At 720m, Rhinog Fawr is a dinky mountain, but don’t let the height of the Rhinogs fool you - they are some of the wildest, most rugged landscape in the UK. The bad weather and low visibility combined with the difficult terrain made this one of my most challenging trips to date. I just love this place!
A boring but important note on being sensible(ish): these mountains and conditions are challenging and potentially dangerous. It has taken me years to feel confident enough in my abilities and my gear and I still have much to learn, but never intentionally put yourself beyond your personal capabilities. Navigation is essential in these parts, and if you aren't taking a tent, always take some form of bivvy. Always be prepared :)
In the spirit of being prepared, I’ve just ordered some of the waterproof OS Active Maps - my map was getting well scuffed up in the rain
Apologies for the wind noise in this, I was using an external mic with a muff but it got wet and became kinda useless. As you can probably tell, this was another phone jobby as my camera is still being repaired.
I arrived at the Rhinogs with a flat tyre, a huuge thank you to Alan, Lucy, Oscar & Tom for putting my spare on for me despite my locking wheel nut being a wonky pain in the ass, and the guys who lent your pliers to straighten it out, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH
To see how to set up a tarp tent, check out: • How To set up a Tarp T... . If you need to use rocks, same configuration applies; just place the rocks where you would usually peg, then plonk a few more on for good measure
2 weeks after filming this trip I returned to Rhinog Fawr with ‪@AshOutdoorsUK‬ & found the exact spot that I camped - I’ve added this at the end to show you my pitch in good visibility :)

You're a very adventurous girl!! Brilliant! But please invest in your safety and purchase a personal rescue beacon, they are quite expensive (roughly £250) but if you ever stumbled down a foothole or slipped etc and broke a leg/hip/ankle etc and you can't get mobile phone signal, you risk not being found before succumbing to exposure or injuries. For the sake of £250 it's not worth the risk. Dad talk over, now, go have an amazing life full of adventure and exploration!

Good advice, defo invest in the rescue beacon. When you are young you feel invincible, but a simple fall as happened could leave you in serious problems. Like insurance you hope you never get to use it, but nothing better to have if you need it.

A great video , thanks for sharing . You’re obviously a very capable, skilled, experienced hiker, but I did feel concern and I do endorse the suggestions about emergency contact equipment as things can go so easily pear-shaped , as well as maybe a garmin ? Sorry for the ‘dad’ bit , I have daughters in their 20’s and 30’s so I guess the ‘parerntal’ kicks in every now and then . Take care

great adventure! on the cooking in tents subject...never do it, carbon monoxide, will kill you and you wont even know about it. aside from the fire risks obviously. army rations with heater bags might be a good investment for those times you cant light a stove.

Thanks Rooster, yeh I usually don't mind cooking in an open vestibule in a soggy weather situation but not in a closed off tarp tent. I've never tried army rations, a few people have mentioned them. Just had to look up the heater bags - interesting!

Ive been back to that particular area of the Rhinogydd my entire life, literally. A very special place to me.

Thank you for taking us along this challenging hike. Quite a learning experience. Something to consider for increasing your enjoyment of future hikes is to find a local orienteering club and join it. Benefits include navigation practice, developing an eye for the best routes, managing safe travel through bad terrain, and more. It would also open up more possibilities for hikes that may have been more challenging than your current comfort level tolerates. Take care, WildBeare.

Nice. You could have used the alcohol stove for cooking inside the shelter. No problem as long as you don't spill the alcohol on the ground or your sleeping pad/-sack. And since you only need to cook some food or drink, it would not burn for long so no worries about carbon monoxide (and certainly not in those windy conditions). ( And If you worry about the flames getting to high before the stove "blossom", just keep a lid or something solid handy to hold some 20-40 cm over the stove to prevent the flame licking the roof of the shelter - until it settles down and blossom)

Great video Claire! I love being out in testing conditions like that. I tend to camp with a tarp as well as I love the options it gives you over a tent (plus less weight and pack volume). Might be of interest to check out Papa Hikers channel as he does loads of tarp videos and demonstrates ways to pitch it that's fulled sealed to any adverse weather. One he calls the lengthwise pyramid is my go to and can keep one end open or seal it shut depending on the conditions. Look forward to your next adventure!

