SPOILERS BELOW: Art winning in the end is very much not clear, that’s assumption in your end in in real tennis the move he made is 100% illegal. The point of that scene is not about who won or lost at all tho, it’s about the competition and bond between the two of them reigniting.

Also tennis fans have told me that’s not how a tiebreak works. It would be first to 7. So even if he wins that point he still needs 6 more. So yea def left very open

@@rohanbeer1654 It's the exact opposite. She has a moment of elation at having finally seen a true relationship/tennis moment, even if that wasn't necessarily her intention. It's the same exclamation she makes when we see her playing earlier in the movie and she wins. COME ON!

I saw this last night and was blown away. Excellent film. Who knew toxic love triangles and tennis could be so damn compelling?! The audio design and soundtrack in IMAX were awesome as hell. The end scene was so satisfying. All the buildup to that moment through foreshadowing and such from little moments from earlier in the film. When Patrick did the thing with the serve I was like Oh YES it's fucking GOING DOOOOOWN 😂

I got a strong sense that something Patrick really lost was the feeling of playing a game with his best friend, and I think you see him smiling at the end because he finally got to play against Art where the only thing on Art's mind was beating Patrick. Like they could briefly go back to a moment where they were just competing against each other and had that "relationship" Tashi talks about in that first match of hers we see. They truly see each other, and I think the reason they embrace at the end is because at least some part of them recognizes that they had lost the closest person to them in the world and maybe they have a new basis to rebuild their relationship. I think Art and Patrick also realized in that moment that Tashi only ever drove a wedge between them, and that when you remove her from their connection to Tennis Art actually DOES have a competitive drive (he cares about winning after their duo match, Patrick was just glad he got to play with his friend) and Patrick is driven by a desire to connect with others through tennis. Theres small moments in scenes where you can see that the other tennis players seem to really like Patrick at their college, which is odd because he seems so unbearable in any other setting. That last engagement is also the only time they arent constantly looking over at Tashi, and its the moment that they are both at the top of their game. Idk, I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

You guys misunderstood the scene of Zendayas character. She was already in the city for the Challenger and Patrick told her character that he was going to compete. She didn't know he was gonna be there but once she knew she told him to stay away and that there was no way that he would ever face against Art anyway.

Yeah but I think she said that to motivate Patrick to play hard enough to get to play Art. It was more manipulation by her.

1. Tennis is the new surgery (watch Crimes of the Future). 2. I think they all moved in together and lived/played (mindgames as well) happily ever after. 3. I thought Josh's career would be playing characters like the one he played in Emma. Wow. He can just switch his charm on like Kyrie in the 2nd half. 4. This would make a great double bill with Snack Shack. 5. As someone with arthrosis in both knees.. I felt THAT.

When Patrick goes through Tinder and quickly swipes past most of the matches but then lingers over a guy was a cool detail that adds to the homoeroticism.

i also loved this movie!!! i want to make the point that it's so interesting to me that you call the relationship between art and patrick is platonic/brotherly love and see the nature of their relationship as a more ambiguous/subtle aspects. one of the most compelling/heartbreaking parts of the film to me is that patrick was very clearly in love with art since they were young. i think you can see it starting with how he reacts to tashi asking if they had hood up before. and when patrick pulled art's stool closer to him before he sits down was such a beautiful little detail that has been replaying in my brain nonstop. i thought that was a huge key to patrick's character throughout the film, especially when it comes to his motivation around his and tashi's relationship. and near the end when he asks art if he means anything to him outside of tennis. whenver two of them are alone, the presence of the third is always felt (and when theyre all together, tennis is in the room).

Literally the sole reason for me to watch this movie was Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Not only do I love their scores but Trent's music as NIN changed my life but what excited me more was seeing appearences from his wife Mariqueen and they haven't been on a project together since the short lived How To Destroy Angels project. The soundtrack showed that Trent and Atticus aren't just ambient guys and can still do exciting music with vocals, it makes me so excited for future NIN albums.

I tend to align with Jake's takes and this morning he said masterpiece and I paused and went to see it tonight. Finally just finished the video and really agree with you both! Though I do feel like there's some weird cinematography, like where they zoom into Tashi's face for waaaay too long. My wife also didn't like the way the music was played, which I can absolutely sympathize with but I did like it. I felt like it emphasized the emotions of the scene even if the scene was otherwise quiet OR it was to prepare you for the next scene.

Mike is great but it was Zendaya and Josh whose personalities *brought it* to the screen. And as far as the homewrecker accusations go, Art was the ORIGINAL homewrecker when he caused the argument between Tashi & Patrick to break them up, leading to her injury. ;) The boys were still "friends" until Art decided to play dirty. ;) I felt for Zendaya. These guys were far from Saints and actually pretty sheitty in a multitude of ways.

I did not love this movie, but I enjoyed watching it. The ending did not resonate with me because I wanted one of them to end up as the winner instead of hugging, it felt anticlimactic to me. That, along with some camp moments that unfortunately didn’t work for me (spitting and then making out felt like an anime and the POV tennis ball didn’t work for me). I enjoyed it overall though and I’m glad you guys liked it Loved the camera angle from below on the tennis courts, loved zendaya’s (and everyone else’s) performances, and the homoeroticism present

Spoilers: Art didn’t win because Patrick threw the game. It wasn’t a fair game. Patrick won because he had control over the outcome of the game. He manipulated Art through the entire match. But him then dropping the racket to catch Art at the end is where they flip that around, and they both become winners through rediscovering the joy of the game.
@jpeg204
@jpeg204 3 месяца назад
I don’t think that’s correct. If anything’s it’s heavily implied that Patrick decides to NOT throw the game, and instead give Art a fair fight. The movie ends before we see who truly wins, but the last round they show it’s obvious that they are both going as hard as they possibly can. Patrick revealing that he cheated with Tashi to Art is what ignites their competition in the game again, and allows them to truly give it their all and have a purpose and passion behind the game. That’s why are all seemingly happy at the end or at least have an emotional release, because they have regained passion and competition in the game, and also because it represents all of their relationships, Patrick isn’t holding back any more, he’s giving it to Art straight, and Art is able to keep up with him, and they are competing on that court as friends, like they used to. Tashi is happy because she sees that both of them have regained their passion and are giving it their all, which is what she always wanted from them and herself above all else.
