EVERYONE Should Make a Wooden Sword: Easy Project

Today in the shop I am showing you how to make a wooden longsword, designed with historic dimensions from Ewart Oakeshott's book History of the Medieval Sword. I use a piece of black walnut and profile the blade and handle, then grind in the fuller before grinding the bevels. Next I cut out and design the guard and show you an easy way to attach it to the handle without having to slide it along the blade like a typical sword guard. Last thing you do is wrap the handle with leather and oil it. This is a fun version of a wooden longsword based off of a type XIII and XVIII.

Started making wooden swords back when I was 13. Swords and knives, were the first things I started carving. It led me to so many different things I wanted to carve out of wood, which led to rock eventually. But I still like making wooden swords to this day. Wooden sheathes with them and all.

Hi! I was starting to make a couple of these and was not sure about the right wood to use. How thick was the blade? And, about the wood, I was oriented on using beech, but I saw that spruce hardwood is cheaper. Is it too soft and should I go on beech or is spruce still ok for the job?
@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@TheArtofCraftsmanship Месяц назад
I would suggest using a hard wood, for added durability. They can be made from soft woods, but they will dent and possible break easier. I start with 3/4” thick staves.

How did you determine the thickness of the blade as you came to the point on the end
@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@TheArtofCraftsmanship Месяц назад
I grind the blade to the blade profile shape, then grind the bevels toward the edge line, drawn down the center of the edges, and match that with grinding down to the center line on the flat. When get toward the point it’ll naturally start to thin the blade, but you may need to redraw the center line on the flats, or eyeball a straight spine. Hope that explains it.

Thanks. I’m not sure what you’re suggesting. Are you saying put a coat of epoxy on the outside of the blade? That’s an idea, but then it gets more complicated than I want for this project. Remember, the goal is to be able to make it quick for fun, and if it breaks, you make another. That being said, there are loads of other things that could be done to add interest and longevity overall if someone is interested.
