In short, the Jedi should have thrown Amidala out of the Senate and appoint Shaak-ti instead...maybe she wouldn't have won the Senate against Palpatine in the end, but at least she would have come up with a nice bloodbath about it ,....,
@@ImInSpainWithoutTheS Well, I don't like the idea of her killed defenseless, but on the other hand, regarding the whole SW universe, would just say "normal Jedi mission risks" (for her) , and "at least clever villain move" (for the Separatists).
Palpatine already has movies. You could technically argue that episodes 1-6, the real Skywalker saga, is also the Palpatine saga. He was in every movie, manipulating everything behind the scenes to fit his every whim, except for episode 4, but his Empire was still in it.
@@wingy200 What if we do? That's not really a comment directly related to the topic at hand and I would consider it to be something entirely different. We could have a movie, or a set of movies, or even a series about him alone and then Palpatine could be introduced later on and show his interactions with Plagueis. If he wasn't there at the beginning, it's not exactly a story about Palpatine. If you wanted it from Palpatine's perspective, you'd have to begin with him as a child and finding Darth Plagueis and getting training and he'd have to be the main character. You could theoretically make a Plagueis movie/series that leads into a Palpatine movie/series if you wanted to go that route, but it wouldn't include Palpatine's full story because most of it has already been told in the existing movies.
Palpatine's ability to manipulate everyone from the Republic to the Jedi, to Anakin, to Padme, to the Trade Federation to the Separatists shows what a great villain he is.
I think it takes away from the story of the prequels though, since it means literally everything that happens is the result of the Emperor's manipulation :/
He did, he not only kept it, he expanded it so much that he gave it a new title-an upgrade from a "supreme" elected official of a democracy to a god-damn monarch.
I have always loved the politics in it. The moral questions in the franchise. The deeper meanings in the franchise. Always loved them. Ppl bitch the politics in SW, like wut lol? Or like the Canto Bight scenes in TLJ.....like wut. Those scenes are so good tho.
@@theemperor1379 The politics, while interesting, were jarring to fans who expected something mythical like the OT. That's why people hated them when they were released (the bad acting didn't help either). Politics in stories like this aren't necessarily a death toll for any series (look at GoT), but the way they're presented can rub people the wrong way. It should've eased audiences into the politics, grounding them in the familiar, mythical setting before discussing taxation and trade blockades. Can't say the same for Canto Bight. Remove that side quest and nothing of consequence would change. It was a spectacular waste of time, for it didn't present anything interesting for the characters to do (granted, the characters weren't interesting to begin with, but I digress). The war profiteering angle didn't inform the rest of the film or trilogy. It would've served a purpose if one of the characters turned their back on the war effort, but instead everything went back to the status quo.
"So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause..." Even when I first saw this movie, when I was barely 10 years old, this sentence made me understand something about the twisted way evil works. Congratulations, you managed to make Palpatine even more frightening than he already is
@Alvi Syahri Octavian Caesar: "In order to ensure the security and continuing stability, the Republic WILL BE REORGANIZED INTO THE FIRST. ROMAN. EMPIRE. FOR A SAFER AND SECURER... SOCIETY"
Liberty? What liberty? The Republic was a rotting blotted corpse, saturated with regulations and corruption. Not all worlds enjoy the benefits of being a Core world. Many beyond the inner rim suffered at the hands of the bureaucrats that claim to represent them and are shackled to the corporate Monopolys that own them. All that palpatine did was beat them at their own game.
I love Episode I for one of the reasons other people hate it - the political intrigue. I love watching Palpatine's subtle machinations as he carries out his 30 plan to subvert the Republic. He's almost Little Finger-esque. We weren't supposed to be shocked to find out he was the bad guy. Like Anakin, we were supposed to know who he was going to become and be afraid as he gathered more and more power.
Comparing Palpatine to Little Finger is an insult to Palpatine. He is a political genius, monstrously powerful sith and many more things. Little finger in none of them.
