow food anywhere in the yard, limited on my space so I starting a garden on the fence, going vertical, Also, have Parkinson's and back problems, the doctor does not want me to bend over do yard work so have it going vertical helps out
You must have a good size property. I'm in Windermere, Florida zone 9b. You're about 90 minutes to the west. My garden is tiny in comparison so my gardening is small patches and pots. But, all good. Garden What You've Got!
I also got infected by the tropical fruit growing virus a couple of months ago 😁 problem is i live in france, so the climate is not adapted for most tropical fruit varieties - my solution - growing them in pots and taking them indoors as soon as it gets chilly oitside. So far i have 4 small mango trees (coconut cream, palmer, nam doc mai #4 and glenn) - i plan to graft several other supposedly delicieus and small growing varieties to them (carrie, ice cream, hawaian dwarf). I then have a passion fruit in a pot and just prdered a banana passion fruit as well as a grenadilla. I furthermore have a small white dragon fruit plant, 3 dwarf cavendish bananas, a kaffir lime tree (leaves are delicious in a curry), 2 finger lime plants, and 2 small papaya plants. Furthermore a small black sapote. I tried to propagate a store bought pineapple crown in a water glass and wait until it grows roots before potting, bit it didnt work. I never tried sugar apple - i only know cherimoyas. Your garden looks just lovely, you did a great job!
Thank you very much. You have a great collection of topical plants also. I hope you get some fruit from them all. I found that using some potash (0-0-61) on your mango trees will increase fruit production. Put some on the ground every two months and mix some with water and spay the tree each month. Also, if you can get an ice cream banana tree aka (blue java), they do very well in the cold. Good luck and keep me posted on your fruit yield.
Oh yea, I love Sugar Apples. One of the most unique and delicious fruits I have ever eaten. I plan to buy an ice cream maker next summer and make some ice cream with them. I can't get enough of them.
Lol I planted my first cherimoya last 2 years only because it was $7.99 a pound, not knowing what it taste like. Now with 2 cherimoya tree (knight and chaffey variety) I'm more familiar with soursop from my childhood back in Nigeria. Just ordered some sugar apple seeds and hopefully should be enjoying and looking for a ice cream maker in the next 3 years. Lol good luck with your yard and harvest, now I know where to get my scion wood in case mine taste like crap.😁 I have 3 pineapple sitting on top of my fridge right now rooting. Ive tried so many times but just havent been successful rooting them. They usually rot from the center leaves. I might just buy it online if I fail again this time or just move to Florida where it grow like weed. Lol
@@Okorokanze2000 Soursop is hard to grow here in Central Florida, not impossible but hard. I've never tried a cherimoya but I know it is from the annona family and like the sugar apple and soursop I bet they taste great. Happy growing.

Thank you! Pineapples are easy to grow. It takes about two years to get fruit and they don't like it when it gets too cold. Best tasting pineapples are the ones you grow at home!
Love the video! I live in Spring Hill and my parents live in Odessa - it’s super helpful to see what can grow around here! Do you know of any markets or stores that sell some of these fruits nearby? I want to plant some exotic fruits on my property, but would like to know what they taste like first
It's hard to find a lot of these fruits but your best bet would be to look of some Chinese and Indian markets. They carry the best selection of rare tropical fruits. You can also order from Miamifruit on-line.
Lovely fruit trees! They look great. What online nursery do you order from? I wouldn’t mind getting one of those finger lime trees. Never heard of it before.
Saw you have some sanseveria (mother in law's tongue) by your passionvine. l'm in The Florida Native Plant Society and it's a class l invasive, bad stuff. You may want to plant some native plants to bring in the pollinators to help your trees.

Hi. I plant sugar apple 2,5 years ago and they did not grow right , last year's I have couple fruit and half way , they were rot, can you tell me how you can grow from seed I try a lot of time but they never come out Why is the trick
It's hard to say what is going on. Prune the tree in early spring and fertilize with an 8-10-10. When it fruits make sure it gets enough water but don't over water. Check for insects and spray the fruit if insects are present. Good luck.
Try calling some of the local nurseries. There is a place on Anderson Rd. near Town N County that carries tropical fruit trees. You can check out Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete also. Happy Growing!
9b St. Cloud, Fl here...Where did you get your bananas from? I have had "Ice cream" bananas for 7 years and have yet to get an edible banana. I want to dig them out and start over with new varieties
I got the ice cream banana trees from a friend. Banana trees need the right conditions to put out a good batch. They like a good amount of water, lots of mulch and warm weather. I've had some put out bananas going into the winter months and I have yet to eat any from those trees.

