There's a clear decision path to follow when upgrading a GA aircraft to a glass cockpit, here are the top 5 things I learned when upgrading our Cessna 172.
This is the story of the instrument panel upgrade in our '73 Cessna 172M Skyhawk. We bought "Ginger" in 2020. She was, and still is, a wonderfully cared for mostly original airframe. Her engine had been overhauled once, she was nicely repainted and the instruments and avionics in the panel were vintage but fully functional. I flew her this way for 5 months.
I started my project by knowing why I wanted to update the panel, how I was going to use it, set a budget, selected a brand, found a qualified A&P IA and an experienced shop. This video is about planning and details; do your research and understand the pros and cons of doing major work like this, be able to answer questions about what you want and how you plan to use it.
I hope this inspires you to upgrade your panel, feel confident in your choices and I wish you the very best of luck!

Wow, thank you! I appreciate that very much, if you like that you may like a video I’m creating now about the latest panel 2.0 update. It was wonderful flying behind the original but there were a few more details to sort out and now it’s all there. The ‘78 172 has the lower yokes that make glass upgrades soooo much easier, thanks again and welcome to Ginger’s channel!

Question do the airframes have a maximum number of flight hours allowed? I know military aircraft maximum numbers of flight hours before they are retired.
@GingerThePlane
@GingerThePlane 2 года назад
Good question! I'm hardly an expert on this but general aviation aircraft like Ginger never see the stresses a military aircraft sees regularly. My understanding is civil aircraft are able to be flown so long as they remain airworthy. Each year the airplane has an annual inspection to evaluate its fitness and any needed repairs are made. Corrosion takes a lot of aircraft as does accidents, a well maintained airplane can last indefinitely. Ginger is relatively young in airframe hours despite her 48 yrs, we keep her in top form and safety is paramount in everything we do.

Can you lean more/better with more accurate EGT?
@GingerThePlane
@GingerThePlane Месяц назад
Yes, to a point. Ginger has a carbureted engine and that means each cylinder has a slightly different mixture. I lean to 65% power on the ROP (rich of peak) side, keeping my hottest cylinder 20° under its peak temp.

Thanks for the great video. I'm thinking about doing the same, if not very similar, thing on my 182. Hi Tom, at this time Ginger is VFR, I’m planning to add an Avidyne IFD-550 in the future which would then make her IFR. Hi Kyle, it depends on the shop and how they accept payment. In my case I paid for the Dynon system upfront and the labor/extras at the end (2 mos.). We had money saved so were able to pay when billed, other people take avionics loans from aircraft lenders while some free up some equity in their home (or hangar) to finance the upgrades. Its individual to everyone, no one path fits all. Good luck with your upgrade and thanks for watching the video!!

@@GingerThePlane yup, it's just the cost of the original install. Swapping out won't cost any more, but I bet the panel mount cost a lot more than a yoke mount and, frankly, I find the yoke mount a better user interface (although no doubt the panel mount looks really slick). The install looks fantastic though, and the Dynon Skyview is a no brainer. Frankly I don't understand why anyone upgrading a panel would use anything else.