@@josepablobonillajimenez6297 epi 1, 2 and 3 are *masterworks* if you compare them to the ´sequels´ or whatever people call the shitty disney fanfiction movies
@@Njordin2010 actually I love the prequels, Im probably biased since I loved them as a kid, when I grew up their flaws became apparent but still cant shake my love of them, so im just trying to be objective and say that episide two is actually the most flawed in my opinion, but yeah as flawed as it is, this flaws are related to some cheesy dialogues and some monotone scenes (like padme/anakin scenes) but the sequels are flawed in a more base level, starting with the fact that they are heavily lore breaking, which I think is the very least you could do with a Star Wars movie, and that the writers decided to press a reset button and destroy all things our heroes had previously achieved just to show us a "familiar" situation, which I think is terrible, and of course rey, that I dont hate her as much but it is obvious that she can solve any problem that comes her way with a wave of her hand with barely any knowledge of what the force is
Prequels: Palpatine has to plan, work, and wait for years in order to take power and dismantle a thousand year old Democracy from within Sequels: He used Sith magic to create a fleet out of thin air
@@LordVader1094 This is basically what the new trilogy should've been, except instead of just the New Republic dealing with its own problems of corruption, bureaucracy and weakness, it would also be a reformed Imperial Remnant along the lines of the Fel Empire dealing with its own internal crises and they have to work together to survive these issues, especially with a new Sith threat emerging threatening the fabric of both nations. Throw in Grand Master Skywalker and the OG Jedi Praxeum (not the BS one from the movies, but a more optimistic sort of Jedi Hogwarts) and boom everybody wins. The compromises and lessons learned by the Jedi, Republic and reformed Imperial Remnant would for the bedrock of a new story, which as always with Star Wars is analogous to our own reality.
I just got swtor 2 years ago, i now strive for that title, "LoreMaster." Im gonna take a good guess, that you earned that title and made a youtube channel first based off the codex entries of swtor. This my "star wars theory" (pun intended)
I see absolutely no legitimate reason to dislike the prequals. I think the issue was people who had the back story pictured in their heads for so long, from 1984 to 1999, and then it didn't match up with their own picture of it. That doesn't detract anything from the story of them though. I feel strongly George's vision makes those six movies, certainly among the greatest stories, period, not just movies, of all time. The recent three, excluding Rogue One, that's sadly a different story. . . .
@@bubbagump2704 I do consider the prequels to have excellent stories, but it's undeniable that George's insistence on micromanaging every aspect of their making completely ruined them as actual movies. The stories in the prequels were completely mishandled in every way possible. Read Matthew Stover's novelisation of Revenge of the Sith if you want to see what that movie could have been without Lucas' meddling.
And this is one of the reasons why I love Star Wars prequels. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the Empire. It took Palpatine years of planning, scheming, infiltrating and manipulating to achieve control of the galaxy. He was the master puppeteer and his journey to the top was believable, mirroring some events of our own history. That is far more satisfying than crushing all enemies in seconds using some lame Deus ex Machina. Sadly this is exactly what the First Order in the sequels have done. The New Republic was wiped out in seconds. Really? They had no other military bases or anything on other planets? It should have most of the assets of the fallen empire! It would have been far more interesting to see a major conflict between the New Republic and The First Order, instead of seeing R̶e̶b̶e̶l̶s̶ Resistance again... I could also mention how Luke had to train a lot and endure failure along the way, while Rey just seems to win at everything and has no flaws, nor requires any training in anything... Buuut plenty of people have already covered that. IMO the only good Star Wars film to come out of Disney so far has been Rogue One.
