Imposter syndrome, the psychological pattern of doubting one's abilities and feeling like a fraud, is a common challenge in cybersecurity. In my journey, this manifested as doubts about my legitimacy when advising executives of multi-billion-dollar companies.
The question persisted: could I genuinely offer advice on maintaining compliance or addressing gaps? These mental battles were difficult but integral to my cybersecurity professional growth.
The technology aspect was straightforward. Knowing what I needed to look for allowed me to prepare an audit plan. The true test was overcoming mental blockades, keeping my cool, and asserting my value and knowledge in high-stakes situations.
Overcoming imposter syndrome is a continuous journey. It's about acknowledging worth, standing firm in expertise, and navigating conflict with emotional intelligence.
