Fun IFR/VFR flight in the Chicago area to show/explain the differences between the Cessna 340 and the Cessna 310. My buddy John was feeling bad for my lack of recent flight time and offered to take me flying in his beautiful 340. We were able to show off the pressurization, air conditioning, turbocharging and cabin class differences. As my air traffic control friend mentions...Go DAWGS!!

The 340 is a very nice plane, a friend of mine owns one and uses it to charter mostly business people around California. New year's Eve 2012 he flew myself and my band to San Diego so we could play a gig on a large charter boat! The ride was very smooth and the fact that the cabin is pressurized allowed us to go over a set list in flight without headphones. Kevin, this plane would be a swell mother's day gift for your better half. ;)

When you pick up the 310 from the paint shop, and if you stop in Atl, I suggest you pay the folks at Epps Aviation a visit at PDK, if you haven't already. The Epps family is very rich in GA aviation. Pat's dad was to GA what the Wright bros were to the U.S. He built the first plane in GA while in Athens. Hence the Epps name on the airport. Pat was also responsible for the Lost Squadron being found. Really nice folks, and a good place to stop for fuel.

I sure do miss the sounds of those Continentals... I have about 2000 hours (mostly single pilot IFR) on 310's about 30 years ago and loved every second of it. I did get a bit of 340 and 404/421 time as well and agree the 340 is just that much more versatile. I surprised myself by remembering the v-speeds and the 180 for the the first notch of flaps and 140 for the gear. I've only flown about 5 hours since then (separated by about 15 years each 2.5 hours) but it's like riding a bike. Thanks for the ride... really enjoyed it.

Hi Kevin, LOL, second time watching this video. Love those 340 engines and props making beautiful music on the takeoff roll and climb out. I enjoyed your workmate, Eric saying "N6827L, Climb and maintain 1-2-thousand, go Dawgs", and your compulsory and expected reply, "27L up to 12 thousand, go Dawgs! Was very funny and made me chuckle. And I'm not even an American, but I know who you're talking about. Down my way in south pacific NZL, we say "Go the 'All Blacks'", who are the world's best international rugby team, wearing only a black colored uniform of short sleeved jersey, shorts, studded football boots, mouth-guards, lots of tape around body joints, no body armor, no helmets, no black lines under the eyes, no timeouts, but our national silver fern leaf emblem on the left chest, and their 1 to 15 position numbers on their backs. We play on real grass turf with 1 team, for two 40 minute halves that don't stop active play, and mostly win against the 4 UK countries, Australia, Argentina, France, and South Africa! :)

The 340 has always been one of favorite Cessna twins, second only to the 421C with trailing link landing gear. Back in the late 70’s when I was in the Cessna engineering division at the Wallace plant, some knucklehead came up with the idea of modifying a 340 to what was designated the 335. Essentially it was the same airplane, but was an unpressurized version of the 340 and not turbocharged. When they lost their butts on it, they came up with the 303 Crusader, another unpressurized light twin thinking they could tap the 310 market after production stopped on it. The 303 was a huge failure, too, in part due to the deign of the propeller counter rotating components that had a history of failing and grounding the plane. Nice video Kevin, do you have your sights on a 340 now?
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 4 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it Patrick and thanks for the history lesson! I agree about the 340 and 421C's being some of my favorites....after the 310 of course. :) No 340 for us. Operating cost are a bit high for what we use a plane for. We are spending so much time and effort on 1BC because she is our forever bird. :)

No harness for John. I hope the newbies don't take that as an example.

The engine out power loading of the 310R and 340A are nearly identical (19.3 lb/hp), meaning the engine out climb performance will be similar. This is quite a bit better than most light twins which are around 20-22 lb/hp, and of course they don’t have very beneficial engine out climb capability.

Have you guys seen the Fowler Flap conversion for the 340? There are only a few of them, but they're pretty cool.

Kevin, I know you fly through John C. Tune in West Nashville occasionally. Early Tuesday morning at 1AM, a tornado destroyed it and parts of Nashville and a 65-mile swath East across 6 -7 more Counties. 30 or more people lost their lives in this storm.

Thanks for letting us know Charles. Someone else provided a video link. While the loss of life is the most tragic thing, I hate to see airplanes/airports damaged like that. Many of the planes are no longer being produced and big destruction events usually drive everyones insurance up. Thoughts out to those affected by this sad event. :(

Drone footage of landing!!!!!!!!! WOW!!! Nicely flown as well :-) Ya don't see that everyday... hahaha... The takeoff was a bit herky jerky, but that smooths out with experience ;-) Using 'sport mode', and including a running start would be epic :-)

Overall a fun video. A couple of comm comments - leave out the "with you" whenever checking in and drop the use of "point" when describing your altitude (only used for frequencies). Other than that, great!

Differential power in a cross wind landing is a great technique. But very surprised the 340 did not have an engine monitor. I wouldn’t fly one without an EMS.

Comparing turbines to pistons, a 340 or any other piston is a fraction (purchase price) of any turbine aircraft. Especially the newer singles like TBMs, etc. Yes, they are very reliable with decent efficiency but very expensive to buy. Operating them is probably less than a piston twin unless the turbine goes bad (which is pretty rare - hence the price).
