One realized the limitations of the English language in trying to translate subtle nuances of Urdu or Hindi poetry! The poetry in Indian languages is metaphorical and the phrases if literally translated do not convey the larger hidden nuances! Let me illustrate this with an example in this song; As you can make out the singer is a courtesan or "Tawaaif" (Not quite a Prostitute)! She hails from a respectable family but is forced into this profession by circumstances! When she sings "Yeh charag buzh rahe hain mere saath jalte-jalte" the English translation you read is these burning candles are dying out along with me" The nuance here is she likens her life with that of a candle lighting stray nights of other strangers! And the word "Yuhin" may mean casually, Watch the movie! It is a classic.

So basically the movie is about a courtesan dancer who falls in love with a forest ranger, which was forbidden at the time because the courtesans were there to entertain the royalty and acted as brothels as well (but not as cheap as brothels). Therefore, they elope but get caught and this song is sung after that as she cannot live a life with her lover. She has to continue doing her job of dancing for her "customers". Yes, it is a train whistling because she met her lover in a train. She doesn't die in the movie but after the release of this movie, the actress (Meena Kumari) died due a liver disease. Fun fact: the director of this movie is Kamal Amrohi, who was Meena Kumari's husband but he physically abused her during their relationship and therefore she started drinking alcohol and hence died due to a liver disease.

Pakeezah's music is an epitome of immortality! Ghulam Mohammed Saabs composition with Lata Mangeshkar's voice and Meena Kumaris acting!

This is the kotha, the ‘house of ill-fame’ and the character played by a Meena Kumari is the favourite courtesan because of her poetry and singing. The performance is called a mujra, though this is an atypical example. Watch ‘inhi logon ne’ from the same movie..that’s a typical mujra and is being watched by many men and the Madam of the kotha. The sound at the end is the whistle from a locomotive that can be seen passing over the bridge beyond the fountains we saw. The train has a major connect to the narrative. There is another song called ‘thade rahiyo’ and that is another mujra but very dramatic. These films used songs to further the narrative and often had coded messages.

She actually died in real life soon after the movies release of cirrhosis of the liver. Its so sad. The producer director is her husband Kamal Amrohi

Meena Kumari , actually did die just after the release of this movie and never got to see the stupendous success this movie enjoyed after her death ! Movie critics called it “ Poetry on celluloid”.......that’s how beautifully crafted was this film! Mercifully, the story had a happy ending , so the audience could go back home with a modicum of joy and satisfaction !

I was always intrigued by the sound of the whistle in the end and on top of that, the mysterious aura of Meena Kumariji. Knowing that this movie was her last movie just makes it all the more tragic. All of these are what makes this song so much more memorable.

The song is one of my favourites...but the movie!!.....is legendary with amazing acting from Mina Kumari and Raaj Kumar.

The sound was the whislte of the train. The earlier trains used to be steam engines with carriages attached to them and the whistle used to sound like it sounded at the end of the song. Once while she is travelling on a train, she is fast asleep. A guy enters the train compartment and is smitten by her beauty and leaves a note for her praising her beautiful feet and advises her not to keep her feet on the ground or else they will become dirty. When she wakes up she reads the note but could not find the person who has written it. She is now longing for him and whenever she listens to the train whistle, she rushes to see the train with the hope that she will unite with the guy.

Some context: In the movie, Meena Kumari plays a courtesan, known for her beauty and dance performances. As she is travelling by a train one night, a man sees her and is completely taken by her beauty. He has no clue who she is, and leaves her a note - "Your feet are extremely beautiful, don't place them on the ground." When she reads it the next day, she is dumbstruck - her very profession requires her to dance. The note leaves an indelible mark on her. For the first time in her life, someone has seen her for who she is, and not her profession. Men have always desired her for her beauty, buy here is someone who admires her beauty without wanting to use her. She is unable to forget the note and yearns to meet this man again. The lyrics allude to that night and the things she feels thereafter. 'I met someone.... on my way..... my night (life) has come to a standstill...' as after that encounter, she views herself differently. (He calls her Pakeezah - the title of this movie - which literally translates to pure, untouched - a complete misnomer, considering social mores). The very last lines 'The lights are dying out.....' refers to her hope that she will someday meet this man again in her journey; a hope that burns within her and she is afraid will burn her too. Interestingly, even the rhythm in this song mimics the sound of a train chugging along, and incidentally Korbin too was rocking exactly like one would in a moving train all throughout the song - that effect is intended. The train whistle at the end is a recurring motif throughout the movie. When she hears it, she remembers that night, the man and the note he left her, and it reminds her of her heart's truest longing - to escape her life and inevitable fate, to find a man who will love her for who she is, and accept her as she is. The whistle is also used in another song in this movie - 'Thade Rahiyo' - with a similar performance by Meena Kumari. There, it happens in the middle of the song, and distracts her - temporarily making her forget her reality - and long for something more. In this song, she dedicates the entire performance to that man on the train, even though she is entertaining another 'client' and the whistle comes in at the end as an 'encore' of sorts - as though even the train is echoing her own thoughts.