I can’t seem to grow citrus here in South Florida, all my plants get leaf miners infection. Anyway. Awesome garden. Love your food forest landscaping. Wish more people would convert their yard and lawns to edible food forest, it’s so beautiful to me. Less wasteful toxic lawns, more food.
Sugar apples taste nothing like red or green apples. It is very soft and sweet. Some say it is like a custard. I've never seen sugar apples at any market in Central Florida but you can find them in South Florida. Happy Growing!
Have you thought about growing quince? They are so delicious. They look like apple/pear/lemon cross and they taste like it too. A power house of nutrients.
Quince, like apples, cherries and to a lesser degree peaches, are temperate deciduous trees. This means they need chill hours during the winter and lose all their leaves to go dormant. In the spring they use their stored energy for new growth flower and fruit. Central Florida borders on subtropical. they typically get less than 100 chill hours per winter, making temperate trees unsuitable

We were lucky this time to not take the brunt of it. High winds knocked down three banana trees and I had to re-stake a few other trees. Other than that, no damage to the house. Everyone is safe and all is good! Thanks for asking!
So inspiring and amazing to see florida gardens in such beauty and abundance! Were located in Lakeland, and was wondering if you could give some tips on starting out for a beginner. Did you guys just lay wood chips down, soil + compost on top? Appreciate your help and time!
Actually I started prepping the ground for a totally different purpose. I believe I sprayed the grass to kill it and then put about eight inches of top soil down then mulch on top. It wasn't until almost three years later that I decided to start planting fruit trees. There are some videos on how to prep the ground for a food forest. The guy puts down flat cardboard boxes then covers it with I believe garden soil. Eventually the boxes break down. If I find the link I will post it.

Doesn't Gainesville get pretty cold in the winter? I believe your are in growing zone 9a.. I'm in Zone 9B. you need to pull up a list to see which tropicals you can grow in 9A. I would think yo ucan grow a loquat, mulberry tree, pineapple guava, strawberry guava. These all seem to handle a cold winter here in Central Florida. Also Florida peach trees should do good too. Check on-line tomake sure though so you don's lose any trees from the cold winter weather. Happy Gardening!
@@nancyfahey7518 I didn't do it with a Mango tree but don't see why it wouldn't work. The tree I used the technique on most often was the star tree. It worked perfectly on that one while other sensitive plants suffered. Only problem I see now is all the lights are switching to LED light sources and I'm sure they won't generate enough heat.
@@nancyfahey7518 just keep covering with sheets and blankets if it's going to freeze for multiple hrs. Once it gets big enough it will survive. I have mangos taller than the house. Have to trim them drastically every few years to keep them in check. Typically 3 to 500 mangos per year. Beware though, the squirrels love them. Haha.

I typically but grafted trees for the most part. I grow some fruit from the seeds I get from my fruit. I get most of my plants from the USF Garden show. Other places to get fruit trees are: Citrus Park Landscape Nursey , Jene Topicals, and Keep it Green Nursey. Also A Natural Farm located in Howie of the Hills, Florida. I recently purchased a Strawberry Tree by mail from A Natural Farm. Jene's Tropicals has a wonderful selection (they have much more than is listed on the web-site.

I get my trees from the USF garden show in April and October. Most of my trees are full sun. You can do a search on-line for fruit trees that do well in partial shade.
Brown Turkey, Ischia and Magnolia. One may be a celeste. There is one more that I can't recall at this time. I bought my sugar apple trees from the USF Garden show. I grew the rest from seeds. Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete does sell sugar apple trees.
I get most of my trees from the USF garden show in Tampa. Jene"s Tropicals in St. Pete has a great selection. I also find some in the box stores from time to time.
Sure enough. Used medicinally in other country's. Absolutely fantastic tree to grow down here. Not as much meat, three seeds, but man ate they good. And good for you. 👍
We had a freeze here I think two or three years ago where the temp stayed at freezing for at least two or three days. Most of my pineapples surrvived but I did lose a a few. I have some in the ground iand some in pots. It depends on the location and the closer they are to the house the better.
@@tropicalfruitman4394 that's incredible, you have a beautiful looking food forest. Good selection of plants as well between the annonas and tropical cherry trees. I have hundreds of seedlings in containers if you're interested in planting a rambutan, cherimoya, star fruit, lemon guava, etc I'd love to send you one for free to see it thrive in your care.
I live in Melbourne. Pineapples will survive if they are mature. Babys won't make it. But you can cover them. Water the soil before covering. Don't use plastic. Good luck.

I get just about all of my tropicals from the USF Botanical Gardens plant show each year in April and October. There are a large amount of vendors at the show with a great selection. Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete has a great selection also. Look on-line as there may be some tropical plant shows close to the Orlando are a couple of times during the year. Hope that helps.