That`s exactly what I`m talking about. It took many efforts for Palpatine and his master Darth Plagueis (Hego Damask). I mean if you just imagine, that everything was planned from the beginning it`s just impressive that Palpatine succeeded. He was able to deceive an entire galaxy, the whole Senat and even the Jedi Council including the most powerful Jedi, like grand master Yoda. All the years of planning, scheming, infiltrating and manipulating you mentioned, these years aren`t shown that much in the movies. If you just watch the movies, Palpatine is shown just as the villain, but without any background information about him, you won`t have any clue how many efforts Palpatine had to deal with. It`s a pity the films don`t show it better. But when the Prequals were released George Lucas wanted Palpatine to appear myteriously. All in all Palpatine is a tactical genius and it`s impressive how he invaded the Republic that cleverly.
So say we all! George Lucas gave us a fantastic meaningful, deep, gripping and moral story over his saga. Episodes 1 to 6 were sheer brilliance and a timeless classic. IF ONLY WE HAD SEEN HIS SEQUELS. It is truly sad that he LEFT THEM his scripts and story treatments for a final 3 episodes, that Mark Hamil etc seemed to love. If they had produced those, I am confident that we would have had ONE STORY that was cohesive, ONE SAGA, PROPER CHARACTERS, AN ACTUAL PLOT and meaning to the galaxy and the Force. It sounds like he was going to tell the tale of "Pass on what you have learned" that Yoda gave to Luke. Of Luke up against a hidden dark sider (probably Plageuis who was seeded into ROTS) and the Whills (super beings in the Force and the whole midichlorian thing explained) over the path to immortality and the Force itself (with the help of his father force ghost). In addition a completely fractured galaxy post Endor, with the Alliance (under Princess Leia and Han) uniting with the Imperial Remnant on Coruscant to defeat multiple warlords, criminal gangs etc to reform a galactic wide orderly New Republic by saga's end. Instead we have an unholy mess with TFA never being a real Episode 7. It's opening crawl destroyed the entire premise of the saga. There was no continuation. No exposition. No logic, or sense, no story. No characters (old, or new as Lucas intended and wanted). No actual plot at all. What a waste. And oh what could have been. Nothing makes sense post ROTJ, since TFA does not continue onward from it, or Episodes 1 to 6 as a whole. What happened to the orderly Empire, the Alliance, the "Return" of the Jedi, the galaxy? Who the hell is everyone? Where the hell is everyone for starters? Who the hell are these random new characters, especially the rude person who tells people to stop holding their hand and why are we focusing on them, versus the galaxy, or some type of plot and the family saga? Who is the villain and how the hell are they in charge? It makes no sense to have a random villain with no backstory suddenly miraculously in charge. It would have been like Episode 2, or Episode 5 having Grand Supremo Stupido or Silly the Hutt in charge without any explanation after the respective preceding episode. The sheer brilliance of both Palpatine's planning and brilliant rise to power legally, the struggles of the Jedi to defeat him are all thrown out the window and made ridiculous against instant unexplained takeovers before TFA even starts. And to top it off to have a New Republic at inception already (not what Lucas intended) to only destroy it with a ridiculous weapon not even part of the plot is terrible storytelling. Compare the emotions of Alderaan by the Death Star (which was actually part of the plot, and not shoehorned in), or Naboo's invasion, or Order 66 - people and planets we connect with versus random planet. We have no Kira, or Jedi students Lucas envisaged. No Luke, Han, Leia, no villains who make sense. No plot. Rey is rude, rough, coarse and irritating. Doesn't belong in any Star Wars story, let alone the saga itself. I fully CONCUR that ROGUE ONE (and all its characters) were the only good film so far post the George Lucas era. That actually had a story, fit into the universe (and ironically into the saga unite the so called sequels in name only), and had wonderful characters and WORLD BUILDING. If only the people doing that film had done the sequels producing George's actual scripts. Oh what might have been.
