I was a cutter for almost 30 years for logging companies. Even used a McCullough 125 in the early years. This guys for real. That's how you're supposed to do it. When you're out there in the woods and it depends on how much you cut, you learn things to be more productive because your family's lives depend on your abilities. This man is doing what every professional has done since I started cutting. My Father did it before me too. The same way he's doing it.
enjoyed the video!! My Dad was a logger all his life. He started at age 13 and stopped at age 82. The video brought back memories of watching him file his chainsaw. I remember he had a Stihl 090 model with a 5ft bar for the big trees. He had two circular sawmills and he sharpened them by hand as well. He was a wood man !!
73 YEARS OLD.JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNELLFOUND OUT I DIDNT KNOW DIDDLYABOUT SHARPINGA CHAIN;Thank very much,by thw e way 45 years sober;keep up the good work
One million views and damn do you deserve it billy this video is gold. I’ve watched it 5 times and now showing my employees while we’re on lunch break. I own a tree company and your videos helped me more then anything else. Thank you brother and god bless
Thank you for your videos. I am a 68 year old lady and I appreciate your compassion and also that you don't just address guys. I have a little 14 inch battery chainsaw that I need to sharpen and now I am ready to do this. Thanks again friend!
Billy, been cutting since 1977 and love the wood heat, but I have always struggled with the sharpening. What I have learned from you over the last couple of days I can't thank you enough. Be aware that you have truly made a difference for me. Your video of that chain with all the different size teeth just blows my mind. Folks, what Billy has taught me is that if each raker is in proper depth to "each" tooth, then there will be different size rakers, but the saw will cut perfectly straight. I had always used the depth gauge that lays across a bunch of teeth, instead of the one that lays on top of the tooth and goes down to the bottom of the tooth in front of it. Plus when the raker is filed, since the gauge is at an angle, the front of the raker gets filed at the same time it is lowered so there is no need to round it. Amazing stuff here Billy, you are the chain dentist. Plus I learned about the point and the gullet of each tooth, and how to do it free hand. Just blowing my mind, if only I had known this 43 years ago. Thank you Billy, thank you, thank you, thank you. I just now tonight bought the depth gauge. Have any tricks for human teeth?
I can never watch these Chain Sharpening Videos enough. There is always something I missed from the other times I watched. Thank you for making so many Videos, and Get the Gullet.
I have tried so many different guides and watched many different videos, been burning fire wood for over forty years. Your video and the simple explanation is what I have been looking for. Did it this afternoon , what a difference. Thanks so much!!!
Dude, after 12 years as an amateur sawyer I finally got it. You achieved in one video what countless hours of practice and study had yet to achieve. I can now ditch the guides and that stupid grinder I bought from Harbor Freight. Thank you, sir. Today I became a man.
Great video. I miss cutting firewood every year, from dropping trees and splitting it by hand an even stacking it all. But I lost the ability to walk and most days to even stand up. I truly miss them good ole days. Brings back those great old memories watching this video, thank you so much. At least I can still teach others the proper way of doing things with a saw like you are doing.
Thank you so much for doing what you do.Iam 73,friend of bill w for 45 years I have watched so many of you videos my wife realized i wasnt watching when say "here it comes".i had to take down a 75 ft white oak in my back yard and found right quick i didnt know squat about sharping a chainsaw..you showed me the way.have a Husqvarna 61 and aqured a Husqvarna 395xp. "what a saw".i also have and old cs525:clinton just as a show piece."needs a drive belt.Once again thanks so much for being on yourube.
THE best chain sharpening video I've ever seen, with some helpful life advice thrown in for good measure. This dude is the manliest man who ever manned!
Buckin, I remember a little while ago you mentioned doing jobs and giving back just for the spirit of giving. You are dead on, my friend. My wife and I cut and split a big windfall oak on our property last night. This morning I loaded it up and took it to a friend in need of wood to keep his family warm. Completely unexpected, but greatly appreciated. Man, it feels GOOD. Be blessed friends. Love one another.
