Years ago (up to the 1990's), we all used to refer to the country as 'The Ukraine'. But, more recently, it turns out that this is how the Russians refer to the country, because 'The' Ukraine used to be the name before independence from Russia. Recent events have changed that, so naturally we just call it 'Ukraine'. EDIT: that's also why we say Kyiv instead of 'Kiev'.
