There is so much to discuss regarding modernity and how we can add our basic Islamic teachings in it. advances. it is an umbrella term but it does cover technology too. nothing is wrong with me wearing a modern casual shirt and pants (I am male) in my religion or in my society. but I'd look absurd walking down the street if I were to wear a huge turban or something out of context in my current society. YQ is stating that its fine to be modern as long as you stay a Muslim first. Allahuailam. JazakAllah for your response brother (or sister)
It’s the idea of Islam reforming. The following is taken from Rand corporation: “Modernists want the Islamic world to become part of global modernity. They want to reform Islam to bring it into line with the modern age. They actively seek far-reaching changes to the current orthodox understanding and practice of Islam.” Islam cannot be reformed - it is perfect and for all times. The change the West wants to see goes beyond ‘technological advances’.
o hate their parents" is acceptable. and the word modern is used like, "This new type of clothing is the modern clothing line" or "these old televisions with the hump in the back is no longer modern" we know as long as it is in accordance with our rules, it is fine. and that is what Yasir Qhadi is trying to portray mainly on the elders and parents in the audience. Modernity and technological progress are two different things. Yes, the Islamic empire made a mistake for not accepting new technology - Islam encourages people to learn and educate themselves, so new technology and more education are not haram. What is questionable though, is 'modernity' as the West defines it. Qadhi doesn't clearly define modernity here; he speaks in generalized terms. The West's definition of 'modernity' is the idea of people accepting their values and norms.
If this is the ‘flow’ that Qadhi is talking about, as Muslims we cannot go with it. Parents and children being friends is not “modernity”. What is modern in this society is for children to dislike or even hate their parents. The modern relationship between children and parents is horrible. He has to be clear about his terminology. Also, when we use words like ‘modernity’, we have to use it as the West defines it. We can’t give it a new definition.

Qeghez or paper was invented by Uyghurs back then and named as qeghez by them and spread to the other parts of the world. However, ustaz Yasir mentioned Uyghurs as Chinese. Uyghurs are under Chinese control, however they should not be entitled as Chinese Muslims or Chinese. Other wise what Yasir Qadhi said about paper is 100% true. I am an Uyghur and we still call paper qeghez up to this date.
Chinese didn't make the qaghez (paper) & they don't call it qaghez in their language. UYGHUR people did & of course chinese owned their invention just like how they occupied UYGHUR muslims's country East Turkistan. Tibet and Mongolia as well. So called chinese muslims are NOT CHINESE. They are UYGHUR & Hui muslims or Tunggans. Chinese and UYGHUR Language, culture and of course religion is TOTALLY DIFFERENT thats why we can't practice ISLAM in our own country because of the chinese government.
I believe you are accidentally confusing the term 'modernity' for 'usual', or 'typical societal behavior.' As Muslims, we know that we are not focusing on this subject in order to change the religion itself, but instead we are taking from this lecture that it is ok to move forward in life and society just as long as it doesn't violate the rules of our religion. Modernity as an Ideology is an illusion. In the end, Western ideology is nothing more than a series of fads that just come and go. What the west tries to portray as "modern" and "civilized" can better be defined using the words "Recent" and "Temporary". Westernization and Modernization are not synonymous. The illusion that they are so is just a delusion upheld by the fact that, at this point in time, advanced technology happens to reside in the west, making the West merely APPEAR more modern. If you take that technology away from the west, and give it to XYZ group of people, Western ideologies such as liberalism, feminism, Nationalism, and Secularism will be seen as barbaric and premitive. Those who aim to be civilized and portray their own ideologies as civilized must adopt, adapt, advance, and create modern technology. Unfortunately, the lands in the East tend to have elites that buy western technology rather than create it themselves. This is not the way forward. This is literally why the Ottomans joined and lost WWI. Technology can be defined as modern. Ideology cannot be defined as modern, merely portrayed as such. That's why I say that modernity is an illusion.
