When do the cracks occur? I want to know and fix it! thanks
@АлександрПисецкий-у5ш
During firing, shrinkage occurs. It is necessary to make material already burnt and ground into dust
@RyRy2057
@RyRy2057 4 года назад
old or broken pottery can be ground up and added to clay to help prevent cracks, it's called "grog"! I believe certain types of clay make better grog though, I'm not sure what kind you have. :)
@hibahprice6887
@hibahprice6887 4 года назад
It is necessary to allow the products to dry well before firing, so that there are no additional cracks from moisture.. And yes, add finely chopped pieces of burnt clay,
@lonxv4090
@lonxv4090 4 года назад
maybe you need to let it dry for longer, its at least 3 to 4 weeks
@pavellenivtsev4773
@pavellenivtsev4773 4 года назад
There are many reasons: 1) An invisible air bubble can be "squeezed" into the clay layer. 2) The product may dry unevenly. Or it is not possible to roll out a perfectly smooth layer of clay, and this difference in thickness in one product causes the ceramics to break in the oven. 3) There is excessive tension in the clay. This is when the raw product was transferred from the table to the stand for drying and accidentally bent a little in some place. And the clay remembers the deformation and then along the line of this bend can crack.

Cracks occur when drying and firing and the pottery can explode if there's trapped moisture or air and if it dries to quickly so be sure to get all the trapped air out, and let it get bone dry out in shade before firing. You might also consider making bricks to build a stove or oven for cooking. And the cracked stuff still has a use. Break it down into dust or very small pieces and use it in the next batch of clay.
@Finwolven
@Finwolven 4 года назад
If you put the subtitles on, he air-dried the pottery for a week before firing - it was bone dry. The reason for the crack was likely cooling too fast, or, less likely, a miniature air bubble trapped inside. There was another comment on how the kiln should be stacked as full as possible. But as you point out, grog from grinding up failed bits is going to make next batch much stronger. For the next batch of pottery he also needs to make some kiln helpers, little bits of fired clay that can be used to stack unfired clay items on top of and inside one another, to reduce the likelihood of cracking like the big pot.

Please research ash glaze! You can make a simple ceramic glaze out of ash, a little clay dust, and water! It's been around for over 3000 years. The glaze will make the pottery waterproof and might even seal the cracks that formed in the big pots!

I was watching for a while your videos. But after this one I have subscribed. Well done. Great achievement from 1st try. And now: 1. Inlet for oven preferable from side not top. But if you want to continue doing from top cover as much from top as possible so you have little heat lost. 2. Your oven is big for amount of pottery. Make it smaller or fill inside with more made pots. Insulate between pots with old broken ceramic. Put pots on top each other and put peace of old ceramic and spacer between layers 3. Cover inside of oven with layer of red clay (add some animal hair or at least straw) so you have better insulation 4. Make sure walls of oven with pots are Very thick The idea is to keep oven hot and SLOW cooling down. 5. Check youtube and find a foot operated table to turn clay on table. That will give you constant turn of table and ability to make better and thinner pottery. 6. I like the clay you find. It looks very good but in addition to smashing it in preparation with hands use some heavy peace of smooth wood to smash a clay tighter 7. Adding grog (old ceramic powder) will help with cracks. Thx for video! All the best.
