Way more influential than people give them credit for. Even Van Halen used to perform an entire Black Sabbath album (think it was 'Vol 4') back before they were signed to a record label. Then they did their first world tour as opener for Sabbath. I've seen and heard so many bands that are heavily influenced by Sabbath, it's incredible.

Ozzy was a perfect fit for Sabbath, and the combined talents in this band made them legendary. You can´t really go wrong when picking songs from their early albums. Bill Ward is the heaviest jazz drummer ever heard. If you look carefully, you can see that he's beating the drums with the thick ends of his drumsticks for extra power. His fills are always very creative. He has become my favorite drummer, because I never tire of listening to him.

Tony Iommi (the guitarist with floofy hair lol) chopped off the tips of his fretting fingers in a sheet metal accident and made finger protectors to allow him to play. Unfortunately even with protectors it was too painful to play. To overcome the pain he slackened the strings which made a deeper sound and heavy metal music was born. You can clearly see the finger protectors in this video.

These are the album lyrics, a bit different than the live version here. War Pigs lyrics - studio Generals gathered in their masses Just like witches at black masses Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerer of death's construction In the fields, the bodies burning As the war machine keeps turning Death and hatred to mankind Poisoning their brainwashed minds Oh lord, yeah! Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor, yeah Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah! Now in darkness, world stops turning Ashes where their bodies burning No more war pigs have the power Hand of God has struck the hour Day of judgement, God is calling On their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan laughing, spreads his wings Oh lord, yeah!

A great band from Brum aka Birmingham England.The pioneering Heavy Metal band Black Sabbath was formed in the industrial city of Birmingham, England, in 1968, by four teenage friends: bassist Geezer Butler, guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward.They had the first car that I had seen with black tinted windows. What makes this recording so special is Ozzy uses lyrics from both songs, Walpurgis and War Pigs, mixing them into what you hear and see in this 1970 concert footage. The original lyrics are darker than the antiwar lyrics, if you can believe it. .
@AppalachianMountaineer1863

Yep the label didn’t want the name Walpurgis because it sounded too satanic but they also didn’t allow War Pigs to be the name of the album because it was too inflammatory.

Ozzy did some crazy things but that is not why they fired him. It was his sobriety problems. Sharon Osbourne was the daughter of his manger. She believed in him. She helped and encouraged him to restart his career. And the famous biting the head off a live Bat, happened when he was doing that with fake bats and he didn't realize that the Bat a fan threw up on stage was live.

This is from their legendary concert in Paris (1970). Before "Heavy Metal" became the universally accepted term for this kind of music, bands like Sabbath were described variously as "Downer Rock" and "Atomic Blues". Sabbath were from Birmingham, England, a grim industrial city where, as guitarist Tony Iommi put it, "you either worked in a factory or joined a gang." Such a great band.

Bill Ward is soooooo underrated. He also reminds me of the drummer for the Muppets lol. Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath in 78 or 79.

Happy New Years!! Here is something you may not know. Ozzy has 3 kids. 1 boy , 2 girls with Sharon. Amy has a band call ARO. Not much is talk about Amy. She stays out of everything. So there pod cast is just Ozzy , Sharon, Jack and Kelly. New pod cast are up every Tuesday. They are funny at time. Just look up Osborne pod cast if you like. I think number 11 comes out in the morning.

If there is anything you have heard from Black Sabbath it would be Iron Man, which has been used in the movie and is on the same Album as this, Paranoid.

This concert was played in a small venue (I'm guessing under 500 ppl) before the release of thier 2nd album Paranoid, which put them squarely on the map.

Great Reaction Kathy, Lulu and Donna! That's extra length of guitar string that should be snipped off once the guitar is strung. I don't why some people leave it like that, it drives me crazy, you could poke someone in the eye with that wire flying around like that!!! lol

I recommend you guys the following songs: 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 2. Black Sabbath - black Sabbath 3. The Wizard 4. Iton Man - this was the title song for the Iron Man movie 5. Planet Caravan 6. Electric Funeral and many more classics. I grew up listening to their songs from the 1970s and am still listening to them in 2024. Im now 63 years young. I have the whole collection of their vinyl LPs.
