I agree 100% This is a very excellent video for this bike! He’s literally telling us everything we need to know by simply riding in different conditions! Nothing worse than watching a video of a road ride or those parking lots with cones! That’s not real riding for a bike like this! Excellent content! I’m waiting till next yr to see how the American market responds to ownership after a yr and if it’s good I’m trading my bike in and getting one!

I know exactly where you are riding being a Brissie boy, and to be truthful that is about as gnarly as it gets. I think the 800MT held up its end admirably to be honest, with only a few times blew through the stroke and upset the bike. I would put this a class above the KLR650 in the dirt and light years ahead on the road. I can see clearly the KTM DNA passed down with that sublime 790 motor and box. I truly think CFMoto are on a winner here with this as an off-road tourer and Adventure bike rather than an enduro - which is exactly the market it was aimed at!

Proper review mate👍. I’d be wary about some of the ktm-like electronic issues which might put me off buying one. Fluffy fuelling (if I got that right?) low down and a tall first gear is off putting but not a deal breaker. Great package for their first attempt though and real challenger to KTM, the Husky Nord and BMW. Can see it doing well. Surprisingly weighty for a 790 at 220 kilos. Great off road by the looks of it. Would love to see a comparison with the new Transalp.

I've looked into the CFMoto bikes and ATV's, and what has been shown to me is their company has some good sales presentations, and they offer lots of factory perks. But in reality, their products don't compete with Japanese bikes and don't hold up as well. They look good, I agree with you. But I just am one of those who are leary of anything made in China. For durability, my KLR has been proven a bulletproof design. 35+ years in production, it's undeniable.

What a breath of fresh air you are mate. Loved your review. All important stuff was covered and, as a bonus, we actually get to see an offroad trail as well. Also, low seat position is really helpful to mention, specially for a dude like myself, who's 193cm. I'm not a pro rider, by any standard, but really understood all of your points, good and bad, about this bike. It's a great bike. Curious what you think though, this bike goes for 11000 euro vs bmw f850gs for 13400euro (standard gear, with a similar spec to match 800mt adds up to over 15000 euro)? Question is, does the 850gs, standard option set, provides a better riding experience or not (for a 70% road, 30% offroad rider)?
@onthebackwheel
@onthebackwheel Год назад
Cheers mate. Ultimately the 850 is a bit more capable with more suspension travel. Depends on the riding you are doing too though. If it's light off road and you arent going crazy, probably won't be a lot of difference TBH. Look at the vstrom 800de too. I just bought one and in a similar category

i have experienced the shifter problem you did, mines a 2023 brand new .. i have to be very deliberate in my shifts otherwise it finds a weird spot between 4 and 5 mine does not have a quickshift cancel when i use the clutch, so even if i use the clutch, if i tickle the shifter to downshift the rpm still rises even with the clutch pulled in , there should be a clutch cancel for the quickshifter feature. im coming from sportbikes, currently a panigale v4, im a 50 year old sport biker but my back started to complain so i wanted something a bit more comfortable and it most definitely is that,, its a dream on the road.. i have gone to a 42T rear sprocket . and it still has enough grunt for what it us.. but the smaller rear sprocket exposed the super lean tuning up to 5k rpm or so.. ive done an air filter, cat link pipe and exhaust, nothing loud at all though i use the db killer as well. i feel these bikes should be a bit on quiet side especially with the places we llike to explore, partks etc etc, where quiet is appreciated..a loud exhaust i annoying as hell .. after a remap the torque down low is back and the extra 3 or so hp have made it feel about like it did with the 45t rear sprocket.. (and i get better gas mileage, dropped about 375-400 rpm off the 75mph cruise)and has tamed the super sensitive throttle down low... my only real complaint was the super snatchy throttle.. it is now more managle and smoother down low..i also made a new throttle return spring with thicker wire to add more tension to the throttle, i felt it was too easy to turn. the smaller rear sprocket made 1st gear more useable but 2nd is the most versatile while trekking offroad as you said. i really appreciate this bikes ability to carve the curves, up to the point where it drags centerstand, thats the limit, i have to say it looks impressive at full lean sitting upright in the seat LOLOL .. its enough to more than hang with the experienced sport bikers in the curves and pull away from the timid ones , they hate that LOL... of course when the road straightens out they wave goodbye. the abs works well in the straight and in the lean ive found... but i installed a rear abs shutoff for offroad.. i wish it would have come with a fully adjustable rear shock but we dont pay enough for such things on this bike. if my offroading progresses to that point i will upgrade the shock and respring the whole thing but at 190 pounds and the springs are close for me not right but close .. the suspension travel is not great. but its sufficient for what i will be doing..the mcu error has been fixed . i have gone to galfer HH compound pads and the brakes are waaayyyyy better, im really loving this bike , i cant wait to get it done and take my first trip if the quickshifter craps the bed i will just remove it, i prefer as analog as possible, nice thrashing sir, gives me a good idea of what it can take, happy riding

@onthebackwheel also id like to mention that when im coasting at idle in ...say 2nd and i inadvertantly touch the shifter but not enough to actually downshift it lurches forward but still in second when it blips the throttle thinking i wanted a downshift..its super sketchy if your not paying attention...when riding at higher speeds and downshifting its not a real problem..but it reslly needs work..compared to my v4s qs this is downright sketchy..and i dont see them fixing it..i will likely remove it and m a ke it analog clutch..

Hi ! Did it in rain or sport mode ? My first offroad track on the Mt800 I did it in rain and was al little better than sport (to torky) The only a bad thing for me is that my tires are road so...A little bit harder 😖 And yes, absolutely agreed with the fuelling issue. After the firmware upgrade it is a little bit better but still bad The gearbox is that from KTM, same issue on the Adv 790/890 Yes, the quickshifter sometimes in harsh conditions get stuck and you have to "restart" the bike (I only use it on street or highway, on offroad you have to change gears manually)
@onthebackwheel
@onthebackwheel Год назад
I tried both and just kept it in sport. A tyre change is definitely needed for any decent off-road riding!

Hi Curtis That was a great review - you are obviously an experienced dirt bike rider. I have ridden on road for last 20 years (currently 2007 BMW K1200gt) - and I am just south of 60yo - all the other guys have now gone to the big adventure bikes and want to ride some dirt roads and good trails - not the hard stuff you did! At 5ft 8in the big adventure bikes are just too tall for me. My K1200gt is a great tourer but not good the dirt I sometimes think the bigger bikes have a lot more power that is mostly unusable but then they do have comfort I had a Ninja 1000sx a few years back - more performance than I needed - but it was a bit tiresome for long touring. Next year I was hoping to do a solo lap of Oz - do you think the new 800 MT Explorer would be enough bike (mostly bitumen and some dirt)? Once again - great review. .
@onthebackwheel

Hi! Love your videos. I know this video was made a year ago but i just bought a 2023 Ibex 800 MT and i would like to ride it just like you did off road. I also know a KTM 890 Adventure R would have been better but the Ibex was the bike i wanted loll. I ride mostly 70% road and 30% off road (this is why the Ibex came to my mind) but when i am off road, i like fire roads and BDR's, rocky hill climbs and washouts, etc... I'm 6'ft and 230 lbs. With your experience with the Ibex, what would be the best suspension settings front and rear for this kind of off road you did? Would a different front spring rate is necessary? Again, i know this is not the right bike for this but like you said, it did good despite the fact that she was not in her element. Thank you
