In CERT in Action, a fierce storm has struck the local community. CERT members activate in their neighborhood, set up an Incident Command Post, and assess damage throughout the area. They use their CERT skills to respond to damage and injured victims in the local community center, managing the situation until professional responders are able to arrive.

Great video. really helpful to understand the procedures and organization in CERT teams. I live in Ecuador, and right now we are in yellow alert for Cotopaxi Volcano, so as a lawyer I,m working to pass a law to congress for creating CERT teams here, so I,m getting the most info possible to start organizing my community, as we face possible water and mud floods if Cotopaxi erupts violently. So far almost every day there´s ash clouds from the crater.

This is really helpful for "what good looks like" with what they have. I agree radio would have helped but not everyone has those. I appreciate the demonstration of planning and coordination.

+Shelli G Yeah, give'em some tactical training and they can start kicking in doors like what we did in Afghanistan...

+Shelli G I just finished my CERT training yesterday. Your observation about comms is SPOT ON! During our debriefing afterwards, we discussed this in detail. I'm a Ham Operator as is our County Emergency Coordinator. Some federal money has been allocated and our local EOC recently received TWENTY Handheld VHF radios for the teams. Five people in our class have signed up for the Ham License classes we offer several times a year. I have been a Ham since 1990. Another item I plan to raise is First Responder or E.M.R. training. I'm going back to re-certify as an EMR in January 2016. I'm encouraging ALL of our local CERT Teams to get at least ONE EMR on each team.

As Shelli & others have said, radios would have helped as a tool in volunteers’ resources. We saw this video as part of our CERT training two years ago since it gives a good overview of self activation. When we did hour day long hands-on drill to wrap up training the FD specifically had us NOT use radios so we knew the value later on being able to radio info in to ICP. . Earlier this month we did a fire evacuation drill where every team of 2 had an FRS radio. Between check-ins, status reports & being able call in questions, radios earned their spot in the CERT vest hip pocket. This was our 4th year doing the evacuation drill with FD, and 2nd year we used a combo 12 FRS for intra neighborhood & a couple of 2m HTs to call outside neighborhood. Pre radio training was the key so the focus was on the drill, not hoe to use the radios.

I agree with jmtnvalley's comment about the lack of radios & how fortunate the gang is that cell service is working. with radios, Joe wouldn't have to wait :20 to get the info. he could take the info instantaneously. there are FRS (Family Radio Service) not amateur or HAM band radios that don't require licenses that have very good range. in Joe's spot, I'd make sure everyone had access to radios, maintained radio contact, keep safety gear on at all times, stay in your pairs & no unnecessary risks.

NO radio communication! Where are the radios? These folks are lucky that cell service is working. At least FRS radios for current status, instructions and situational awareness. Otherwise, a good introduction.

Hey so and so, why don't you go over there and do this! Hey so and so, why don't you go over there and do that! How about: hey so and so, could you go over there and do this? Hey so and so, could you go over there and do that? Narcissistic-arrogant. I would have been out of there in five seconds. SMH👎

Wow, so glad you're not my neighbor! If you took the CERT training you would know that someone has to be in charge of any situation. If you paid attention to the video you would also notice there is a lot of, "How does that sound to everyone?" solicitation of feedback. If your ego is so fragile that someone using the "wrong" word would make you leave and refuse to help your neighbors, you're the truly narcissistic one.
