i've been using this video for about a month now. I made my chain whip out of a jump rope and a foam ball from Dollar Tree. It seems to hurt less than the tennis ball. it's slow going because i'm pretty uncoordinated. But it's fun. I've lost 7 pounds using FUN martial arts weapons videos. (I'm also learning Klingon bat'leth from Star Trek.) One specific mechanic I have discovered: when doing the braking action for the whip to stop and catch it: you need to start with your brake hand either even with your head or a little higher. I'm that person who needs these things explained in minute detail, so I share the wisdom when I find it. i'm getting better with practice. I'm working the exercises with both hands. I feel pleased not just getting scale results, but getting more coordinated also. i haven't mastered that thing where you go around your bicep yet; you'll hear the primal scream of victory if i ever manage to do it :P

get knee and elbow pads and riot helmet. Once you get ok enough you can turn tins in to a suicidal weapon. My first was my 20 year old karate belt with two locks on each end no Idea what i was doing. Funny how a blunt round corner on a lock can give you a cut like a knife and a bruise underneath for weeks. If you practice this thing using metal weights have dental and medical insurance. Have had bruises that are so bad they resemble scars. One strike one kill if you land it. Or at least a broken bone with macerated skin. Hit to the head=dead or deformed. Hit to a bone= bone slush torn skin. I dont even want to try the sharp ones if hey are heavy. Im not good at all but man I can dodge a lock flying back at me like a real ninja cause it is very scary. If you have ever hit your self at just a glance that is the damage i have incurred. If some one pulled this out on me over an altercation and was willing to let me go or fight I would fucking turn around and thank them. Great way to become a casualty of severe blunt trauma really quick. No expert but it feels like the type of weapon that does not care which combatant gets the death blow on the first hit. Seriously you can smash a skull like a pumpkin and not now the difference other than going to jail. Idk what skill level this merits but the danger level is high.

Nice video Jake. When I was 12, I spent all my lunch money to buy a chain whip book. It said beginner should start with rope and tennis ball. I was too excited to try it out but I got no rope at that moment, just a huge dog chain. Attached my tennis ball to the dog chain ( almost as big as my tiny arms) and I started swinging thinking it's pretty cool till it got out of control and hit everything around me. My father suggested the cat chain lol and it worked perfectly.

I made one recently and I can say having absolutly no experience with it, that it is very difficult. I found out the hard way thag tenis balls to the shin hurt and leave quite a mark! Nevertheless I am very much enjoying it and it is a ton of fun to handle!!! I absolutly love it, and when im finished I just wrap the chord around the ball and put it in my pocket! By the way I love these videos!!! Keep up the good work!! :)

This is may favorite chain whip video. Very useful key principles, like using your whole body. Indiana Jones shot dude with crazy weapon. You can exercise with a gun in your pocket, but think it's more fun, and more rewarding to exercise using a weapon. ONE HUNDRED EYES!!!! Mantis Master, the Shaolin Wudang Taoist Li Jinbao, or Bayan of the Baarin, uses Jiujiebian twice the length,18 sections (not using 11 section whips). His also has two chain knives on the end. Most vids I've seen guys use two 9 section jiujiebian. Tom Wu uses big one though. Chain envy lol. Six months and still only half done making this Jiujiebian. Decent rings are kinda difficult to make.

That is brillant !! I teach old school, 3 Kingdoms style, we use real weapons only. This way is a lot safer to do. My Sifu had a weapons class and one student was doing the whip chain and couldn't figure out how to stop the figure 8 pattern (# 1& 2 spins). He found out a way, he hit himself almost between the legs with a silly grin.all of us were almost rolling on the ground laughing 😀😀😀, he wasn't hurt, Safety weapons do help. 😃😃😃

When I do the tricep pivot, it doesn't always work. Is this because I'm not swinging it vertically enough? Why do we do pit/tricep transitions? Does it speed up the spin/give it power? Is it to blade/position the body in a safer way against your opponent? Is it just to increase core strength by activating the torso?

I used to wrap it around a persons leg or arm and the ball of spikes or razors would lock the chain so it would make it possible to pull the arm or leg toward me or it would cut in to the leg or arm of the person trying to attack me in my case I would use it only in self defense.
