The small carving of this face was made to replicate the one that was carved this summer while camping with some family out on the coast. I modelled it after the traditional 'wood spirits' that are quite popular with chainsaw carvers as they can be done without killing the tree.
I carved this face mostly with chainsaw and chisels. In the video you can probably see me carving with a die grinder for a bit. I thought I would try this technique out, however, did not like it as much as the chainsaw and chisel. So went back to them. The wood - Port Orford Cedar - is the most amazing smelling thing I have ever been around. I kept the shavings from the carving in a bag in my closet in hopes it wood diffuse.
The space I am renting is in the iconic 1000 Parker Street Studios located in the East Side of Vancouver Canada. The art show that is held yearly is called the 'East Side Culture Crawl'. This event incorporates the amazing number of artists in East Van, everyone dresses up their work space and studio into a gallery for the weekend. Then tours go around the area and stop at different buildings. As 1000 Parker Street is the most concentrated grouping of artists the foot traffic was amazing.
