"people are like, you're playing Jesus, how could you play a heroine addict?" man....if Jesus had come into today's world, a heroine addict is _exactly_ the kind of person he'd reach a hand out to. to remind them that they're human. that they can have value and purpose. get them to believe in themselves again. and thats exactly what he described, trying to get into the role of that character. its not about portraying a caricature. its about finding the person in that role, the events that brought them to that place, and the struggles they go through

My spirit literally rejects dark scenes, I can't watch garbage on TV , I was a junkie, and worse,and Wicca , I am free,but I do feel the dark pull. I am strong in Christ .

That’s so true about your spirit rejecting what you watch. I can’t watch tv anymore because of all the brain washing and the evil quality. My spirit sinks and I physically have to reject it

That’s exactly what God did to me when I gave him myself, my work and family. I gave him my worries and told him I will do what I can do and not worry about the rest, for him to support me where I can’t. I am richer financially and in my family than I’ve ever been. I’ve never made or thought I would make 6 figures in my life. And I see my family every day! God works when you let him have your stuff!

Choosing a role in digital entertainment: does it glorify sin in the context of the project? If so then don't audition. Someone has to play Pontius Pilate and Judas but they are not glorified.

That is so true Jonathan! I watched this show called "Supernatural" I watch all seasons and when they got to the last one. My holy spirit was like no this is not good because they made GOD look like the bad guy and the son of Lucifer/antichrist a hero. I get it's just a show, but you still have to look for signs ya know. It just didn't settle with me. Isaiah 5:20

Johnathan is the greatest actor for Jesus I have ever watched. Seems like a pretty holy guy in his personal life too. I've been following him and his prayer hours and got me inspired to read some of his favorite books and get back to praying again

Remember that playing a part has an effect on all who watch you. If the character you play is evil, that will have a spiritual effect on the viewer. Violence being portrayed in a movie cannot be discerned by the brain as anything but real.

I would love people’s feedback concerning The Walking Dead show. I get that feeling of my soul rejecting certain shows. Usually those that glorify drugs and sex. Shows about stripping, which glorify it all. However, I watch The Walking Dead and yet I don’t feel that way. I know the show is gory, but most of the violence is towards zombies, to me it feels like silly halloween stuff. The violence between people which there is a lot too, I don’t find to be glorifying. These killers are seen as awful and throughout the show one of the main themes is about staying close to their humanity and trying not to stray away from it as the world is upside down. There is even Father Gabriel a priest who talks about his faith throughout the show, Hershel who reads scripture during very difficult times. Though yes the show can be extremely gory to the point where I have to turn my head, the theme of these people trying to stay in tact with their souls remains. You can tell the difference between those in the show with no humanity (which are not glorified imo but rather seen as evil) and those who have done bad stuff but are struggling deeply and want to do better. When I watch the show I feel like a spectator just observing the characters. I don’t feel like the message is saying violence is good. Carl wanting peace, Rick keeping Neegan alive for hope, father Gabriel trusting in God, Hershel with his bible, Tyrese trying to cling to the good parts. Morgan sticking to his values. Also I like how Gabriel remained faithful throughout all the seasons. They didn’t make him eventually lose faith like some shows do. This is personally how I feel. I have diagnosed OCD and worry excessively about doing good and not participating in evil. I realized that being a spectator of something doesn’t mean i’m agreeing with what I am watching. At least as an adult at this point of my life. A child is easily influenced therefore, I wouldn’t recommend them watching that. There is evil all around us. Trying to avoid it 100% is impossible. However, having a strong relationship with God means even when we are spectators of such thing we are not strayed away from God. Now this is NOT to say we should indulge in t.v. Watching too much means you’re spending less time with God so that’s what we should watch out for. Also shows that glorify Satan, sex, drugs, are just disturbing to me. Shows like Jersey Shore glorifying sex, made me stop watching it. If a show is not clearly showing the difference between the good and bad it’s a no. Though if the underlying theme of the show promotes good values like trying to stop violence then I feel less disturbed to watch. You’d think a show like TWD would disturb me more but because there is a clear distinction between evil and good I can find God through these characters when they are trying to find faith and hope. I don’t want to make excuses though either. This is why i’d like your opinions. I want to live for God so naturally less t.v will mean more time with God. When I do watch a show I try to find God in the show too. However, we shouldn’t indulge in tv imo! If i’m spending my days with God I shouldn’t feel distanced from him when watching a show. If I do it’s probably because I am not spending enough time with Him. Spending more time with God=less t.v. Read your bible everyday, talk to God constantly. If a show isn’t making you spend less time with God then that’s good. Everyone is different though. It depends your character and if you feel like you can. If you feel like it takes you away from God and influences you stop watching the show. I do think as we get closer to God we do naturally start moving away from t.v. As I got closer to God I just naturally didn’t feel like drinking, or partying. God should be #1. If you can watch a show and keep God #1, then i’d think that is great.

Sooo spot on, “my spirit rejects them”. I was a hardcore PJ fan for 30 years, when they went on tour so did I. I was a fan of hard rock in general and I just deleted alll my music except those that praise God. It’s a minuscule trade for the streets of gold, but yes, the Holy Spirit rejected them… All praise to Jesus, my Savior 🙏🏼.

Jonathan Roumie is my favorite actor so far that has played the role of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you Johnathan you have done an amazing wonderful job playing Jesus.

I received a call back after attending a casting call.My wife at the time got mad at me when I said “I will not put the LOD’s name in vain.” She was mad that If I landed the job I would refuse it if they refused to rewrite the script. Every show I watch and every actor on that show breaks the Second Commandment constantly. It is a Mortal Sin and you break that Commandment every time the show is aired. I do not if there is a show out there where every actor sometime or another continuously breaks the Second Commandment all through the show. You guys will see what I mean when you watch your next show. It is like it is a requirement to commit Mortal Sin if you want to work.

We do need more faithful Christians in our media! Our presence is almost bar none these days.

Just discovered this channel! I really enjoyed this topic. An actor's job is to reflect truths about humanity so that we can reflect on ourselves in light of who God is. At least that is a best case scenario. Thank you for this interview.

I think a great example of what Jonathon is talking about is Neal McDonough. Guy has played many different characters throughout the years, both bad guys and good guys, and always brings a nuance to every character he plays. He has spoken before about how his faith has played a role in his acceptance of particular especially roles with gratuitous cursing and roles that would involve in romantic scenes with women other than his wife.

Before I used to watch every type of shows and stuffs. When I think about god I feel troubled to just open Netflix or Amazon. No matter how the series exist I just feel like my mind says please don't watch it. It is not worth it.

Definitely a great portrayal of Yahushua. His point about being aware of what you watch is a strong one. Before I watch any movie or tv show, I use Common Sense and enter the name of the show to make sure it aligns with my values. Too many Pg-13 labels are wrong. They not only have strong language and violence, but sexual content. Keep your eyes on things that are good and your path will remain straight.

I imagine the challenges are the same everywhere. We have priests that molest altar boys, we have preachers that molest children, we have people in power who know things go on, and because of money and power turn their backs. We have people In our highest positions in both parties that commit sins. We all do. Therefore humanity needs Christ. The bible does say, he didn't come to condemn us, but to save us from sin. None of us, is immune from sin, or temptation. Of course I do realize many think they are, or don't believe at all. It's just my opinion.

I love this perspective: find Jesus in the character. Because Jesus is in every person we meet; whatever we do for others, we do for Him.
