CENTURION WENDOVER WOODS 50 - I couldn't finish this fantastic race

In the spirit of sharing the lows as well as the highs of my running journey, I have decided to make a short video about how I failed to finish the Wendover Woods 50 mile ultramarathon by Centurion Running.
It was such a fantastic event and I still had a great day, but ultimately my lack of preparation let me down and I failed to get past mile 30!
Thanks for watching!

I am still watching. But I couldn't resist commenting over third way through. You have serious film making skills, Mike, ridiculously beautifully done! I will comment again when I finish watching. (Not sure why but your DNF motivated me into trying ultra like this, just maybe to do 2 laps. The forest is gorgeous!)

Whoever said failure is not an option should be shown the door. Total respect for recognising when you had to stop, and to be able to use this channel to reflect on that will be so valuable for you in the long run (oops, pun intended). Good effort, and well documented 👍🏻😊

Wow! What a great video you put together Mike, this was brilliant to watch. There are always those voices in your head telling you to push on, it’s meant to be hard vs the sensible injury prevention ones, but you still did amazing. You’ll know for next year what to expect and what the training will involve. My biggest tip would be to use poles. They are a lifesaver for tired legs on hilly routes and will prolong the time before your legs feel depleted. Sometimes we need these difficult races to remind us that ultra running is still running a long way, sounds really obvious but when we’ve done a few it’s easy to think they’ll get easier or not require the same efforts as before. I still often get reminded myself. Especially on the marathon distance. I’ve ran tonnes of them but can still get it horribly wrong.
@30somethingmike
@30somethingmike Год назад
Thanks Rachel, yes absolutely I think poles would have helped too 👍 I’ve definitely learnt from this and will improve next year. All the best!

Top video Mike and a pleasure to have another chat with you during this race. You promising to do the Wendover Woods 50 next year to finish it reminds me of one of my own ultra running DNFs that I'm also going to put right. I think that DNFs teach us more than a drama free finish as they force you to look at what happened and what went wrong in detail. Top video as always and I'm sure we will both get to tackle the chips on our shoulders successfully!

Excellent video Mike. So well edited. Looked like a really beautiful course. You may not have finished, but you had the positive outcome of a wonderful day in the woods, doing what you chose to do and enjoying at least some of it. Glad you had the sense to stop after three laps. There were times on two lap marathon courses that I wished I had the sense to stop when I was carrying an injury. There is always next year. Just stumbled across this video and would like to say well done on the 3 laps. I know all too well what you went through and making that decision to quit was still tough but the right call and of course you'll be back to nail it. I don't live too far away from WW and its sort of a training playground for me, but you are so right in saying about familiarity works well in races. God knows how many laps I've done now over the years 😅 I have finished WW50 many times and lap 4 you just swear a lot 😄 and lap 5, well it's just a case of getting the job done. I would also like to say a very well made video and it shows other people what the course is like if they have never done it before. 👍

Hi Mike, hope all going well and you’re training has gone to plan for the Arc. Just to say you make some of the best videos out there and re-watching The North Downs series, I am determined to attempt the 50 one day if I can get past a recurring calf strain. All your videos make excellent reference guides and inspire a target list for future events (the Arc 50 is a bucket list target - it's the dreams that make this such a great sport) If you do make the Arc start line very best of luck and I hope you are able to document the adventure in some format - will very much look forward to it!

It’s the difference between consummatory reward and incentive reward value systems . Satiation is a full stop type thing ,like eating for hunger or having sex for lust . Once done the motivation framework is disabled , satisfaction causes anti climax and low motivation which equals lack of purpose and the underlined need for a human is a sense of meaning and purpose . Runners , real runners enable the the incentive reward system by continue to run . The people I know which run are a good example of the incentive reward system . They reinvent the chase , the hunt the purpose over and over . Run , run further , run faster , run further faster , compete , achieve , achieve better but more importantly and probably the hardest of all I’d say is to get up again post achievements and take on the challenge of continuing to get up and run once they feel they have peaked and start the goal reward system over again . Therefore maintains the purpose . It’s not about being fit or about the running it’s about following a process as a purpose . One which can be easily measured . It’s the ideal regression. And can be applied to any sport or hobby . The gift which keeps on giving . Not the winning , not the finishing but the taking part . Running equals hardship and sacrifice . That is a diorama of life . The video was beautiful too😊

Good effort, I imagine doing loops makes it much harder mentally to continue than doing point to point. On the video side of things there were a few places where it was hard to hear you over the music when watched on a TV. I imagine it is fine with headphones on but might be worth just turning the music down a tad when you're speaking.