Whoever translated this has done a great job. However, it is impossible to sub Urudu to english cuz the language in itself is on another level of sophistication. The way the lyrics go in Urudu, you imagine her 'chalthe chalthe...raah mien', and that image is so different from the image you get from 'walking down a path'. Its nobody's fault. If somebody asks you for time in that Urudu, you'll modulate your voice just to match the poetry that language casually throws into the air. Love from a Malayalee!

I remember wondering about the reason for the train noises and did some research on it a while back. If my memory serves, the movie Pakeeza is set around about the time the British presence in India was felt either by their occupation or by partition. British influence as well as India experiencing major economic change was also felt greatly by the introduction of a railway system to the country, a sign of great shift or change. In the movie, the director used the whistle of a train to signify major plot changes in the storyline.

It was weird reading the subs.. but then it's very tough to translate and convey the deep poetry of a ghazal in English.. A ghazal is a multilayered, deep and philosophical poetry form.. something like a 21yr old scotch..

This movie took 36 years to complete. The makeup artists did a great job to keep the look of heroin almost same even after 36 years.She was very ill during the end of shooting.Most of the dances are shot at long distance so that the dummy artist could perform

The guys Kamal Kapoor is a supporting actor, the main lead is Raj Kumar who is known for his unique dialogue delivery and acting skills. The sound of whistle you heard at the end of the song was actually train arriving at the station, probably tell us abt main lead’s arrival to the city.

To answer your question why men sit and watch women dance can be portrayed similarly to modern western strip clubs. In strip clubs, women dance on a stage mainly with a pole while men gather around the stage to watch and applaud them, some are also seated around a table or at a bar in the club. The only difference you see in this video is that women do not remove their clothes in some places in India but only pleasure men by dancing and offering them wine. If a man then wants to spend personal time with a specific woman then that would require an extra payment and a room would be provided for the two. So this place works as an exotic dance club/brothel. Modern Indian exotic dance clubs which are known as Kotha and the dance is known as a Mujra have picked on western strip club culture making the removal of clothes while dancing more popular. The reason why the woman is sad in the video is because most exotic dancers/prostitutes do not choose this line of work and are usually forced into it with extortion. They are brought up in these places from childhood either because they were orphans or forcefully sold by kidnappers, etc. The girls are well fed and nurtured and taught dance from early age and are not exposed to men until they come of age. The first time a woman gets to perform infront of an audience may be pleasing for the club but a very sad moment for her as it’s a signal to the start of a very difficult life in which she will expose herself to many men and whom she will sleep with over the years. The extinguishing lamps is a representation to the extinguishing of her inner soul as she is losing her purity over time. In this video you will notice the woman has a sense of fear through her body language and a tint of shyness making it difficult for her to make eye contact with her audience. This is how it’s meant to be as it is representing one of her first performances infront of a live audience. That's the tragic irony the story. Now she's in love with this unknown guy whom she never saw, and is sad. Although she's performing. The song ends with the whistle of the old train Engine of Coal. She's pulled to run and watch the train in vain.

The train you heard was symbolic to the moment and place when and where she met with her someone special.. and that's train!!! The guy laying down came to enjoy her song for money. He wanted to have her for himself but she didn't loved him. She is waiting for her someone special she met. She is in love with someone else. When she says "the lamps and extinguishing..." it has two different meanings, first, the time is running out for her and the love she longs for and second, the night is ending and her lover is not here yet. And yes, she dies in the end of the movie(spoiler). Since she is a courtesan and they cannot have a normal life and family like other girls. She wants her lover to take her far away from her damned life. She keeps waiting for that day. In the movie, she is invited to sing in a grand wedding of a very rich man. When she arrives and sees the groom she is heart broken because the groom is the man she was waiting for all these days. The man(groom) recognized her too and has soft corner for her but he didn't had the courage to go against the society and can't marry a courtesan.

Dear Rick and Korbin, Kamal Kapoor was the cousin of the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor. Pakeezah was a path breaking movie, acted, directed superbly and the music was phenomenal. Meena Kumari was indeed a tragedy queen as she had a failed marriage and Dharmendra used her as a stepping ladder to get work and he wasn't there for her when she turned alcoholic and she died in a tragic way.
