It's no wonder they only bid £2,000 for that franchise in 1991. All the money was spent on idents. When you look at these and LWT why do we have such crap idents / continuity on ITV thirty years later?
The "hatching egg" sequence at the beginning reminds me of the promos for the original Alien movie. My favorite promo was the rainbow egg and jingle in the mid 80's. That is the one I remember mainly because it came on just before Spitting Image. The cake globe looks really cheesy but that was the state of the art at the time.
@cornerofthemoon: I think its actually meant to represent the eclipse of the sun rather than a hatching egg, lol. It was before The Moomins and Tiswas amongst others that Central did. The Cake one was at the end of Inspector Morse in the 1980's too, "Zenith Production for Central".
0:53 has great quality audio. You can really hear that pounding bass note at the beginning and the "whoosh" :). The main version of the "cake" was the boss IMO all the rest of it is kinda bol*ocks.
My anorak credentials reliably inform me that it was Brian Bennett of The Shadows who was responsible for the main Central 80s theme. :) But if you're talking about one of the other idents here, you could be right!