Wow, I`m speechless. I recognized the passion you`ve put into this text just when I had read it the first time. I know, it took a while to accustom to the Sequals, but I accepted them. Imagine: There has been many sceptics of the Prequals when they were released. Now they are a part you can`t take away from the franchise anymore. Perhaps Disney can save the new trilogy with the last film, so that everything makes finally sense. It just needs time. The only thing, that annoys me: Instead of the Original Trilogy or the Prequals the identity of the actual villain is uncertain yet. It would be a shame if the producers just introduce a random villain without any background information (like Snoke). This villain would never reach the level Palpatine had. It`s as you said. But unfortunately Star Wars isn`t produced for a view fans, Star Wars is produced for wide masses of people, who even don`t have to know the other films to understand the new films. It is a industry for masses, not for experts or nerds. That`s the sad truth.
Sargon i dont know what you mean but yes the old republic had some serious military arsenal yet as the imperial empire they had worthless units in their military arselnal with the At Ats being really low end in tech but i must say we them only one time as they took out the enemy base and that was it i read smewhere that all that military (including the republic star destroyers were all scrapped ) in order to exchange for credits needed for the death star but still if they retained the old republic vehicles then the empire could easily devastate civiliations and take over their home planets and yet destroy other planets at the same time now that would be one hell of a ruthless empire
Honestly, a series going into the political intrigue of pre-TPM covering Palpatine's rise to power in the lead-up to the Naboo blockade would be brilliant. Unfortunately with how much Disney have shown they don't want to establish the political aspects of the Star Wars universe, I doubt that Filoni will be able to sell that more mature look of the galaxy at large to the Disney execs.
This should be a show, like palpatines rise to power, it could be made just like into house of cards , like every once in a while he breaks the fourth wall
actually you should watch the 3d clone wars, its not that, that would be hilariously awesome with the fourth wall element, not really incharacter iwth star wars but you know it would be hilarious, a bit of robot chicken, but the 3d clone wars is amazing for its character arcs, the begining has cheesy moments, but by the end of season 1 you will have had some amazing space battles and ground fights etc
Yeah blame Carl Schmidt for that he literally invented the legalities, theories, and the concepts behind the idea of emergency powers and the concept of the state emergency And his unwelcome ghost typically rises up in a likewise unwelcome fashion whenever anyone of legal historia comes out discussing the topic
Hmmm... You must not know your ancient history. The idea of a strong, unified leader, chosen to be dictator for an emergency, dates at minimum to the Roman Republic; during times of peace they operated by senatorial decree, but selected a single ruler to lead during times of war. The very last selected dictator of Rome? Yea, a slightly famous guy named Julius Caesar. Oddly enough, the system worked quite well for hundreds of years, individual rulers whose powers were far reaching actually returning those powers to the central system repeatedly.

@@h4724-q6j well, Star Wars was around the story of the Skywalkers and Palpatine didn't make much more headway in the OT other than Vader's big bad boss. It's a shame that the character building of Palpatine in the prequels is good but not the main focus. But, there are other things I felt fans were more tied to other than old wrinkly Palpatine.
Palpatine had great intellect and vision. He could see the victory that was waiting for him in his future. What he failed to see was his own demise. He saw himself as Generator Operator and Destroyer, but in the end he was just a man. He played everyone around him beautifully, but he played himself better than he played anyone else.
His main strength is politics, when the Empire was firmly established there was little political gain to be made. It became an Insurgency/military problem, something he wasn't equipped to deal with.
As much as I hate to defend anything in the sequels (I truly do), the Sith prior to the Rule of Two... pretty much did operate like a cult on a galactic scale, so that part isn't so surprising if Sidious had totally abandoned Bane's laws by then.

@@ripussr816 I don't disagree with you at all. He was brilliant all the way until his fatal misstep in RotJ. XD He seemed as much 'with it' mentally as he ever was even in Episode 9, but then they pulled a Deus Ex Machina of Rey somehow being able to hold back an even *more* powerful Palpatine's lightning with just a little effort, where Mace Windu struggled with a far less powerful Sidious in Ep3. Meh.
