Incredible shoot out between Flyweights of the highest order! Up-and-down battle this, Park making a successful defence of his WBC (lineal) Flyweight title. A must watch.
great fight, I remember reading the ring and other magazines about these fighters back in the day but unfortunately we never had a chance to watch them at their craft. Thanks for posting.
Park was one of the hardest-hitting flyweights, and defeated legendary Miguel Canto to win the WBC title. He arose from a first-round knockdown to finish Espada in the second. Too bad Park's career cratered shortly afterward !!
I though Espadas would knock out Park in two or three rounds because of Espadas' power, but Guty was just five feet with a short reach of which Park capitalized.Park was five-four,had great power, but couldn't beat southpaws, which explains his losses to Shoji Oguma. Also,Park's chin often betrayed him, which cost him the crown and then his career.
Why the referee stopped the fight?? Guty looked ok. I see that Park did such a great fight but the referee's stop made the fight something controversial which could have been an 'MORE' epic for Korean boxing lovers.
Yeah, I don't see too many flyweights in history beating Park when Park's on his "A" game (unfortunately too rare). It would have to be guys like Harada and Chang--guys who can match him in terms of speed/skill and can out-work/out-will him.
Also, I agree that many "very good" flyweights would beat him as well. But they'd have to be tough, persistent guys who pack a big punch. I really do not see any pure stylist types in history beating Park at his best. (It's a different game, but Park was essentially unbeaten as amateur in over 100 fights, and I believe his only official "losses" came in an early domestic jobbery when he was a total unknown, and an equal howler in the Montreal Olympics v. a Cuban fighter who got the Gold).
Korea still had black and white pictures in 1979? You'd have thought they'd upgrade by then! And Park had what it took to be special. He just didn't take it too seriously.
Korea was a surprisingly backward country even until late 80s. I know, because I lived through those times. And yes, talent-wise, Park was special. Too bad he possessed neither the brains nor the heart.
@alfarabi73 @kedbuka for me Park's 'a game' was too sporadic for me to think someone more suited to beating him at his best wouldn't get the job done. I'd pick him to lose to as many 'very good' flyweights from history as I'd pick him to win. And who's saying Park is an ATG? He was fucking good though. As was Oguma (more on him very soon)
Imagine SIX-FOOTER Panama Al Brown, who began his career as a FLYWEIGHT before winning the bantamweight crown, fighting FIVE-FOOTER Guty Espadas? On the other hand,five-three-and-one-half Park was just ONE INCH SHORTER than lightweight champ Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini!!!!!!!!

Flea, I agree with both 1) your claim that Park's "game was too sporadic," and 2) your implication that he was not an all-time great (though an all-time great talent). But again, I am speaking of Park at the top of his game: He was one of those guys who was scintillating at his best, but his best moments were very rare, due primarily to laziness that is probably only matched by Chang among the notable Korean fighters (but unlike Chang, Park didn't have much heart and couldn't gut out wins).
Yes, Park pitched a near shut-out against Canto - whom some consider the greatest flyweight ever. But then in the return match, Canto should've won but got robbed in Seoul. Best on best, I'd still pick Park though; Canto was tailor-made for Park, though he was the greater fighter, given his accomplishments.
