About a month ago, I got to do something that I've been wanting to do for so long now: record a siren sounding up close for a tornado warning. Our area was put under a slight risk for severe weather, however, these storms had already produced several tornado warnings in Illinois and Indiana before making their way to Ohio. The storms were also from the same cold front that caused a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma the day before. As the storms were getting closer to my area, I was feeling pretty confident about getting a TOR issued for us, so I headed out to this spot in Dublin where you can see three of their sirens - yes, three. I could hear Plain City's STL-10 and 2001-SRN:DC from about 4.75 miles to the west sounding three separate times, then about a minute after they activate for a fourth time, Franklin County's Whelen's activate. Another minute passes and Dublin finally tones out their sirens, and they wail for three minutes.
The video starts with my 540 PowerShot facing the 2905 at the entrance to Darree Fields Park by the Shier Rings Road & Cosgray Road roundabout, and my 620 PowerShot facing the 2805 only 0.34 miles NNW of the 2905, also at Darree Fields Park. Then about halfway through the cycle, I turn the tripod the 620 is on to face the 2905 right by US 33 at the dead end of Liggett Road. I had some trouble with that however since I was holding an umbrella to keep the cameras from getting too wet and I wanted to keep my arm from getting in the way of the main shot. You can actually hear some of Franklin County's sirens wind down about a minute before Dublin's finish. After Dublin's Whelen's shut off, I drove over to Westerville to see if I could catch the infamous dual tone 4004 off Merlin Drive behind the Kroger by Shrock Road and SR 3. I managed to catch it sounding up close twice before the TOR expired, but I missed the windup both times. The sun came out at the end of the second cycle I caught, which was pretty cool. Anyways, I hope you guys all enjoy this video, and if you ever want to replicate what I did here, please be extremely cautious and stay weather aware, and if you're anywhere remotely close to a tornado, get away from it as soon as possible!