The special order series were emergency directives covering a broad range of senarios. Of particular note in this case are orders 65 and 66. 65 is in event the chancellor commits treason, removes him from office by any means necessary and places the capitol under martial law until a replacement can be voted in. 66 is in event the jedi commit treason, removes them from command by any means necessary and hold the line until replacement officers arrive. Mace Windu should have read the GAR's owners manual XD
Watching this in 2021 hits even harder, i'm not american, but frankly, i think the democrats in the US have launched a coup using that Trumper riot in Washington, because, with all the censoring of apps used by Trump supporters and the calls for more censorship of the internet, the whole "you canot question the results of the 2021 elections", while the 2016 were constantly questioned for these past 4 years, the whole deployment of troops in washington for the Biden inauguration, the whole narrative about the capitol riots being somekind of treasonous sedition act and etc. It all reminds me of my country in the 1930s, where a failed commie revolution was used as a pretext to shut down democracy and give the transitional government complete power over the nation "until the situation stabilizes and the threat of a comunist coup is over", which took about 15 years.

I also enjoyed the politics of the prequels. I knew there was going to be since it was the rise of Palpatine as well as the fall of Anakin that the prequels were about. I remember how excited I was when they said "Senator Palpatine" to the fading hologram on Naboo just before the invasion

And yes, I got A. I summarized him as a modern fascist figure that can play by the book of democratic rules.
"Prequels were shit" -> No.... there's more to the story than just laser and lightsaber battles. The only thing that was shit was Anakin's attempt at flirting in Attack of the Clones.
Ninja Kuma - Let's Plays, Reactions, Parodies the acting and dialogue in the prequels was shit. The storytelling wasn't too terrible save the Midichlorian BS
I much preferred the light saber battles, rare as they were, in the original trilogy. They were rare, slower in pace, and looked far more like a duel between people who are also trying to hold a conversation. And there was far more and far better dialogue in those duels.
Ninja Kuma - Let's Plays, Reactions, Parodies They weren't very good but they weren't that bad either. And there was more story in the orginal trilogy than just swords and lasers
Ninja Kuma - Let's Plays, Reactions, Parodies They weren't rare we had one for each movie. That's far from rare. And them being slow is not realalistic. Real sword battles are very fast because if you move slow your chanses of winning are 0 because the enemy will easily see what you are doing.
For those who dislike the prequels, I would suggest to stop viewing them as Anakin Skywalker movies or Jedi movies. I would recommend watching them through the lense that they are Sheev Palpatine's movies full of his manipulations, patience, and game of chess to make the Republic kneel. Even if you don't see him that often, I think of him as the focus point and "main character" of the prequel trilogy, and every other character is just Pawn #1, Pawn #2, Pawn # 3, etc.
I love the prequels, but they were badly executed. The dialogue and the overall filmmaking was pretty mediocre (atleast in the first 2 films). I feel like if George had taken a bit more time with the script it could have been great
film making is a race, films are created by the time they are made in, the phantam menace feels like the most excellent part of hte nineties because those actors and the flim crew did it all in the nineties and released it in 99, they were living that era, the clone wars is the entry into hte millinium, and the revenge of the sithe is once the war in iraq has started, a film reflects its era of inspiration as much as its era of creation, the cast and crew are a living emodiment, and you simply sometimes have to roll the dice or your film will not get made, tahts why great films sometimes dont appear as great as they could be, because film making and writing is always a race, life is a race of plotting and creating
why is it you assume that? lucas haas always been open enough about who provides what lines in the films, he even has a documentary for the creation of the prequels, whats more likely, is something you will probably hate, that george lucas has been writing scripts and releasing them to other studios and writers to actually come up with the movie, he may even be a undocumented director or film scene supervisor for a few films, he does have the full schooling and classical training, but what is extremely like to have occured is that he has written film bare bone scripts, probably not to much dialogue, but scenes and filming angle suggestions, and general ideas for characters, in fact for all you know he wrote the basic ideas for "Predator" and gave it to someone else, and that is why FOX, the studio Lucas uses got to produce it and basically own/distrubute the Predator Franchise, as a sort of test and to give something to help everyone out, it was produced some years after Return of hte Jedi, and i could see a certain link between both films, and Predator is extremely well designed visually, and it has a more earth like dark gritty yet bright atmosphere, just like a George Lucas film, he always uses bright lighting so people can see the scenes character, plus thiers some very clever special effects used, all hall marks of a George Lucas film, and it came out in 1987, 4 years after he was done with the majority of his films
It is sad that this continues to be a franchise for the kids, despite the possibilities for much more dark, contemplative and adult complexity. I am not completely sure that the newer movies are much worse than those movies i loved as a kid in the 1980´s. Its just that people grow up and it is much more profitable to continue to aim for the younger audience. Its all really about what makes economical sense.