A lad that was a couple of years behind me at school lost his wife to cancer last year .well iv been tinkering with the idea of knocking on his door some day and asking him if he has some electrical jobs needs doing .im a electrician by trade .i might just do that .
Dude you are such an inspiration. Thanks for the helpful video. I just got my first saw a few months ago and I’ve been addicted to your videos. You have such a positive attitude and such a great outlook on things that sometimes I just watch a video for a pick me up. Keep on keeping on. You’re making a difference in people’s lives beyond cutting and sawing.
Respect and gratitude from Texas for sharing your knowledge. Pulled a 27 year old chainsaw off the top garage shelf. Hadn’t run in 25 years. It’s not the best saw but never had use for something on a pro level. Went through the carb and she fired up. Why spend money for something new and shiny when a classic will do the job. Quickly realized the chain needed sharpening. Having run across your videos before, I knew exactly where to go for no nonsense straight forward info....Buckin’ Billy...Thank you.
That was a whole lot of fun. You got a great personality. I was just watching to get another perspective on sharpening and ended up with a renewed vigor for life. Thanks to you.
@@rayemery3264 Instaportal located at instaportal.net is a scam. The website tricks visitors into believing they can hack Instagram accounts, but all it does is pretend as if it doing something. I guess im randomly asking but does any of you know of a method to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
I have to say I spent the 30 something minutes watching this video . after watching multiple videos from others on how to sharpen the chain. I finally got what I needed from your video to make my chain sharp and cut like brand new again. thank you for the time you put in this video. it definitely helped at least one person!
In a bunch of his videos he says he hits the back of the racker on the back stroke. Seems to be against the saw filing technique if ya know what I mean lol.
@@andrewlafogg4041 i know what you mean but it doesnt do any harm. The file only lightly touches the raker and neither the raker or file are affected. It keeps the file in the slot and lets you immediately have it in place for the next stroke. Lifting it out would be unnecessarily tedious. 😁
Just a Hillbilly from Kentucky here.. I have been using the 13/64 on my 3/8 chain cause that's what I was told to use but was reading the manual last night and it says to use a 7/32 file but the kicker is it tells me to angle my file 10 degrees in an upward motion and even though I haven't tried it I can already say that's not going to feel like a natural motion due to cutting into the strap of the chain and here I find the only video on RU-vid so far I've watched that explains it all. Getting my saw out today and trying that 7/32 file, thanks Bucking Billy for the helpful information. Your the man!!
I tried many times to learn how to do this. Your video is perfect, I finally learned all about it from your video. And I too ended new with a renewed vigor for life! Thanks to you. Thank you Buckin'
Thanks, coworker gave me a saw he couldn't get running. It just needed carb cleaning, but when I started cutting it would just make a fine dust. Thanks for the sharpening tutorial, now it cuts great!
I’ve been using a chainsaw for 20 years for my firewood. It never occurred to me to put the saw in a vise to sharpen the chain. Thanks Billy. Love the videos!😎
THANK YOU! That was amazing Mr. Smith! I've watched many a video, read many an instruction manual, and tried many a time to figure out what you have been referring too ( the boat, get the gullet, the "C", etc.) This showed all of that and then some! I greatly appreciate this good sir. Thank you again!!
Love your knowledge and dig in attitude. Your teaching people the art of having a feel for their work. Feel the file cutting, watch the upper edge of the tooth produce a sliver, watch the gullet. Great work teacher.😎 Thanks, Sid
Just bought two new files and followed your hand filing technique. Took down the rakers and gave it a test run. Cuts Like a champ. I think my file guide will finally be retired. Thanks for your help. Keep up the great work.
I'm 47 ...have called myself sharpening a saw.....i was rong.....thank you for the video.....when I seen your building full of saws I new you were the man.....i watch ur videos all the time love your personality and thank you for showing how to do it right
I’m new here, needed some help hand filing my old chainsaw and now it cuts like a dream! This guy is the real Mac of the chainsaw world! Keep up the good work!
