The Food Centre was based in Milton Keynes Town Centre and was demolished to make way for the development of new high rise residential buildings. Originally opened in 1988 it has been occupied by Sainsbury’s and Waitrose until those supermarkets relocated approximately eight years ago, leaving much of the building vacant. Armac were appointed in the role of Principal Contractor, producing comprehensive Construction Phase Plans and RAMS following site evaluation by the project management team and the nominated Site Supervisor. A pre-demolition audit was undertaken to evaluate and report to MEPC predicted types and quantities of materials that were suitable for recycling, this KPI was high on their environmental performance agenda as there was some local opposition to the new development. The centre was predominantly steel framed with precast concrete flooring. Service disconnection isolations were managed by others, organised by MEPC. Solid hoarding was in place to secure the site from unauthorised access, this was moved back to the footprint and the footpath re-opened within 6 weeks once a sufficient section of the building had been demolished.
