CFA vs MBA

The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) program is the gold standard for investing and financial analysis. You'll learn how to calculate prices for stocks, bonds, derivatives, and more. You’ll also learn financial accounting, portfolio management, economics, and ethics.
The most common career paths for CFA Charterholders include portfolio management, equity research, wealth management, financial advising, investment banking, corporate finance, and certain types of consulting.
There is a very wide range for salaries for CFA Charterholders. Portfolio Managers can make over $300,000 per year in total compensation, while Payscale.com says the median base salary for all Charterholders is about $92,000. Early career Charterholders will likely make less than this, so don't be afraid to advocate for yourself for a raise or a promotion, or to look at jobs at other companies to increase your salary.
The CFA Program can cost about $5,000 to complete, depending on how often you have to retake the tests and what study materials you use. Also the Institute requires annual dues after getting the charter of about $300.
The CFA Program is extremely difficult and time consuming, averaging 300 hours of study time per level, with roughly a 50% pass rate per level.
The CFA program does lack resources for actually helping people find jobs. Your best bet will be to go to networking events hosted by your local CFA Society.
The CFA is an impressive credential that proves you understand finance and investing, and that you have the grit and determination to complete a rigorous self-study program.
MBA:
An MBA (Masters in Business Administration) provides a broad business education. The top 10 or top 20 programs will have the best brand recognition, strongest alumni networks, and resources to hire the best professors and career services employees. The MBA is a great way to change careers or break into a new industry.
The most common careers coming out of a top program include management consulting, investment banking, corporate roles in finance, marketing, and general management, as well as asset management, private equity, and joining a start up, or starting your own company.
The average salary coming out of a top MBA program is roughly $140,000 - $150,000. Consulting and Investment banking will generally pay more than this, while corporate roles will pay less.
Costs: Tuition at top schools cost upwards of $150,000 as of 2021, plus you are giving up 2 years of income if you go full time.
Classes at top MBA programs are very interesting and useful, but in my opinion are not nearly as difficult as the CFA Program. The hardest parts are getting accepted to the top schools in the first place, and landing that job or internship. Prepare to do a lot of networking and interview preparation, which includes case interviews and stock pitches depending on your chosen career path.
Many people do choose to do both, especially if they work in investments.

Sat for Level 1 yesterday. Although I am reasonably confident I passed, the exam was tough. Much more difficult than my mock exams. Can’t imagine what Level 2 will be like. Really makes you respect for those that have earned the charter.

@@jaker5230 you need to change your perspective on studying. I passed @ the 90th percentile on my first attempt. You may not be putting enough effort in or your study process is fundamentally flawed if you have failed it 3 times. I used Mark Meldrum's program, I highky recommend using him

Mba is good and valuable highly if u do it from top business school or university. Cfa only increases the chance of getting a good job in finacial sector and increases your knowledge about finance in depth. But Cfa doesn't guarantee that you will be able just to walk into any company and get the job. Cfa is more of a personal achievement and good recognition from employers. I have seen lot of people don't have cfa and mba but doing good jobs and earning high based on networking, references and connections and oiling people. The more oiling you can do the more higher you will climb thats the world we are living nowadays.

I completely agree. Credentials like top MBA programs and the CFA Charter give your resume a boost, but at the end of the day networking and interview skills are key for actually getting the job.

Completely agree. Just because a person complete a CFA or an MBA, doesn't mean he or she will be a CFO or a company manager fresh out of school. Experience speaks volume, more so than degree or certificates. Connection and Network also helped a lot.

Thank you for the content . I just finished my bachelor in economics , right now I am doing my internship to pwc. I am interested in investment banking , so in your opinion CFA+FRM or MBA in HECparis university ? Which is better for the future ? Thank you
@JoeMaule

Thank you for the comment. From what I have seen, networking is the most effective way to get into investment banking, so I would focus on that first. There are articles online that explain best practices for networking into investment banking. If you aren't able to get in after 2-3 years, then I would consider the MBA, and try to land an IB internship through that program. In the meantime, you could start the CFA program, or simply take a financial modeling course so you understand DCFs and LBOs for investment banking interviews. I think you are asking the right questions and should keep getting opinions from people who work in the industry as you decide.
@user-bt1kv5in4n

Thank you for this . This is exactly what I was thinking . Networking is the key , in the meanwhile CFA + FRM give tremendous knowledge and credibility . MBA will come later . Thank you for the content.
@upstateNYfinest
@upstateNYfinest Год назад
@@user-bt1kv5in4n idk if the FRM will be all that important for an IB role. The CFA will help more than the FRM, but goin to a T25 MBA program is gonna give u the best shot of making it in by far