Great video, my last McCulloch, 25 years ago was a 5-49 : steel cable for a starter rope with a rotating carburetor. Lost but not forgotten. It was an experience to hear it run and cut that stays with you. The vexation of sharpening a saw for amateurs like me was gadgets. Always thinking I needed more than a file. Nothing beats you down like self doubt. It prevents you from so many experiences. You saying just get in there and get after it is some great advice. Love your channel.
I'm sitting here watching you sharpen that chain, I look behind me and you have not only me watching you have my wife and daughter watching you sharpen a chain too lol. That says a lot about the video right there.
This is the most informative and best chain sharpening video i have found. We've got 15 trees down and my chain is so sharp now its cutting through so fast it is amazing. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
By watching you on the latest season of Ax Men you taught me 4 things about cutting trees that I had never done before. So I took it upon myself to try them out. I Chop cutted a tree like you guys did. Then I climbed a tree with my chainsaw on a rope and cut the top out of it and went down 3 to 4 feet at a time. As I would cut the tree off I would push it away with my other hand. I was like wow both of those 2 things I seen you all do really work. The other 2 things using the 7/32nds file on my big Stihl chainsaw and a 3/16th file on my little Echo and little Stihl chainsaws. I also throw a weighted rope around trees I need to pull towards a certain way to miss a building etc. I always cut by myself and you guys really helped me overcome the fear of using a chainsaw......THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you so much.I got a pole saw with the chain already on it.. after a little while I saw it needed sharping. . I went through many videos on you tube that did not show exactly how to sharpen the chain or it was too far away or bad lighting. Buckin Billy Ray you got it just right. I learned so much watching this video. I thank you with all my heart. You are the very best teacher. I just loved this. I had my chain saw right in front of my laptop and just did it the way you showed. Just like I was in a class. Big thank you.
What a quality video! I've been watching for a few months now and really enjoy all your videos but this one really drilled down on the "edutainment". Great job Buckin!
Billy thank you for teaching me how to file a saw chain .I finally got it, this video did it for me .I will get much better now with the tips thank you .
Hey Billy lm 74 yrs old still love watching you get the most out of the tent God has given you it's been quite a few years now boy it's been a great journey since day one.All your how to videos simple easy to understand gives even the layman an extra edge .like all those experiments with the mufflers love what your doing all around.Got any tubers watching yet .LOL. Growth is good .Its your Barometer buddy ttys Cliff
This video was so very helpful. I am a journeyman carpenter and love to work wood but really had no idea how to file a chainsaw fast and correctly. The rake gauge is next level. Thank you so very much. You attitude and mannerism is pure gold. Harrison Arkansas. I love to cut wood too.
I feel like factory/consumer instruction say to sharpen on an angle & with the smaller file, so you lose your gullet after a sharpen or two. That means you gotta buy another chain...😏👌 Sly buggers! When you explained the gullet over time, it changed my filing for the better & it all made a bit more sense. I appreciate you for that....so THANK YOU👋😂 Hope 2020 treats you & yours right! STAY SAFE
Yep, this guy is the real deal. I followed my grandpa and my dad around in the Oregon woods from the late 60s and this is how they filed. I still file this way at a relatively young 60 years.
Truly an amazing video. The dig and then let off (Something that I had guessed at before) was exactly what I needed to take my sharpening to the next level. Thank you so much Buckin'. If your videos have helped anyone it is I. Lots of love friend.
I only ever use the one hand to file. I also preffer to run a saw I sharpened myself. I hate cutting wood with most people because once they see me file they always want me to sharpen/straighten there chains up, usually it takes more than a time or two because they are beat or at weird angles and what not. Thanks for the videos!!!
Just picked up a Power Mac 145 yesterday, came back to this video to brush up on my sharpening skills so I can get that little old saw back to work around the yard. Thanks for another great video, as always Buckin! 😊
Hey Buchan it’s Will I’m happy that you’re doing this video I am just getting into cutting and splitting wood and I was wondering how to sharpen my saw all right I’m very happy that you made this video keep it up happy new year and god bless
I was watching thinking, he's not doing "the boat" anymore... and then there it was. :) I love these videos. Buckin's motivational speaking for people who don't wear suits.
