Chakkaravalli Kizhangu Varathu Araitha Kuzhambu | Ammavum Naanum Episode #14 - Rakesh Raghunathan

This is one of the most flavorful kuzhambus that we make at home using Chakkaravalli Kizhangu or sweet potatoes. The secret lies in the spice paste that's roasted and ground. The sweetness from the potatoes combined with the tang from tamarind is match made in heaven. Watch this recipe as Amma teaches me on the next episode of Ammavum Naanum.
Ingredients :
* Sweet potatoes - 2 cut in chunks with skin
* Tamarind - size of medium lemon
* Water - 2 cups
* Turmeric - 1 tsp
* Salt
To Roast and Grind to a Paste
* Sesame oil - 2 tsp
* Asafoetida - 1 tsp
* Coriander seeds - 2 tbsp
* Channa dhal -1.5 tbsp
* Toor dhal - 1 tbsp
* Urad dhal - 1 tsp
* Red chillies- 4
Tempering
* Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
* Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method :
1. Extract tamarind juice in 2 cups of water and boil the sweet potatoes along with salt and turmeric powder.
2. In a separate wok, heat oil, and add the ingredients given under ' to roast and grind to a paste' and fry. Set aside to cool.
3. Once cool, grind to a coarse paste with water.
4. Check the sweet potatoes if they are cooked and the raw smell of the tamarind is gone.
5. Add the ground paste and dilute with water if necessary. check for salt.
6. Temper the Kuzhambu with mustard and curry leaves and pour over.

The combination of Tirunelveli and Tanjore has produced some great receipts too. The Kerala input adds to it. I don’t understand how people think it is boring to be a vegetarian. For the non veg there will never be a burst of flavours like in veg,instead of smothering it in onion garlic tomato, ginger

Naalu mentiyam kooda poduva illaya? Illennalum nanna dan irukkum My in-laws are. From Trichur; they add a little grated coconut too and call it pulingari! Naturally urad dal is cut out and kadalaparuppu is reduced I interpret it as sambarcminus cooked dal

We are just 2 here in the house. I was living with my in-laws for 30 yrs. They are gone now. My children are away in US AND GERMANY with their families. My In-laws were from Tanjore. So , so many varieties I used to cook in large quantities. Now just cooking for 2 n that too my husband likes selected few dishes n vegetables. Oh! How I miss those days. I just don't miss your episodes n get little satisfaction from watching it.

Hi Rama Akka Rakesh anna wow the dish is super .to day engathila special . this wow very tasty. after yesterday soorya girahanam all rituals today morning this special wonderful. we are orthodox Brahmans Never use that onions, and garlic , for us its a wonderful recipe. even with out tomato or coconut or any nuts or milk would taste this great, my wife tried this today and was very tasty .Dhevahmrutham and everyone on my home liked it, Thanks for sharing such an amazing recipe. we are in USA but when i explain to my friend he came and took little bit and we shared with one of our relatives too all said its a different taste traditional style . Aahaa pramadham and Akka My feel is When i was 14 yrs my brother an Engineer 25 yrs married and blessed with a son next year am 15 yrs old ciththappa i was attending a school function am 27yrs a Doctor when my brothers son school annual day in UK his friends was asking him Do you have a elder brother ? he said no then they said he was sitting with your parents and grand parents looks like you exactly like your bro with veepoothi and all then my brothers son said oooo he is my uncle Chinna chiththappa they were surprised..... now am 45 yrs am a grand father chinna thaththa. am enjoying it people says am too young to be a grand father am looks like 35yrs that wt people says but am happy any way its a kind of love don't missing it its my feel ... we cant get it back now my kids become chiththappa for their cousins son its my feel 😀😀😀😀

Rakesh and mom, made the chakkravalli kozhambu, Mysore Rasam using your recipes. Loved the authenticity of the dish. Felt like heaven ❤️❤️💙💙. Am planning to cook recipes with fresh ground podis. Rakesh, whenever I see your videoclips, I am reminded of my mom’s work in our kitchen until she had a stroke a couple of years back. I used to tease her just the way you do. Ramaji’s “ sitha naazhi” reminded me of my maternal grandma’s usage of the same. Your videos bring so much of joy in my heart as I love to cook and love the tender, loving banter between the two of you. Tell Ramaji that I am a big fan of hers- I too hate the word “mami”😜

Rakesh, why does the black iron vessel always have some previous food stuck on? Keeping things spotless and clean attracts viewers. Could you not pre-measure all ingredients in tablespoons, teaspoons etc and neatly lay it out before Amma enters the kitchen? This will be great for beginners. Also the kitchen counter can be more clutter free and that itself will create a neat visual which will get you more subscribers. .Definitely you can afford to do these things to polish the quality of your videos. This is constructive criticism offered to enhance your content-don't intend to hurt you.
