Today is the day where I am transparent and show my skills (or lack thereof) vs the factory grind on a few Chains including Oregon EXL, Dukes and Holzfforma. We then file a chain and play with the rakers, and then fix it with the EzzDoo Grinder that I have been using for some time.

Hey Joe. Great show, buddy. There is a lot of safety in play when buying a chain and a gauge to file rakers. Obviously, the manufacturer doesn't want us to get aggressive with the chain, so they sell safety first. Those raker gauges are pretty much splitting hairs. I just go by look and feel, I hit the raker gently with the grinder and go by eye. Same with sharpening with a file. The only problem with that is I don't feel right showing people this because they may take it too far and rip themselves apart. Manufacturers are in the same boat, safety first.

Thank you Kenny for the comment. I recently ran my MS460 with a chain that had been filed with a STIHL 2 in 1 and let me tell you, the rakers are basically useless now. Actually, both of the saws I have run where the owner files with that device had low rakers. I say that because, it is simply no fun to run a chain like that for me. Especially with our smooth and fast 5 series Husqvarna saws. Certainly the PTO bearing cannot withstand that sort of abuse. I am not sure even a 400c, 462, 500i or 661 would like it either. I do understand however that getting them right by just "knowing" is indeed an art. What I was surprised about however in my video was how the chain slowed down with a little more off of the raker. It was surely interesting to me. Someday, I will have the touch and feel of it for sure and have an even better running chain. Thank you again Kenny!

Still have a few new loops of EXL. Good chain and used to be under $15 for a 72dl loop, under $24 for a 93dl just a couple years ago. Been pleased with the couple loops of holzfforma chain I've tried. That Duke's chain sure does look hard to beat tho for the $$! Thanks for going to the trouble of putting this together👍🏻

@oakiewoodsman 5 месяцев назад
AP, the Dukes is certainly a great value and I was super impressed with how little/NONE it stretched. I have purchased another 3 loops of it for my MS460 in .063 gauge. I have a feeling that bar will outlast the 3 loops. I cannot say that about the Holzfforma bars at all! When it comes down to chain, if the Dukes stays affordable, I will be buying it there. One thing to consider is there is a shipping charge with them regardless of order size so that does add to the cost of the chain. EXL can be had for a decent price on Amazon. I ordered again because I had another order of parts that I made through them and the coupon code helped make it all worth it. I ordered the last few things I needed through Amazon. Thank you again friend!

If you would like to see to results side by side, you can skip to 20 minutes. If you are tempted to skip, I would still recommend watching the whole thing because it explains what is going on here. This was an extremely humbling video for me to make but I want to be real with all of you and show what truly happened. I didn't directly state this but it is inferred, the lower rakers did indeed slow the cut down on a less than optimal chain. I have never been a person to dull a chain and then take the rakers down more but from my experience, it made it even worse. Thanks everyone for watching and thank you for the support!

Here's my method. On a used but not rocked chain, Oregon or pferd file 7 strokes with the round file 1 stroke with the raker file. If the chain has been rocked or cut dirt, depends how bad but usually 11 strokes and 2 with raker file. Make one of the 2 raker strokes a slight angle so the top of the raker is rounded rather than flat.

Pretty sweet comparison, I’ve ended up landing on EXL or C83 for all my 3/8 stuff. The Oregon is definitely softer but makes it a little quicker to touch up if I tag somthing so usually run that on the longer bars. My hand filing isn’t amazing but been playing with square filing and had some really good results!
@oakiewoodsman
@oakiewoodsman 5 месяцев назад
I sure appreciate you sharing! I have found that the Oregon Chain I have had my hands on out of the box has been VERY inconsistent. One tooth feels as if there is diamonds in the steel and another may feel nice and smooth to file. And yes, that was when it was brand new and NOT touched with the grinder. I like C83 it is just a darn shame when you loose that initial profile!

