I too got hammered on grades this week. There were 8 books in my 24 book sub that I expected no less than 9.6 on and they all got wrecked. I mean to the point that it felt intentional. Anxious to get them back Monday and hoping they weren't inexplicably "damaged."
I feel your pain! We must have had the same grader. A few hours ago, I checked the grades on a few books I submitted. I really thought my ASM 301 had a shot at 9.8. Got a 9.2! Two other books got a 9.6 and 9.2. Sent in my second, inferior, copy of Hulk 340. I was hoping for a 9.6. Got a 9.8! Submission made no sense (my better copy was submitted a while ago and got a 9.4).
And I really don’t know if they’re going by different protocols these days or what but I have seen a lot of variability in the modern grading WTF but the economy and standard seems to be pretty solid still. NO MORE SLAM DUNKS 😂
CGC grading was harsh like this when they first opened, then adjusted to more reasonable standards. --Maybe due to new hires back then and moreover recently?? -- The skeptic in me says that they just want more CPR business!!
Grading is totally at the discretion of the graders; which you know that. It is crazy though how some things get a pass and others don't. Glad CGC has a book out now but wish it was way more transparent. IMO anything below a 10 should have graders notes because something had to be noticed for it to not be a 10. I think we would see a little more of the 9.9 and 10 books instead of 9.8 being the standard for perfection it has become. Don't get me wrong I don't want them handing out 9.8's to anything. However, when you have invisible comics and books with added staples getting 9.9 and 10's something isn't right. Awesome books man!!! Honestly some awesome grades to go with them too!!
agreed, the graders notes should be included in just about every submission! The grading fees justify adding graders notes in my opinion, especially with the recent price hikes.
Man, that does seem harsh on these books. I’m curious what your silver age books come back with…I have a nice collection of SA books but I’m hesitant to send in to CGC because of the horror stories I’ve heard from other RU-vidrs like yourself. Btw what grade is your Crow 1? I have a CGC 9.0 and signed by OBarr, the creator!
I always get a little nervous sending my books in for grading, but to be honest, it is more success than issues with CGC and I do continue to use them for my comic grading needs. And The Crow 1 is a 9.4 white pages copy, bought it raw and had it pressed and cleaned by my friends over at Spineworks in Sarasota.
A little update; I just received the shipping notification on my Iron Man #1 (1968) that I pressed and cleaned myself, and it was graded a CGC 7.5 w White Pages 🙂🙂🙂 excellent grade and so happy w the results! I have 8 other silver age books coming back next week that I’ll drop a video on, so keep your eyes peeled for that video!