He is my absolute favourite. He tricked his master and incinated the whole war played with the whole galaxy basically. He tricked the Jedi the politics and everyone that was there. He got to rot out most of the jedi and built an empire.
Personally, politics were okay. But having the politics in the prequels did bring that extra depth to the Star Wars lore and brought in information about how Palpatine got power and the transformation from the Republic to the Empire.
That’s why I loved the prequels, I watched them as a child and loved the lightsabers, as an adult I still do but I understand more of what was really happening, obi wan might’ve nearly killed anakin but it didn’t matter, it was too late and palpatine was too far along. And as a history buff it’s incredibly similar to the nazis and what we’ve seen in our own world time and time again, it’s why I don’t buy the “Star Wars is for kids” argument because as a kid you don’t understand this. Unfortunately I think the days of Star Wars like this is over with Disney in charge making “kids movies”
And the absolute beauty of palpatines full plan, and the ability to analytically break it down and find that everything that occurred was all towards palpatines plan.

The sad contradiction within the Star Wars universe is that the Sith were, to an extent, correct. The Republic as a galactic government was unsustainable. It tried to be a centralised form of control whilst being open to the multitude of varying opinions of differing species all holding different values. In order to work, the Republic would essentially have to lessen its central power, and become little more than a delegating power between factions within the galaxy. Or, it would have to cnetralise completely, focus on one single form of rule at one time, filtering other points of view through that form of rule. Hence the Empire. The only real problem with the Empire is that it creates a system where ultimate power is vested in one, and formidable power vested in the few. And in a system like that corruption will run rampant. And it's not that power corrupts, because it doesn't. But it is an amplifier. It will take what little corruption might exist and give it full vent to grow and stagnate. To some people power is a burden rather than a vice. The whole issue of galactic government in Star Wars makes me happy, because it shows that there are problems that even the "good guys" have with their methods of ruling. In others franchises, to use Star Trek for example, the principle government is shown to be essentially unflawed. The only problems the Federation ever seems to have is that their admirals are a bunch of cunts, and the people living on the fringes don't have it as great as the people living closer to the centre. It's utopian and unrealistic, but really that's kind of the point in Star Trek. it's an idealised future, rather than a reflection of reality.
The Federation suffers from the same problem that Iain M. Banks' "The Culture" does. Both aspire to creating the perfect, utopian, society but both exist in a universe populated by threats. In both cases the illusion of Utopia is maintained by having very ethical morale standards in public and imbuing a minority of people with the job of getting their hands dirty, protecting their perfect society from the dangers. Both the militaristic part of Star Fleet and The Culture's Special Circumstances division wind up with the same problem - repudiation and punishment by a society that only exists because of the crimes that patriots are willing to commit in it's name.