I'm embarrassed to say I just bought my first chainsaw at age 45, I'm finally a real Canadian. But seriously. Billy I'm glad I came across this info, super helpful.
That's what you call an impact statement. It's powerful and he knows it. It's like his church when he opens those doors. There's a memorable movie clip in that type of footage.
Awesomeness!! Thanks buckin, really help with my filing. My grandpa and father tought me back 30 years ago (14 years old) how to file. I have gotten away from the timber years ago and now getting back to it again. There's no better feeling and peace it brings to me, hope it does the same for my boy.. Really needed this refresher course lol. Keep those videos rolling and God bless my friend!
Man! What a nice way to learn what is happening while filing and why we should do it this way. Thanks for your time and your generosity. You helped me this morning! Now, let’s go fill my saw😊
I'm an August Hunicke fan and only this year discovered Billy's videos. Watched a few occasionally and not in any particular order. I was looking for info on the Timberline sharpener when I stumbled across this video today. Though old-school in technique, I watched the whole thing and decided to put Billy too on my regular watch list. Excellent camera work, narration, and editing. Very satisfying. PS: Not sure about needing that Timberline anymore (except maybe to use on 1/4" chain). Going to take a look at McCulloch's product lineup too.
Went from learning how to sharpen an Axe. To sharpening chainsaws. Feel like I got my own teacher who’s happy to teach me everything he knows. So very cool and thanks for passing on these earned lessons. I know I didn’t have a clue. Now I have a little little clue. Lol. Thank you bucking.
I’ve been watching your videos for years and I need to say Thank You! Never thought I could sharpen a chain better than a Stihl chain fresh out of the box…I was WRONG! I purchased files for my various chains and I’m impressing myself with how all the saws cut. So thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I've been shredding logs ever since I got the technique it helps when somebody shows you the details. Seeing is believing and I seen it work. thank you!
I really do love filing my saws as well buckin! It's a calming task, & if done correctly can increase productivity. I rotate thru my saws & bring them inside after work. I like a clean/sharp saw to start my day😁👌 Some guys like to sharpen before work, but I guess I prefer after. Hope you had a good 2019 buckin! STAY SAFE
I tend to do it after when i don’t feel time pressure. Too often i’ll Tinker away though until i’m Suddenly aware that I should be home cooking and socializing, gotta keep the balance!!
Thank you again. I studied guitar when young. I was blessed to be around very accomplished musicians. The truly great ones rarely had attitudes. They always encouraged learning and “if taking golf lessons.......learn from someone who’d played the PGA”, so as to limit the busy work and the irrelevant. Thank you for sharing your real life experience.
Thanks for the advice ! I'm going to be brave and put the file guide away :) and really concentrate on keeping my angles right , and getting that C :) . I'm working with really hard wood "Aussie Iron Bark " and it's not kind to chain saw blades . I need to file befor every job , and if it's been hardened by bush fire , it can be toooo hard to cut and even a newly filed blade , it skips over the iron bark hard wood :) that's freaking hard wood :) I've got a huge respect for anyone with that many chain saws in his cubbord , thats the biggest chain saw collection I've ever seen , and your comment , " I'm so proud and humbled to own a chain saw like this " made me laugh when I saw you have at least 50 in the Cubbord . :) I'll get my file singing and skipping just like that , with some practice . Thanks from Australia !
I’ve been cutting Aussie hardwood using his sharpening tips and tricks and it’s been cutting like butter. I now notice my bar is cool to touch instead of hot using the guide and regular sharpening.
*“Why are ya draggin’ yer file back! Haha, no I ain’t!”* 😆. I loved that laugh! You’re having a lot of fun in the video I can tell ☺️ *”Look at it. Freaking sharpolios!”* In all seriousness: you are indeed very skilled at this, and made it much simpler than I ever thought it to be! I’ve done the double angle and it’s very challenging. I dreaded sharpening it because I couldn’t get it sharp, in spite of a sharpening guide! Now I’m excited! 🙂
Thank you my chains have never cut so good after watching you sharpen chains. It's like cutting through butter now compared to how I thought my chain was sharp. Much better thanks
