@@Masterfighterx So what was it about the whole "lay down a track for the musician/band" that you didn't understand? How many credits do you have? During his time Jeff Porcaro was one of the most recorded drummers. He didn't focus on lofty drum fills doing all that work, it was getting the beat, being in the pocket, and sounding cool. Meaning, it's all about the riffs and not stepping on the other instruments. That sound Chad got might be reproducible with what he did on the hi-hat, it's probably really hard to get those opening and closing sounds to match a real drummer, but what he provided other than his unique take on the way the beat should feel like was an artist that didn't have to worry about the whole aspect of paying people to program a drum track and these are people that don't have the feel of creating thousands of beats for many types of music.

also, he keeps it minimal, so that the singer can emerge and his work is to enhance hers. It is kind of a informal rule for drummers, and it's quite easier when it's not a song you are very attached to, but seeing it done by a legend is still something memorable.

@mariarusso8591 yeah but the back story of it makes it even better heres a legend who happens to be there and asked to play on top of a already done song for the album of a somewhat still new artist but he doesn't just throw it down and forgets about it like a lot would he enjoys it here like hes remembering getting the call they hired him to play for her hes super excited about a song he just dropped a beat on for a better sound not something that he's traveling the world playing to me thats just something you don't anymore its about the music still and not the paycheck and girls its refreshing to see that. Well, you know they also get points on the song. Regular studio musicians will have a day rate but when Chad Smith shows up, be ready to give him a couple percent of the royalties. He’ll show up for whatever the hell you want song got 1 billion views. He’s probably made around $50,000 if he’s negotiated one percent of 1 billion played song based on Spotify’s current payout. that’s way better than $1000 per day for high session musician.

Same! I'm not a pop fan usually, but her Tiny Desk performance sold me. She's just got a great energy to her and you can tell she loves what she's doing to the point where you can't help but get into it, too. Also her bass player KILLED IT in that set - check it out if you haven't.

This gave me a total new appreciation for Chad Smith as a drummer. Man, this performance was so tight. His pocket is spot on. It was like watching the ones with MJ's drummer. No frills, just groove. A lot of people underestimate how hard that is to do right.

I love his entrance on the back half of the first chorus. He's so on top of the beat-for a second I'm like "shit, is he rushing?", and then no, his pocket is absolutely solid, he's just using his incredible control of time to bring some energy to that section. Amazing!

As a keyboard player a good drummer is always a mystery - to groove and yet be locked in - it's a dark art. On keys you can get away with the odd out of time note but one hihat or kick out of time and anyone can hear it. Props to Chad who can lock in, groove out, ghost note, instant fill with 32nd's, WHILST giving a cheeky grin to the audience.
