I answer your questions about what it's really like being a full-time genetic counselor, and passing the board exam to become certified!
We chat about prenatal genetic counseling, salary and debt, what I found to be unexpected and more :)
This video does discuss abortion/termination, and I give off very pro-choice vibes :))

Hi there! My name is Aman and I’m a chronic oversharer. I live in Toronto and upload a day/week in my life vlogs, what I eat as a vegetarian, midsize fashion (#size12), life as a new genetic counselor/genetic counsellor and grad advice. Growing up I didn’t see a lot of people in the media that looked like me so I finally decided it’s time for me to be that someone! Just your typical brown girl trying to live her best life - subscribe if you want to follow along :)

I am glad to know that this career is more psychological support than science. Where you talk about holding the fetus, that would be a deal breaker for me. I would rather look through the microscope than help people deal with trauma. I am 48 and in the process of choosing a new career. Thanks for your Insight

That part is specific to my role a my center - I don’t know of any other prenatal GC that does that for patients. There are also multiple specialities to choose from, some involve more psychological support (“patient focused) than others!

Hey Aman, being an international student it's really hard and difficult to choose ms program in gc. Yet m trying my part and m now pursuing my undergrad degree . If u don't mind would u pls help me or guide me through it. As u seem to belong from a Sikh family and I'm too attached with a Sikh family like my bf is a Sikh and he supports me a lot through it. I would really like if u please help me through the application process.

Hey girl! I’ve just graduated with an undergrad degree and am now preparing for grad school. I would really love to connect with you just to gain a more personal perspective on GC. I really hope you don’t mind 😆

These videos were very helpful! As someone who is interested in genetic counseling but is very sensitive to blood, how much work with blood do genetic counselors do? Do you administer tests yourself or is that up to another person. Also, did you have to take alot of anatomy classes?
@amanovershares
@amanovershares Год назад
I have never had to handle blood! Usually blood draws are done by people who have special training (genetic counsellors are not automatically trained in phlebotomy). I had to take anatomy and embryology in my masters program :)

i am getting my degree in genetic counseling- am in undergrad right now and struggling so much with chemistry and math. i am very good at concepts and understanding things like that but the math is so difficult for me! am i a lost cause? genuinely asking 😂😂

I didn't do so well in undergrad math either! As long as you can apply those math skills in the context of GC, it should be fine :) Each program is different so there may be some that emphasis statistics/chemistry more than others. Just something to keep in mind when narrowing down where to apply.

Hey Aman,i am 26 now and willing to apply for msc in genetic counseling from 🇺🇸 University so I wanted to ask will my age be a problem or does my age reduces the chances of acceptance from universities like Boston or other prestigious College? as I'm gonna apply through scholarships as I can't afford the full course ❤ from hyderabad
@amanovershares

Age should not a problem in this field! For many people, GC is a 2nd career. A lot of people also have to take time in between undergrad and graduate school to become a more competitive applicant :)