"The Federation needs men like you, doctor. Men of conscience, men of principle... men who can sleep at night. You're also the reason Section 31 exists. Someone has to protect men like you from a universe that doesn't share your sense of right and wrong." - Luther Sloan, to Julian Bashir
@@jeterpakab5133 the past? Are you joking? Did you even pay attention to whats going on in the world? Theres still politics like this. And non politic people, like corporations like Nutella etc. everyone just wants power. (Srry im not trying to rude)
Well Anakin/Darth Vader was suppose to be Hitler, and Palpatine was suppose to be symbolic of Hitler’s Rise, or more so his Propaganda Machine. Hitler started out trying to free Germany and help them (Anakin’s intentions) but as he rose, he was made Chancellor (Vice President) of Germany, until the President died in 1934, making Hitler the leader. As Hitler obtains his power, he ends up killing Democracy with a Dictatorship through his 3rd Reich (3rd Empire/Rule) for Germany. Hence the small amounts of Symbolism and Similarity between the Empire and the 3rd Reich/Nazi Germany.
Plo Koon no. Disney killed SW saga all together. What you saw is just an illusion of greedy and ignorant people who think that a brand is a soulless thing that you can do whatever you can, squeeze money out of it and leave the rotten corpse behind. That’s what they have done with SW.
Arguably, the greatest villain of all time. He simply plays everyone’s hubris against themselves with incredible cunning and patience. In the book: Darth Plagueis, as Palpatine is killing his master, he says this line that sums his character up perfectly: “I needed to learn from you. No more. No less. To learn all of your secrets, which I trusted you would eventually reveal. But what made you think I would need you after that? Vanity perhaps? Your sense of self importance?? You’ve been nothing more than a pawn, in a game played……by a genuine master”.
@Anonymer Nutzer Napoleon wasn't really a bad guy too, only an enemy of the british empire. And there is a big difference between these two things Sorry for bad english.
This doesn't fit either one of them. Neither of these claimed they ever would give up the power once they had full power. Eventhough the dictators in ancient rome were temporary during a crisis, Caesar was only once named dicatator and that was dictator for life.
We need a movie about palpatine when he was younger. We would see how he got into the dark side and we would see darth plagueis. The movie would eventually lead into the phantom menace and we would get scenes with darth maul and when palpatine killed plagueis in his sleep. EPIC
Ultimate villain, having almost no weaknesses and absolutely no redeeming qualities. Guy is loyal to no one, believe in nothing, don't try to justify his actions, and downright enjoys being a manipulative, lying, power hungry, blood thirsty, backstabing monster.
We all know, that`s a lie. He was keened to get rid of democracy all the time by causing the Clone Wars, because democracy was the only thing between him and unlimited power and authority.
Yes, he was elected legally, because the majority of the Senat voted for him. These events took place in Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace 32 years before the battle of Yavin, when he still was a senator from Naboo. But once he was elected to the new Chancellor of the Republic, he gained power by fueling war. Because of the Clone Wars the Senat gave him more and more power and authority. This happened through elections to. But once he was powerful enough he reorganized the Republic into the Empire and with the Empire ruling the galaxy the tyranny began. Reflecting these facts makes me realize you`re actually right. It originally was democracy, that led to the Empire and to the tyranny. But tyranny also depends on the person, who has the power. If Palpatine had been an ordinary Chancellor with good intentions like Finis Valorum, there would have never been tyranny. So we can say, that manipulative persons like Palpatine don`t have to conquer the galaxy by violence. They just have to deceive and to manipulate the right persons and the voters and then letting democracy doing the rest. @Fat Guy thank you for this aspect, it made me think about this topic again, so I could correct myself.
Raphael Oberle A demagogues best tool is the people, democracy itself can be tyrannical, hence tyranny of the majority, but restricted democracy or democratic forms of government such as republican and constitutional governments are usually the best ways to prevent tyranny. The United States should've been a good example due to the constitution and the liberal principles the founding fathers held, but tyranny has been slowly rising along with authoritarian views.
you could have included Tarkin's line in ep4: "The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."
I really appreciate this type of world building, and while I understand why some don’t like prequel politics, I quite enjoy them. It’s a tragic reflection of corruption and evil within our own system at times, and an enthralling look at the politics of a galaxy far far away at others.