Judging by the comments, you’d have no problems finding company to go along on your hikes. Although I guess that would take away from the particular character of peace and self-reliance you seem to enjoy. Kind regards and good hiking to you. 😉

I've watched this one so many times now. It's simply cathartic for me. Like simonr6171 below said a few years back... "I like watching these .. before bed... makes me ... appreciate having a warm cosy bed..... Well spoken. Me too.

I have so much respect for you. I've done 8 wild camps now and not all great weather but you keep such a positive happy vibe. I love it! Your vids are better than mine too by a country mile. Thanks for sharing and take care. Atb x :-)

I’ve been following Bushcrafters on RU-vid for a long time. Some have been producing videos for 15 plus years and have less than 30 thousand subs I’m now seeing more and more females doing this. And within two years they are over 100,000 subs. And the woman who show off their bodies are over 1,000,000 subs. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Regardless of what I just wrote, you are producing terrific content and the video quality is above average. Your attitude is also amazing. Pushing thru issues and still smiling. Keep it up. I think you will keep acquiring subs. Fun channel to watch for sure I miss my adventures. I lost my house that I had in the largest rain forest in Alaska due to a mud slide. Got nothing for my $300,000 house because it was an act of God. Now I live in Alaska where there are no trees and we get winds over 45 MPH weekly. And over 100 MPH yearly. No camping here, lol. So people, get out and do it! Don’t wait for the following week. Do it now! Because the life you have grown accustomed to can change in an instant.

This is amazing! You are so tough. I’m not surprised you didn’t sleep well though, in those conditions!

This is pretty insane. I get like 3h good sleep max in a comfortable tent on a clear windless night with no rain. I can't even imagine how difficulty it would be to deal with conditions like this. Great perseverance!

Really enjoying your videos 👍🏻 You love Snowdon don't ya 😀 Some Rewilding is happening there by the looks of it which is brilliant. Lots of Wildflowers and Fauna recovering with less grazing 👌🏻 You sound like you're from Bristol?

Yr right the mountain is going nowhere, but there are many places like that in the uk Scotland has lots of remote wilderness, summits and gorgeous views , keeping me busy with 282 summits above 3000ft and lots more other peaks lochs waterfalls bothies , Iam biased tho 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏔 if you get the chance to explore some of Scotland I highly recommend also there’s lots of child friendly walks camping spots and adventure, and northern lights are blessing us with appearances now 💚 x happy adventuring x

Excellent! But tarp in WALES?! Uhoh, tent with sewn in groundsheet every time. I've camped in all seasons, all weathers for nearly 60 years, so I know a little of what I'm talking about (still got plenty to learn). I've had several silly arguments with people about the use of tarps, but they are a non-starter for me compared to a modern ultralight TENT, e.g. Vango Xenon. Thanks for your vid.

Wet plates of meat? Try buying a pair of SealSkinz socks. Brilliant bit of kit to keep your dainty plates of meat dry. Reinforce earlier comment regarding personal rescue beacon - Garmin Inreach; together with using the MWIS BEFORE you venture out onto our wild and woolly bits of countryside. Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance - Perhaps! Good production techniques don't come without hard work. Good effort.

I think you'd like Denali National Park in Alaska. They intentionally didn't put in any trails ... all backpacking is cross-country. Plus you get to see tons of wildlife ... grizzly bear, black bear, moose, mountain sheep, wolves, caribou, deer, lots of birds.

your enthusiasm is awesome, where you are is beautiful. Being 1 person alone, you should get a GPS emergency tracker. You go down just hit the button and the monitoring company sends help. Thank about it.....keep the great videos coming, being able to journey along with you is fantastic!!!

I've always used a bivvy bag, all seasons, all weathers, Exmoor, Snowdonia, Cornwall. Perfect provided it's made of a breathable material and it doesn't get punctured! But you really do need some sort of basha to keep you dry if it rains when the time comes to get up. It usually does and I've never had one relying on the bivvy to keep me dry and low profile, especially the latter!
