This Chalk Line Hook Hack Can be Made with a Single Nail
I've been making a using this type of hook for my chalk line for over 20 years. There are many advantages to this type of hook. It makes it much easier to retrieve the hook when snapping long distances. It also allows for a MUCH steeper angle of approach to the edge of the workpiece. This is especially helpful for marking and cutting roof sheeting. I made the hook in this video from a single large drywall nail.

That is cool it would have been great to see you actually make one. It looks like there is some specific geometry going on there. Your technique in construction would also be good to see. Thanks for the video I think it is a great idea.

I've put hooks on my chalk lines for years. I just used a heavy gauge fish hook and blunt the point. The 'C' shaped ones work the best IMO.

Great mod. Now that your vid pops up high in the YT results, you should capitalize on this success by making a thousand of these and selling them by link included in your video description. I would pay $10 including shipping without even thinking about it to save me the time and hassle of going to the hardware store to find just the right nail and setting my drill press, and playing with vice and pliers, etc. I might pay $20. You can give me 10% of profits for the free tip if you want, but then I suppose I would owe you something too for the free tip! 😁
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 2 года назад
Yeah, I've thought about selling them but it's not the direction I want to go. It's a lot of work to manufacture and distribute a product. I'd rather inspire others to be creative and make stuff.

LOL. Never expected this to show up on the tube. I did this a long time ago, maybe 20 or so years back. Only difference between yours and mine is your shank is longer and I don't have quite as much radius in the hook. Shorter shank reduces the tendency for deviation. It is one of those little tricks that I never thought to post up. When guys use my chalk line they always assume I lost the original end and was too cheap to replace. Then I show them why. It is not the end all because sometime you loose the edge, but I can do quite a bit more solo with it.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 3 года назад
Yeah, I've seen just a bent nail before. Same concept. Glad to hear I'm not the only "crazy" carpenter.
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 3 года назад
@@Makebuildmodify It is a mind bending moment seeing somebody else come up with the same solution. I came up with the concept while fishing with my nephews. One of them got their hook stuck on a dock. As I pulled on the line I saw it. I fabed one up the next day, keeping the hook point on plane with the shank but .25" below centerline. Just mind blowing seeing another person come up with the same solution. Nice work sir.

@@Makebuildmodify Bud your so lucky i wish i could work building homes. I worked for a Big General that had a small framing division for about 7 months. Was the best time ive had as a carpenter. Framed 6 restaurants from the ground up and had a blast doing that. Unfortunately the Foreman and his lead carpenter had kids graduate from H.S and suddenly it was slow and 2 guys got laid off . Me being a new apprentice was one of those guys. I live in Northern California and have been working for a concrete construction company for about 10 years and been sitting at home the last month due to all the rain waiting for work to pickup. I love being a carpenter but i hate sitting at home with no work. Anyway thanks for listening to my rant. God bless, stay productive and be safe. Hooah.