The politics in Star Wars date back as far as 1977. Midi-chlorians, battle droids, the Jedi Order, CGI heavy environments, and the politics. They helped the universe feel real and believable, they add immense depth to the Galaxy and Star Wars wouldn't be Star Wars without its in World politics. The difference between George Lucas's politics and Disney's politics, is that Lucas's politics serve the story and feel genuine, while Disney's are ham-fisted and mean to appeal to the real world now
Lucas' political themes were just more genuine and real. The original six films was a commentary on how America has become what it swore to destroy, once a beacon of freedom, now a bastion of the same authoritarian imperialism it fought against in its creation. Meanwhile Disney's politics are about inclusivity which is good but it falls flat when you see how little they are willing to commit to it. I'd respect them more if they actually commited to those themes by doing something that would be controversial like having a non binary character or something. But they would never because then they can't make billions from conservative countries like China.
@@ExternalDialogue so you basically say they have to add more gay/transgender/whatever charackters in order to make a good movie? Not a good storie, not some decent narrative logic, just some non - binary charackters and progressive quotes about SJW, and thats it? Are you really that geniue?
@@user-rd6zt3jq7r star wars has always been edgy with its politics, the OT critiquing US imperialism and the cold war while the prequels discussed the weakness of American democracy and how corrupt it is. We are currently in the middle of a civil rights movement that has a massive reactionary opposition. The first two star wars trilogies were both contemporary in their political themes, why shouldn't the third one be too?
@@ExternalDialogue what do you mean by a massive civil rights movement? segregation became outlawed in the 60s and homosexuality has been legal since 03. so what exactly do you mean when you say there is a massive civil rights movement?
The republic is corrupt they never care planet in the outerim like tatooine and geonosis that’s why there’s so many criminal and slavery rise on the outerim , and then he came to solve all of that , even he gave job to the civilian who doesn’t have a job, as a stormtrooper . Y know during the clone wars the production of the clone trooper is not cheap and that’s why they stop using clone , if you watched the clone wars the money that’s supposed to be used for education and for the people who needs almost run out just for war.
And you know what? Despite the fact of him being incredibly evil, Palpatine is 100% right, and I actually agree with everything he said about the Republic.
He created the crises and made sure the Republic was not capable of dealing with them effectively. It worked well for thousands and thousands of years before him, after all
"The Republic is not what it once was" And that was true. The Jedi thought the Sith were no more and got kinda arrogant and they didn't carry the light they once had and the Chancellor used this to his advantage.
Perhaps Ben Franklin don't realize that only through security can liberty be achieved. During Ben Franklin's time, slavery was still a thing and the rights of African-Americans were virtually non-existent. Only through amendments and force of arms did the slaves be liberated, at the expense of the loss of liberty of the slaver's right to enslave. Or why did Ben Franklin approved and even be a part of drafting a new Constitution that gives more power and security to the nation of the United States of America while removing certain liberties and power from the states? Because under the Article of Confederation, the United States was unable to enforce liberty from piracy in the high seas or unable to ensure that their veterans be rewarded for their sacrifice by being liberated from want. They were begging at Valley Forge, so why must they be begging at their own homes? It was also unable to give the frontier people the freedom from fear of Indian attacks across the border because they don't have a standing army nor a way to finance such army. Meanwhile, the liberties and power that the states hold, while leaving the central gov't weak, are discouraging interstate commerce and relations as each state were more concerned about their own respective territories rather than the good of the nation, so much so that they start fighting against each other again. To give up a little Liberty for Security, that they may gain a pound of new Liberty, is a bargain indeed.
@@alexanderchristopher6237 that's not what the quote means. It's not temporarily giving up a liberty for secuirty to later bet more. Its permantely sacrificing rights for safety. For example I met I guy who said he'd rather live in a One-Party state if it meant a stable economy, that's what that quote means. Giving up rights for safety and nothing else.
I love how political the prequels were, it was my favorite aspect of the movies. I think the prequels would work perfectly as a series for this reason. Maybe one day
