Ch. 1 - I Bought an OFF-GRID Cabin in Sweden

After searching for a cabin for 3-4 years I finally found the right one. With no running water, electricity or septic system. There's a well on the property but not sure what the state of the water is. There used to be electricity but one owner cut the cable in the 80's. My plan is to renovate it, sticking to the old style but making it more modern and slightly more comfortable. I have no previous experience in renovations and I have no deadline, I kinda go with the flow in terms of what I do and when I finish it.

It’s such a special place. The house being left as it was when they left, with all the furniture, tools, dishes and other things, their parent’s life in the cabin is continuing through you, a complete stranger. You’re picking up where they left off. Very special.

I love how i get time to look at every detail in the picture before it cuts to another scene! The sparingly used calm music is really good, too. One, I'm surprised at how clean the place is. Two, did the family die out? I can't imagine that no descendant wanted the wedding photos! Three, I love the red! I've seen several of these "reno a cabin in the woods of Sweden" videos and no one else went back with red paint. It made me sad.

suggestion when it comes to clearing the garden, pull unwanted plants and shrubs out of the soil completely, including the roots, to prevent them from growing back

Such a nice cabin .. though it's not just a "cabin" .. it's a proper two-story building full of history and hidden gems. You're a lucky guy to find this place - the house still in a relatively good condition and I assume there are no neighbors nearby .. privacy is something which no money can buy, and there seems to be plenty of it. I wish you good luck with the property .. there will be enough work for your lifetime :))) ✌

The inside looks just like the house my grandpa grew up in. Sadly the house doesn't exist anymore cause we had to tear ut down.

Exciting to follow a first time renovation, and right from the beginning! :) Lovely stuga in lovely location. Really beautiful views. Whereabouts in Sweden is it? How big is the land? (With three chainsaws there's the hint that you have some forest to harvest for firewood?) I'm surprised there isn't any 'lockläkt over the panel on the house, but even though the state of white paint shows how long the house has been since it was last painted, and it really needs it, the wood still looked to be in really good condition. And the wood timbers of the barn also seemed to be unreasonably good condition if you guess that they are probably at least 100 years old or something?

Thanks! It's in a town called Österfärnebo. The land is not that much bigger than the garden. I have a few trees around the property but not that many. My guess is that the cabin is from around 1850-1880 so the barn would probably be from around that time too

What's the deal with the new trend calling regular family sized Swedish houses cabins. Everyone renovating a Swedish building on RU-vid seems to be buying a "Swedish cabin" now. It's a house! 😉😏 Anyways, nice find. I took a similar chance in 2004. And moved into a 1850's farm house in the woods that hadn't been inhabited since 1973. Best way to live! And much more healthy and comfortable than many seem to think. That life is gone now (divorce) but maybe I'll do it by myself again some day. 👍🏻

Can you explain why there are so many red with white trim houses in Sweden? Is it regional, for one type of home, or what. Thanks have always wondered. Yours is a gem. The second coat will glide on faster and you will hear the difference. Then a better sealed house.
