SmartReview.com attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2014) to report on the latest camcorders from Sony. The new HDR-CX900 camcorder is Sony's best consumer Full HD camcorder. It shares the same body, features, lens, and sensor with the new FDR-AX100 4K Camcorder. It has a huge 1-inch imaging sensor which is great for low light performance, and depth of field. (The sensor is 6-8 times larger than normal camcorders). The Carl Zeiss lens is top quality, and is 29mm at the wide end. The camcorder can be controlled by WiFi and NFC. It features an XAVC-S high bitrate codec (50mbps), has one manual ring, and one manual dial, neutral density filters, loads of manual features. NFC and WiFi are built-in.

It has been my dream to have a Large Sensor packed into a handycam form factor. I have been following camcorder manufacturers for over 7yrs and Sony finally decided to come out with CX900. And when they finally did... they decided to leave out hallmark Sony features like BOSS (Balanced Optical Image Stabilization) which is a far superior OS than the one they included on this camera. Nor is a flashlight included. The omission of the BOSS feature on a flagship camcorder is a deal-breaker for me! Sony please if you're listening.... please come out with a compact handycam with an APS-C sensor with a focus ring and the BOSS stabilization. I'll buy it in a heart-beat!!

I can't believe they did not put built on flash light as to some previous models (cx700, cx730, etc), that's my thoughts, all other options and capabilities to this cam is to be amazing. Built on reflector, no matter as small it was, shown out as a great help in some situations. Now you got to put this big box of light resource on (HVL-HL1) to film a situation or a scene.

I was thinking about getting the CX900. Can you get uncompressed HDMI out on this camera. I'm thinking about connecting it to a BM Hdmi to Sdi, or even a Ninja. Thanks

The new Sony HDR-CX900 HD Camcorder is Sony's best HD Camcorder for 2014. It has a huge 1-inch imager, great for low light and depth of field shots. This shares the same body as the FDR-AX100 4K Camcorder. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RXY6bywzF2M.html

Could you use this to produce a hunting show for tv?

Hmm. So get this..or the 4K model. I'd probably go with the 4K because of the higher coding. That quality is hard to beat. For the CX900, $1500 is way more reasonable to pay for than the PJ790v. Think I'm gonna go with the 4K, since it has all the other HD formats packed in with 4K. A better value, and 4K is ahead of its time, it'll be worth it when 4K becomes more common and you have 4K you can just jump into. So, there are many advantages to the 4K.

If you go 4K, you would be future proofing your videos. Even if you want to edit to 1080p video, with 4K, you can crop the video and still maintain 1080p full HD. You can even do a simulated 4x zoom while a static video is running in your editing software. Really an exciting time. But the CX900 is an excellent Full HD camcorder. Probably one of the best out there for 2014, given its huge imager, and fact that it uses all the pixels for video according to the Sony Rep on this video. SmartReview also did a video on the FDR-AX100 4K camcorder at: CES 2014 | Sony FDR-AX100 4K Camcorder Review | Ultra HD | Handycam FDR-AX100/B

I'd be curious to know how much more computer editing power you would need. I think 4K will catch on only if the sharpness of the footage/image is better on smaller screens. Will 4K look better than 1080p on a laptop, for example? I think it definitely SHOULD look better, especially in terms of dynamic range.

4K looks fantastic on a 1080p computer monitor and thats only 23-inches. You definitely can tell the difference. With 4K you can also crop the video, or zoom in up to 4X and still maintain full HD quality. Lots of creative things you can do. So its either FDR-AX100 or HDR-CX900. Both are great camcorders with huge imagers. I would personally go 4K. Our other video with some sample footage converted to 1080p (at the end of the video) is here: CES 2014 | Sony FDR-AX100 4K Camcorder Review | Ultra HD | Handycam FDR-AX100/B

Smart Review woah buddy hold up a moment. did you say you can only zoom in 4x @ 4k mode? I thought it was 12x..
@SmartReviewVideos
@SmartReviewVideos 10 лет назад
No, the FDR-AX100, 4K will give you an extra 4x zoom (using edit software) if you wanted to use it (so thats 48x total if you used the full 12x optical zoom). So lets say you took a static video of a band. You could zoom in on a single band member digitally using Adobe premiere, up to 4x and still maintain Full HD because you have 8 megapixels to play with. Full HD is only 2 megapixels. And I believe that unlike zooming with a real lens, you would not lose any F-Stops, as you do with most zoom lenses. You can also crop videos, like you do with pictures, without losing Full HD, if you use the 4K camcorder as a negative for HD 1080p output.

Nothing is said about image stabilization. Rumours say that Sony "forgot" to build in Balanced optical sterady shot. If true, that would prevent me from bying this, otherwise beautiful, camera. What about stabilization on the CX900?
@SmartReviewVideos
@SmartReviewVideos 10 лет назад
Good question. We did ask Sony about this, and one of the reps there said that because the HDR-CX900 and the FDR-AX100 both have a huge 1-inch imager, that the housing for Balanced Optical Steadyshot would have been huge and bulky, so to keep the camcorders a reasonable size, they opted for their next best Optical Steadyshot. It does make sense, given that other camcorders with Balanced Optical have tiny imagers 1/3 or even smaller than the imagers on these cameras.

Sony HDR-CX900 - Focus peaking???
@jesseflintstone3053
@jesseflintstone3053 10 лет назад
He said, "Without any aliasing." Really? Never, ever? Sony actually conquered aliasing? And he also say f/2.8 is "very fast." Since when is f/2.8 "very fast"?
@SmartReviewVideos
@SmartReviewVideos 10 лет назад
I doubt it would be never ever for aliasing, but most of the reason for aliasing is caused by line skipping. Since 2 megapixels only uses less than 10% of this imagers pixels, most CMOS imagers skip lines. He said that the HDR-CX900 uses all the pixels for video, then creates the 1080p from that video. If true, this could solve most aliasing problems, since no line skipping.
