Congratulations Charlie! Roll on the next 200 videos. Regarding VAT, I'm a chartered accountant (albeit retired) and can confirm that the margin scheme on second hand goods works as you describe. However, it's not compulsory for sellers to use it and it involves a lot of very detailed record keeping (including getting very specific invoices from the people who sell to the retailer) which some retailers may feel is just not worth the hassle. If the scheme is used then the invoice that you as a purchaser would receive wouldn't disclose the amount of VAT as this would enable you to work out the seller's profit margin. It will be interesting to see how Hattons eventually responds.

The hassle for Hattons simply isn't worth it. It would require loads of detailed record keeping AND loads of ridiculous government paperwork to justify the reduced VAT.

From my limited experience of selling to retailers they more often buy job lots, sadly mostly estate sales, so they would have to calculate a value for each item themselves which would be time consuming if your taking in large collections.

@@tonywise198 Hi Tony, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. The cost to Hattons is the staff to administer the program, but where is the return on investment? The excess VAT goes to the government, not to Hattons. So in exchange for administering an expensive program, Hattons gets £0 ROI. That's an easy call for any executive

Hi Charlie. I'm not a VAT man, but I imagine that Hattons would claim a VAT credit on the VAT-paid purchase price (in other words, they would be carrying the second hand stock on a VAT-exclusive basis on their books). Therefore, accounting for GST on the entire sale price would be appropriate. Great vid too. Congrats on the double ton.

I used to work in an amateur radio shop. We bought in and sold used gear in the same way Hattons do. We only paid Vat on the difference between the buy in and the sale price. I don't believe the paperwork was any more onerous than buying and selling new items.

I find it very comforting to know that I'm not filmed when I'm (often) tetchy with inanimate objects. It would make a whole YT channel if I were. Congratulations on 200 videos. All the best for the next 200. Hopefully you won't saw a body part off, trip over any leads or fully deplete your quota of expletives (a constant danger for myself during DIY and hobbying - if that's even a word?).

6:50 You mention "pick-up" issues and using a "Stay Alive" to help. Yes and No... Yes, avoiding the disconnect electrical problem... No: A supplement does not "Fix" the origin of the issue. I see so many people advertising the "Stay-Alive" or "Keep-Alive" systems "...because of dirty track/wheels..." Well, again with the supplement answer. What's needed is clean air, clean rails, and clean wheels... and clean contacts. It time to work on the reasons instead of fixing the symptoms... unless the method of certain "job securities" is a paid position. 29:12 "Thomas & Friends" comes to mind. Such a neat circle of "carnage." Loved the 'pile-up' sound... does the 'missus' watch your videos? Charlie, congrat's on the 200, the planters, and 9.1K views in seven hours. WOW! You are of course, correct John. Stay alive capacitors are no substitute for good clean track. However, when using magnetic couplings you are crippled by just the slightest jerk. Regards, Charlie
