This video shows a Cervelo bike frame with a bottom bracket that was beyond belief within specification. I guide you through the repair process from start to finish.
The bike used a BBright bottom bracket.

I've worked in industry a long time. When you are accountable for literally hundreds of calculations in a project, there are typically going to be problems along the way. You hope among all hopes to catch them in the 30 or 60 percent design phases. A tolerance issue like this is clearly coming from the production floor and not the prints. I would bet you $1000 dollars that Cervelo only learned of the production problem after many, many frames had been produced, and the resulting fallout of their errors were beginning to come back to haunt them. Then, Cervelo began looking at the numbers, which created some real problems for the accountants. They had a couple of high level meetings and decided to squash any claims by changing the specifications as you mentioned. What they did is actually heresy in the engineering world, but they hoped not to be called out too often. You sir, have taken a stick to the hornet's nest and created chaos in their world. As you stated, making mistakes in engineering, manufacturing, or even in the marketing of a product is painful. But, in order to maintain trust, you must own up and painfully satisfy your obligation to the consumer. Even well-known giant companies like Harley-Davidson, who have denied problems are now reaping what they've sown. They've lost a lot of market share to Polaris, who seemingly can take care of their owners. It's just proof that you're never too big to do the right thing.
@Hambini

that was a lot better worded than I could ever manage. thanks for the comment.

I took up cycling a few years ago and have come to love it as a main hobby of mine. I put up to 200 km on my bike per week now so I'm looking at upgrading from my entry-level commuter to a new gravel bike but I really don't know much about the brands. So I would be subject to falling for marketing and branding and over-pricing. Would you mind sharing which brand(s) you would recommend in this case?

@Riggleboy
@Riggleboy 4 года назад
@@bollmocks , I've always been a fan of Specialized, but I admit they've cut back on entry level bikes and so the prices are a little high (no idea of your budget). Trek is okay too IMO and they do have aluminum and carbon frame sets which give you options. Salsa has a very nice entry level too called the "Journeyman 700C" for under 1k. Not sure your know this, but a majority of frames are made by the same company (Giant) and just sold to brands. Brands like Scott, Trek, and a few others buy their frames from Giant. As far as what you're getting it really is on 2 things, frame type (aluminum verses carbon) and the component quality. The better quality and lighter weight the component the more that price will jump (and fast). Unless you're competing, I see no reason you need a carbon frame as you probably aren't jumping off the bike to jump over obstacles or climbing hills on foot. If you do plan on competing (even at a local level, carbon might be a consideration). The lighter the bike, the better. Also, since I know nothing about you and not sure how serious you've been riding, don't forget shoes and pedals (same concept on compounds/components they are made up of are focused on weight) and even helmet (since you're riding cyclcross and don't want to smack your noggin on a tree). So... the short answer is on what you can afford when you factor in bike, shoes, pedals, helmet, and other gear. Out for fun, stick to aluminum and splurge on carbon if you think you will compete. I'm sure some other folks will have different opinions, but this is just mine. Hope it helps.

This is really helpful information and thanks for being brave enough for calling it what it is. The brutal truth is that most consumers don't have the knowledge or the measurement tools at their disposal to be able to determine when they have a rubbish frame in their hands. The fact that bearing tolerances were increased is pretty evil. The poor bearing manufacturer whose product fails because it's been installed in a setting beyond design limits and "set up for failure" cops the blame instead of the rubbish frame manufacturer!

Funny I dont remimber all these problems with 68mm bsc treaded Bottom Brackets.
@Sills71

Actually this is also a problem with threaded BB (and I prefer threaded BB) . If the bb sides are not aligned there will be friction in the BB. Ironically, this was common when frames were built of steel BB would get warped when welded and the BB would be misaligned. I owned a VERY famous, custom, very high end fliet brazed frame that had this issue. I fixed it with a Mavic BB (the bb did not thread in, it slipped in and then was held in place by threaded rings so the bb shell did not impact the bearings at all)

Owned a 2009 Cervelo S3 with BSA, no such issues either. All the craze and cost cutting with press fits are just tragic. Should just go back to BSA or if a wider shell width is preferred, T47 seems to be the way to go. Thoroughly enjoyed your work as usual Hambini. Love the engineering / technical aspect in your presentation as always.

A good bike builder should check and if necessary face a threaded bottom bracket shell to make sure it's parallel before installing the bottom bracket.
@tychoMX
@tychoMX 4 года назад
Nah, there's lots of threaded BBs with this issue. But any reasonable shop can tap and face it, so at least the bike leaves the shop in customer-ready shape. That fixes most of those problems. Come to think about it, I had a bike that ate threaded english BBs, about one per season (2xSRAM, and even an Enduro X-15 [don't ask, I didn't know any better]) . Seems like there was an axial misalignment, so the spindle went in a bit crooked. A Rotor Self Aligning bottom bracket was the last one I used before that frame was sold, no issues.

@dapster 4 года назад
@@Sills71 Yes, there are problems, but they are so few and far between compared to press fit bottom brackets. BTW, I still have the same threaded BB from 2008. Still going strong, even after well over 100,000 miles.

This is both incredibly educative and entertaining. Love the use of Anglo Saxon! The fact that Cervelo, Tifosi and Cannondale have not had this video removed for trade libel speaks volumes. I have heard from a well known ex pro who used to ride Cervelo that frame quality was very patchy. I have a Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi mod which is now a turbo bike because of the terrible wheel clearance round the chain stays. So I strongly suspect this guy is talking sense.

Hambini, I have been reading forums regarding your work and of course the defenders of Damon ReTard. Your work appears to be solid and big companies do need to be called out on their engineering. I remember back in the 1980's there was a rubber O-ring made by Morton Thiokol that was not functional in cold weather. We lost 7 astronauts because the engineers didn't come clean about the issue. I also lived up the street in Henderson, Nevada when Pepcon blew up while stockpiling oxidizer for Morton Thiokol. Bike bottom brackets and other parts are definitely less dangerous but tolerances are beyond important. Keep up the passionate work.

I did a lot of reading about failed projects inc some of the NASA disasters in project management studies. Tragic that it got to the point of lives lost in the air due to an engineering flaw and an organisation too proud to come clean about it :( Re the bike frame - To me everything's relative. If these guys were making entry level $300 frames then the tolerances might be forgiveable. But companies charging a fortune and marketing 'high end' products should be implementing equally high end quality controls and manufacturing specifications :(

Nice to see someone give an honest approach. Fed up of seeing these “influences “ getting all this cycling related gear & saying its great. When actually it’s 💩. Cervelo seat posts are another 💩 feature . They seem very poor quality. Wonder who Qc that frame on the way out 😂😂😂 £2000 pound plus for a frame that is crap 💩.

Through RU-vid videos i overhaulled my BB & put it back together (big deal for me) with no offical press tool. BUTT the sound that is coming from that press fit is next to unbarable!!!
