This video shows what it looks like when you have spark plug fouling in a cessna 172. Always do your engine runup!

It happened to me numerous times on 172S model. Always leaned the mixture at full power for a minute to clear the plugs. No issues. Safe flying

You need to lean the engine if you want are trying to burn off the deposits. When taking off from a high elevation airport you even need to lean for max rpm for taking off.

Do you do this on the runway. Hold breaks apply full throttle. Leaning for that maximum throttle plus a little extra mixture for magic?

This airplane looks like it is in really bad shape also. Good call.

Gotta lean man

This will continue to happen if you follow POH on full rich below 3000msl. I eliminated this problem by idling at 1000rpm after startup until oil temp and pressure rise. Then lean and taxi to run up. At run-up I check lean at 1700rpm. Then mag test. POH wants you to lean only if above 3000msl.

The club I rent from and trained at gas "lean for taxi" on their checklists. These ancient fuel systems on GA airplanes are terrible and need all the manual help they can get. I've got old stuff with carburetors; it's not a princess like a Lycoming.

Running at 2000 RPM without leaning is not enough. You need to lean a maximum to rise the temperature as high as possible and burn the carbob deposit. 2000 RPM, lean,30sec to a minute and then enrich slightly to ground ops and redo a mag check.

I was still a student pilot when this happened to me. After seeing this video again and reviewing with my instructor I now know I should've leaned when running up the RPM. I still don't think I would've taken off even if I would've burned off the carbon deposit and "fixed" the problem.

@@patrickatkinson6164 that was anyway a safe decision! Was it a hot day? Was the engine leaned during your ground taxi? Cheers

@@StefBelgium Actually it was a pretty chilly fall day around 50F. Engine was not leaned during taxi. I never learned about that until AFTER this happened. Now I ground lean everytime.

@@patrickatkinson6164 yup worst is being hot day and not leaning on ground. Fly safe captain! 😉

Oil temperature looks too low or the gauge is broken. This is a very important instrument and you should not run the motor for more then a few minutes - I think - without knowing if it's overheating. If the oil pressure gauge is also out you shouldn't be running the engine at all. Only after you have the oil instrument problems sorted out you can work on getting the engine to run properly.