The only chains we round file are 3/8P/LP and .325, the rest square or HEXA conversion. For us, in our current cutting conditions, the hex and square filed are more durable, smoother cutting, and faster cutting than round file. I use Granberg file guide to convert to hex and regular sharpening to maintain angle (old injuries make it difficult without the guide). It’s easy to do a quick touch up of a stroke or two after a tank or ten(depending on cutting conditions). I also have two modified Granberg file guides setup with double bevel files for square chain, one left and one right. We use a WCS depth gauge height gauge to set depth gauges, usually at 35 or 40 thou with a top plate angle of 25 for the hex chain. I don’t remember what my angles for square were. We’re also running full skip with the 3/8 and .404, full chisel and semi chisel. We are still dialing in chains but so far 25 degree hex with 40 thou rakers has been working the best for 3/8 and .404 chisel, still have more experimenting with semi chisel. It’s not the fastest for cutting cookies but it’s very durable, very low pull, and the cutting as a whole gets done faster. My son hates factory chain compared to my hand filed chain. We mostly use Sthil and Oregon but have some Archer, Husqvarna, Forester, and Carlton.
@oakiewoodsman
@oakiewoodsman 5 месяцев назад
Excellent information for sure! I cannot imagine having the stuff to be able to do all of that. The Hexa and other PFERD square files are cost prohibitive for a guy like me however. I bet if you round filed your 3/8 and .404, they would rip for sure as well. interesting you mention that the chain is durable with your setup. I have never heard of that sort of technique leaving the operator with a "durable" chain. Thank you again and appreciate you watching and not blasting this newer Woodsman in Oklahoma!

@@oakiewoodsman Hex files aren’t cheap, but we end using it less after the conversion. I did start out round file and it was okay but nothing like square or hex. I think the real fine abrasive sand makes a difference, it’s like cutting burned pine and spruce. The sap turns to something like glass and square(and probably hex)chain is the only thing that holds up. Round chisel usually has a weaker cutting point but it does depend on file diameter and down angle with top plate angle.

Oakie; is this the same power head that recently had the lean tune and over-heating stall out issue? If so, what was the remedy? It may be that your oiler is under performing by looks of that fast bar wear and the dry brownbuild-up on that older Oregon chain. I set my oiler to run wide open my saws, especially with longer bars and stillrun fuel out before thebar oil. Have you watched Cotton Top3 sharpencahin; good demo. For hand filing, a fresh and clean file is a big plus.
@oakiewoodsman
@oakiewoodsman 5 месяцев назад
My oilers are all opened up as wide as they can go. I find that different trees tend to leave different sorts of residue on the chain. I often check my oiler to make sure my chain is getting lube in between long bucks and this saw has always produced oil. The saw is in the shop and it has ZERO Error codes. If the issue wasn't on video, there would be no proof. He also told me the saw had 9 hrs on it. I think the hr meter is in the carb however and that has been replaced once. I have watched cottontop sharpen before but I do not remember how he does it... Will try to check it out. Thank you again!

13:02 It might be easier for you to sharpen if you snug the chain up tighter so it doesn’t rock back like that. Just a thought, some people it doesn’t make a difference at all but others it’s a completely different chain assuming rakers are correct.

@@oakiewoodsmanI definitely like the Hexa file and it is pretty much a necessity for us, but don’t be afraid to experiment around with a round file some more. Try less top plate angles and more aggressive raker settings, and mess around with the down angle on the file. I think there’s a lot more you can do with a round file if you want that route. For me, the Granberg file guides and WCS raker height gauge make a huge difference and are the only way I can get the chain as good as I do. When used correctly the Granberg file guide holds the cutter tooth and file very rigid so the angles are consistent and accurate. HUGE HUGE HUGE help for me!!!! It made all the difference Hex files are around 20 bucks(ouch) and don’t seem to last all that long (bigger ouch)so I try to start the hex profile with different round files and make sure the gullet is nice and flat. The file guide is around 60 bucks on amazon, which is not cheap. We have one for hex or round and a modified left and right set for square. The hex file is too big for 3/8LP and .325 cutters so I’m going to mess around with the double bevel files in the square chain file guides.

If you decide you want your chain tighter for filing, don’t adjust it, just grab an old file and stick it between the bar and chain under the bar. File away, pull the file, move the chain, put the file back, ect. That way you aren’t messing with your tension. More complicated to type out than to do 👍🏼

You were darn right there friend! So, I spoke to the shop yesterday and they have informed me of ZERO error codes. They are going to do a pressure test. I have a suspicion the grimlin will be staying hidden. Therefore, the saw must always have a backup to it when I go out. 2 tanks of fuel is ALOT of wear on a chain, especially in hardwood. When I'm cutting hardwood, I give them a sharpen every 2 tanks minimum if not every tank. I run almost exclusively oregon exl. I have some husky full skip for long bars, but the rest is oregon. Oregon exl did not get a fair representation in this test, and it still won😂 that's funny. If I ever make it down there, I'll have to show you how I hand file. Your saws will never cut the same again. Realistically, any of the big 3 will do you fine. Oregon, husky, and yes, even stihl. I shy away from Chinese chains. Just don't trust them, like everything else. Count how much wood you cut out of an oregon chain and then a Chinese chain. The oregon will speak for itself.
