In this episode of Central Hall, senior advocate Kapil Sibal brings together three extraordinary women who are luminaries in their own fields to discuss how women navigate a world inherently unfair to them.
Niraja Gopal Jayal is a political scientist by training, and taught at India's premier graduate university for the social sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has also had stints at the King's College in London and has been associated with the London School of Economics. Her book, 'Citizenship and Its Discontents: An Indian History', was heralded as having broken new ground in scholarship.
Neerja Chowdhury, a journalist with several decades of experience and who now works as a consulting editor with Indian Express has written one of last year's most talked about books, 'How Prime Ministers Decide.'
Malavika Rajkotia, who wrote 'Intimacy Undone: Marriage, Divorce and Family Law in India', is one of the best known family and divorce lawyers in India.
All three speak of background, privilege and the culture of social capital that makes it possible for women to rise and what women who do not have these suffer.

👏💯👏🇮🇳💯👏 It’s the patriarchal behaviour of our society which makes it very difficult for women to rise and genuinely make a mark

Women should be grateful to Dr. BR Ambedkar, who ensured equal rights to them in our Constitution. In the past, Manuwadis and Brahmins had denied any rights such as education and to own property. Today, many women are occupying high positions like the president, chief ministers, governors, judges, ministers, secretaries, scientists, ambassadors, and the army. They are actively involved in media.

😂😂😂 so are you claiming that within the structure of manuvaadi the women themselves were not manuvadi as the upper caste women were not manuvadi. You know very less about society women teach casteism as much as men. manuvadi mindset doesn’t corrupt men only.
@SunilSingh-eo4bl

@JSR-n9iI am all for UCC as well as in regards to shah Bano the overthrowing of court result by congress was absolutely against secularism as well as the separation of power between courts and parliament. However don’t pretend like religion isn’t a highly patriarchal structure be it yours or others. also women don’t get equality in any major religion of the world. It’s only in godless secularist liberal democracies of the west where they have received some kind of equality.

@SunilSingh-eo4bl Prior to the time of Manusimriti and during the time of Buddha, women had equal rights. But Manusimriti imposed stringent restrictions on women and Shudras. They were not allowed to receive education. It was only in 1871 that Jyotibha Phule and Mata Savitribai Phule opened Schools for women. They were humiliated by Brahmins. Mata Savitribai Phule had to carry extra Saree as Brahmins threw dirt on her while going to her Ashram. I cannot write the entire story here, but I know many more things about the atrocities committed by Manuwadis and Brahmins on our Society.

@@inderjeetgiroh1814 as for Mr and mrs Phule are concerned I am a big fan. The problem is that you haven’t read it properly that mrs Phule wasn’t just ostracised by just Brahmin men but by Brahmin women as well. My point remains the same just like 1800s America the benefits of racism was enjoyed by both white men and women both similarly the benefits of casteism is enjoyed by both men and women of upper caste. Also within the other caste also men tend to control their women. Don’t tell me women have more power in avarnas. it’s not the case. There is a nuance to all this.

1. Change starts from education system but there only we are lacking sensitisation. 2. Marriage is not at all necessary to live. Rather there are girls who do not marry seeing the unpredictable life further after marriage if she is not independent.

Single woman women empowerment modern feminism has nothing to do with tradition of marriage Marriage was family & community security for women against Mughal British Aristocrate slavery molestation & conversion After independence Arts music literature culture lost against materialistice lifestyle non interference in personal ambitions & unwillingness as a role of full time housewife ...we demand more rights & liberation & less family responsibilities. ..

Am Indian migrant living in the UK. Yes your comment is spot on. Arranged marriages = forced marriages = Western passport/status. Indian parents ostracise their daughters if they marry White males, do not go to their Weddings as my sons' friends in their 30s have married an Indian from Bradford and other from Scotland. One friend left the UK for Australia with her White husband due to pressure/Control

Look at Tamil Nadu our CM Mr. Stalin and dravidian ideology has helped women of all strata to develop and grow. Thanks to Periyar's teachings. Our ex CM Dr. Karunanidhi did a lot for women empowerment, school kids giving laptops, free bus, now our CM has naan mudhalvan policies to train students and prepare them to be auditor, chartered accountant, engineer, lawyer etc. Salute to Dravidian ideology of periyar, karunanidhi, stalin, ambedkar

One of the major constraint with women/mother working is the travel time. If they can be back from workplace to home in 10 to 20 minutes, more women will get an opportunity to work. Better roads and safe footpaths, cheaper and easily accessible public transport would give women/mothers confidence to go out and work. 5pm to 9 pm is a time in my experience children would need their mothers the most. Children are hungry in the evening, need multiple feeds, they need time to share their stories to the mother which will help them develop their emotional and moral side, time to take kids to dance, music, sports classes etc, if they come back from school with a fever, mother's care is very much required. So ease of transport plays a major role in empowering women and bringing up a healthy future generation

The male club sadly is there everywhere - in India and abroad. It is clearly visible in how the percentage of woman in leadership positions reduce as you go higher. However, that is the case for race as well. When I worked for a multinational company, I found my colleagues in the US and UK (across gender and race) getting promoted far more than those located in India. Bias is there everywhere. We just have to keep trying - it helps best if you do what you love

Actually Development of the people is the development of the country. Government should provide free schools, hospitals and basic needs to rural areas . But government is sevent of the corporates. Thats why government fails to curb on inflation and corruption. For this reason poor people including women can't leader up in their life. But government is just working for Adani Ambani and other businessmen, and also helping loan defaulter businessmen like Vijay malya, Nirav Modi, Mehul choksi and many othersto flee to out of the country. Now tell how can government help the poor and curb on crime, poverty, system ? If the looter had not been helped to flee, the picture of India would have something different.One major thing is that so-called babas like bhole baba, bageshwar baba and many others who are representing themselves like God are also responsible for the innocent people putting uphold back. no action is being taken against them. why don't government ban these meracklous babas. you would have seen the fresh exemple of Hathras stempead happened in which more than 120 people lost their lives. but government doesn't take any action against Bhole baba who was performing his Satsang. and try to defend him.
