Ceramics II Glazing the Platters

This video is for my Ceramics II students. It shows the method we will use to glaze our incised slab platters. We use an underglaze applicator to apply an underglaze in the incising after the platter was bisque fired to cone O4, and also a bulb syringe to apply the glaze on the upper areas. Cone 5/6 stoneware glazes were then fired after glazing. In the video, I use Standard 153 stoneware, and Coyote brand glaze.
The red bulb syringes I have purchased from Highwater Clays- but there are many manufacturers of them. I found these to be pretty economical- and I buy replacement tips used to blow up balls, and grind off the tip with the side hole.

Hi Karen, Thank you for your reply. I am taking pottery class at my church given by a retired teacher who does it as volunteer work. The church supports most of the funds and students contribute minimal amount for pottery supplies. It's a group function which allows only so much of individual's choice in glazing color or type of clay. Because I'd like to explore varieties in glazing color, I plan to get my own glazing materials but I have to comply with their firing temperature so that my stuff can be bake together with other student's at the same time. ( they use cone 5, 6). Right now I am in a stage of pulling straight cylinder ( I used your technique, and it worked like charm!!) and in near future, I plan to throw a big bowl or plate using sgraffito technique you had shown. I really appreciate your efforts for uploading all those videos and I am sure there are many people around the world using it as their guidance. You are an amazing artist! Thank you again. Millie

Thanks so much for this, you've explained it really well. I've just bought a kiln and supplies and I am so excited to get back into ceramics after a fifteen year baby-break! This time with no pressure to sell, just to have fun for a few months whilst a learn new skills, and then look to sell in craft shops/etsy etc. I'll look for more of your tutorials as they are so clear and helpful.

@Lynn Woodward- Hi Lynn! One of my goals for this lesson specifically was to teach my students how to use the underglazes and bulb syringes. The reason that we use the underglazes first in the grooves is to wipe off any messy areas prior to using the stoneware glazes. If you use the underglazes after you glaze the platter, and it squishes out into the glaze area, it is much more difficult to remove the messy underglaze. If the underglaze is placed on top of the regular stoneware glaze, in our case, it looks messy and blurred. My goal for the kids is to be able to paint very detailed areas with the red bulb syringe. They find it much easier than using a tiny brush... and they can do it with a much neater application. Many of their designs have quite intricate details which may require the use of the bulb syringe. I hope my explanation makes sense why I teach them that way! :-)

Hi Karen, Why are you not painting on the glaze? Does using the bulb cause a thicker application so you don't have to go over it again? I know when you paint on the glaze you have to apply 3 coats. Thanks so much for this very informative video! Keep them coming.

+Cindy Perry In this lesson, I am teaching the kids how to use the bulb syringe, as many of the kids have small detailed areas that would be very difficult to paint even with a small brush. You are correct- that the bulb puts on the glaze more thickly, so it only requires one coat rather than three coats with a brush. Most of my high school students lack the patience to skillfully paint detailed areas three times with a brush- and the bulb syringe helps to alleviate that problem! We will use this technique of glazing throughout the semester on other projects as needed as well. :-) Thanks for asking!

Hey wouldn't this have been easier to brush the glazes on then add the underglaze to the grooves later? Ouch with the squeeze bulb all day!

try allowing some water to evaporate? Maybe leave the lid off for a bit?? Adding a thicker may just dilute the intensity of the stain.

Karen, I need ur advise. I made a plaster hand of my moms hand and my 3 sisters want a copy made for themselves. My question is... can I make a plaster mold of a plaster item?

Yes- However it is quite complicated to do so of a three dimensional item. It would have to be multiple part- use a separator. The easier option may be a flexible rubber or silicone mold I think. Try doing a search for making flexible molds- I bet that may even have some videos.

What must be done to the plates so they are safe to eat off of, wash, etc.???

With the grooves, I wouldn't use them for something messy- like spaghetti due to difficulty in cleaning... but as long as you have food safe glazes, they would be fine for less messy things, like a sandwich or serving cookies!

Do you put a clear glaze over the black underglaze in the grooves? From this video it looks like you do not. Is that a possibility? I would think if so, it would go on last, after all the color glaze. The reason I ask is it would seem like the clear glaze would 'seal' the underglaze and also work to fill in the groove so that the plate may have a more uniform surface.

I actually don't put clear over the underglaze lines. The surrounding high fire glazes create a vapor glaze seal over the narrow underglaze lines, and the lines appear as clear glazed after glaze firing!

Wondering if you could help on how to refire pieces that have pin holes on them. I've heard spray with hair spray,let dry well and reglaze. I was wondering can I just refire and see if they fill in. Or do I need to sand them and reglaze? If you could that'd be wonderful. Thanks.

Hi Karen, I' d like to know what kind of underglaze you are using and if the firing temperature is compatible with Coyote cone 6 glaze. You are showing a wonderful technique and I'd definitely like to try it.

Hi Millie! I am using Amaco Velvet Underglaze- I think it is either velour black or jet black... (I can't tell a difference)... and YES, it is compatible with the cone 6 coyote... but, I have found only the dark colors will work. So, I have black, brown, green, blue, and a dark purple for the kids to use with the plates. I have found that the light colors and the colors with a pink, red, or orange stains really tend to dissolve with the high firing temperatures. Even though the underglaze isn't directly glazed, the "vapor" glazing of the surrounding glazes can cause those finicky colors to become less opaque. Truly, I have been wanting to order some coyote underglazes to try them out, but still have yet to! They look great on their website! :-) Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Why wouldn't you use a paint brush for the buttercup yellow part?? I don't understand why you used a bulb...

Hello John- I actually tell my kids in class if they have a big area just to brush it three times... since this video was introducing a new tool and technique to them, that's the only reason I used it on a larger part, to reinforce it by seeing the technique again. I find all sorts of things I have to explain to my kids in person once I have shot a video that I wish I had done differently! Lol! Live and learn! :) . Cheers to you- and happy new year!

I don’t recommend that- as if you get underglaze on top of the other glaze it will become smeary. I encourage my kids to do the underglaze first then wipe off excess/mistakes!

The resist for the black lines is a great idea, however not in my classroom, as we don't have applicators which would work for that.

I’ve never heard of that until now! After looking it up, it differs quite a bit with the use of a wax or resist!

KaransPotsAndGlass Cuerda seca, which translates from Spanish to “dry cord,” is an ancient technique for creating line decoration on pottery using a mixture of wax resist and a colorant. It is a great way to add definition to drawings because the wax resist keeps the glaze from covering up the lines.
