Of all the plucked string instruments, the tiorba (theorbo) is , by far, my favorite. The sound is richly sonorous and resonant - unmatched by any other instrument.
I weep at the beauty of the sound to bask in the charm... What a luscious discovery for me.. today The Baroque Theorbo Thank you for placing this on youtube. Thank you for teaching me ... today
My favorite thing about the piece is how shocking the sudden modulation to the minor key in the middle section is. It always fills me with a jolt of deep melancholy.
I've loved and played de Visee's music since I was a beginning 13-yer-old guitar player (I'm now 70 years old). I've never before heard this work. He is absolutely under- and unappreciated. This is extraordinary music.
To Francisco's incredible interpretation of Robert de Visée's exquisite chaconne here, I see Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, forgetting his scamp within, both dancing a waltz together, dressed in white, alone, under almond trees in full, white and pink bloom. ... There, on the island of Malta, with stars beginning to appear above them, in a dark blue, early evening sky! - And indeed, while countless people from all around the world are casting their eyes towards a much loved, grieving, bereft Queen, with her family and friends, we all come to one conclusion. - Whoever we are, and wherever we are. - So we shall surely get to know,, if we don't know it already; the ending of The Dance, with someone we love, is the saddest step of all!
DeVisee is wonderful, something about his music sounds so modern to me. Wonderful job. And theorbo is such a rich sounding instrument. It has the extra basses like the lute but is single strung like the guitar.
At first I was so fascinated by the player and the instrument that I forgot to listen for the chaconne, discovered it on the second listen, and now the third time around just enjoying the lovely music.
10th April 2021, after a Friday of sorrow in the United Kingdom. - Francisco seems to hold the key to a very particular Lady's pain there, in the six minutes of this amazing music: This is a perfect tribute to everyone in the British Islands at this time, and to everyone who loves what they represent. ... in particular, it seems to be an exquisite tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who now represents everyone who has lost a Love in their life.
Nigel North, in his 1987 paper "Continuo playing on the lute, archlute and theorbo" remarks how theorbo was seen as a sort of an "easier" alternative to the lute because its beautiful sound might mask imperfections in the music itself, or the singing. I can see the point, to me along with the cornett it has the most beautiful sound of any instrument.
