Eddie was a genius. He didn't let the instrument limit him. If the guitar didn't do what he wanted, he would invent and suggest changes like he did with the Fender. He was like Mozart in his time.

I have never thought I would ever hear someone; anyone play an electric guitar and make it sound like a violin or cello! Master class guitarist!

The most common thing reactors say when he goes into the "blue light special" section with the swells(cello sound) is HOW?!?!?! If you actually watch, you can see how, but even seeing how he does it, doesn't do it justice to how difficult it is to do well.

I'm a 61 year old guitarist. In 1978 my older and his wife took me to a Black Sabbath concert in Spokane WA. We had never heard of the opening band, it was some band from California called Van Halen. I was 16 years old, had been playing for only a few years, I was hearing Eddie Van Halen for the first time, and it was live. Here I am 45 years later, I'm still a guitarist, and I still get excited when I hear Van Halen. I just found y'all's channel, I love it!

Eddie was a generational guitarist in the fact that when VH first album came out he literally changed the way guitarist approached the guitar. He didn’t invent the double finger tapping style, but he certainly brought it to the forefront and introduced it to the masses. Obviously he was a game changer

Fun Fact about Eddie: Eddie never learned to read the sheet music, he later explained. Instead, he would mimic the instructor's hand movements and play by ear to realize works by Beethoven and Mozart. During recitals and competitions, he would use memory recall and improvise, earning praise from judges for his stylizations.

Eruption? Volcanic! Eddie made his own guitars by using parts from various name brands, always with an ear towards how those parts could make the sounds he wanted to play. With that much heart & dedication to his Craft, I wouldn't be surprised if the spirit of Eddie's guitars went with him to Heaven because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them. Back in the day, when the group was still performing in the early stages, Eddie couldn't afford the more advanced gear like the foot pedal modulators & such. So he figured out how to wring every possible sound he could find out of his guitar manually...That gave him *technique* that he could turn into reflex, just like any Master would achieve in their field. In fact you may even have noticed that Eddie wasn't using any foot pedal modulators, auto-tuners or other devices during the filming of this solo...It was all just him & his guitar.

Eddie was just incredible! One of the best guitarists ever. Fun fact about his tapping technique: Although he came up with the name of 'tapping', he wasn't actually the first guitarist to bring it to the rock scene. 😊 This tapping technique was introduced to the rock scene in 1971 by Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, specifically on the songs The Musical Box and The Return Of The Giant Hogweed. Eddie went to see Steve perform at one of his solo shows and was inspired to develop it for his own playing. 🙂 Steve's playing has influenced many different guitarists over the years, not just Eddie, but also Brian May and Nuno Bettencourt among others. Definitely have a listen to Steve's solo song Shadow Of The Hierophant, from his 1975 debut solo album Voyage Of The Acolyte, where you will find him tapping. 😊

We got a new Van Halen album every year 1978-1982, from grades 8 thru 12. My best friend and I grew up in the late 70’s, 80’s playing in bands throughout the 80’s, Brent on guitar and me on drums. Hugely influenced by VH. We were so brotherly close that we stopped using our given names. I called him Ed and he called me Al. We are both now 60 years old and we still refer to each other by those names. No musicians are closer than the brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen.

I don’t know how this solo came to be known as “Eruption”. He played different parts mixed in of the song (mini song, I guess) “Eruption” in this. Anyway, it’s Ed’s solo from a concert called “Live Without a Net”. It’s an awesome concert. Check it out. It’s posted a few times here. If you like drums, check out his brother’s drum solo from this same concert. Somebody usually timestamps the songs/solos in the comments. The drum solo is just about as incredible as this when it comes to that instrument.

Jimi was the first guitarist to liberate the guitar from being a strummable, essentially backing instrument. Sure, blues guitarists and jazz guitarists took soloing to another level, but Jimi discovered that a whole universe of sounds was possible from the electric guitar, (plus massive overdrive and amplification!). When Jimi died Eddie Van Halen continued his legacy to take the guitar to heaven (and Hell) and beyond.

I got to see them 5 times , 3 with David , 2 with Sammy . Was at the concert in 84 when they got their first No. 1 , I was lucky living in Rome , Ga. close to Atlanta ,Ga.. Between the Omni and the Fox Theater there was at least 1 concert a month to go to ! With tickets costing $ 15 , the tickets were usually cheaper than a t-shirt . So many great bands to see and my favorite place to go was the Fox Theater , not a bad seat in the place and the acoustics were the best !! Also the inside was beautiful . Usually the upstarting bands would play the Fox and the seasoned band would be at the Omni ,, which could seat larger crowds . What a great time for music !!!

Agree with Chad. I was mesmerized by him, and the band with DLR, from the very beginning. I absolutely loved Sammy before he joined VH, but it just wasn't the same obviously. He did bring a lot of positive influence to the band, and I definitely love many of their later releases. But that initial combination of musicality and lyracism between the original group was... well, it completely captured my young teens. Every emotion, every thought, everything - VH managed to reflect it right back to me. I will forever consider VH to be my first "favorite band" in terms of hitting me straight through the mind and heart. I'd never experienced anything like them before. Eddie's death hit me hard, no doubt about it. Not the first of my youth idols to pass on, but the most impactful. The world is a lessor place without him, to be sure.

The best part... that's a 4 minute song on the "Long Version", most of this was improvised on the spot. Watch other live shows with the song, and it's different. It's different on the album version as well. This is just Eddie jamming, "Eruption" was in there but he improvised a ton every time he played it. Also, he was a multi-instrumentalist. He's best known for guitar, but that's him on the Piano in the track "Right Now", which while admittedly isn't hard to play, it's a masterful composition. Playing is one thing, but actually writing this music, and being able to improvise it on the fly, that takes genius.

Funny story, Eddie was asked about this solo at a clinic before he passed and if he practiced it or spliced bits on the fly as far as deciding what parts to play during this solo spot. He admitted that this night he doesn't even remember. He was so drunk because of nerves and stage fright from it being the first show EVER with Sammy, he remembers nothing of this whole night from the DVD. So he played this not even remembering what he was doing as he was doing it. All muscle memory this point in the show. Bits of songs in the solo: 316 at the start (Later on Balance album), Eruption (Van Halen 1), Cathedral (Diver Down), Spanish Fly (Van Halen II), Mean Streets intro (Fair Warning).
