One of the best demos I've heard. Very professional because: 1) The sources are great ! 2) Level Matching is kept all the time (between bypassed and not) 3) There is enough time to hear the sound with/without bypass 4) You really turn the knobs all the way, to show it all. A lot of demos don't keep it level matched when bypassing. A lot of demos have bad sources A lot of demos switch to Bypass for only 0.5 a second A lot of demos don't show the whole range of knob values.
This video just sold me on one. Great tone. Chandler makes great stuff. I have the little devil pre. Going to pick one of these up when I go to Sweetwater gearfest in a few weeks
I recently put together a 500 series rack. I bought 10 compressors to demo and the TG Opto was one of my favorites. It was top 2 of the 10 compressors.
@@tovsteh Even thought the TG Opto is solid state both the Retro and TG sound like a tube circuit. Keep in mind the Retro has a few tubes in it. I found the TG to extend even deeper in the lows which is why I paired it with the BAE Preamp. I paired the Retro with the Lachapelle preamp which also contains a tube in the preamp. Hope this helps.
@@ManCaveStudio Thank you for that feedback, much appreciated. I am leaning towards the TG Opto hearing how capable it is and also I won't have to worry about replacing tubes. I also love the old school military/control system style look of it.
I have a doublewide... Been looking at these as well, I do not have a chandler but the for what it's worth the doublewide is absolutely hands down one of my best purchases... I track a lot of vocals and I put it as an insert in protools and always run their vox through it post recording as an insert so they can hear themselves better and print it later. It's really world class... even when it's JACKED it is hard to make it pump
Have you ever used the Pultec 500 EQ in conjunction this unit? I've seen your Pultec 500 Demo. I also have a Blue Stripe 576 IGS which sounds good, but the Chandler is so much more natural and way less compressed sounding. I'm a folk acoustic singer songwriter and wondering if you've used it. The Chandler sounds magical and I'll say it again natural. Wow!
Glad you like the sound. Male vocal was recorded somewhere else and I wasn't told the mic they used. Female vocal was also recorded elsewhere but probably a Neumann TLM 103.
I've been using an all in one interface for a long time, and was thinking about venturing out into the analog pre world. I'm seeing these "500 series" modular units everywhere. Do you line level out from those preamps into a dedicated AD converter or what kind of interface?
Acrylic Recording Glad you like it! I believe the male vocal was recorded with a U 87 ai, but I don’t know what preamp (it was just sent to me for mixing). The female vocals were Neumann TLM103 and SSL Alpha Channel.
It sounds good but it also sounds like the release is unforgiving. Sounds like its a pain in the ass trying to avoid pumping on this thing. DO u find your self having issues with that?
The release during this video was mostly on the fastest time that means the comp will most likely start pumping (like any other comp would do). Just set the release on a slower value and the pumping will be gone.
I have both the microphone cassette and the 5254. They both sound 3D. The 5254 sounds a little cleaner and more hifi. The hard knee sounds more agressive than the 6:1 ratio on the 5254/535 platform. In the case of day to day recording, mixing, and mastering tasks both get the job done and you’re not missing out on too much if you pick either.
@@LocaliLLocano very helpful opinion, that made me decide that i would prefer this one cause i like color and less hifi. I just need nice tracking compressor to pair with mimas
I have both. They are both excellent. The Opto is a bigger sounding compressor under heavy use however the color of the 535 is also very desirable. Out of the 10 compressors I demoed both the Opto and 535 were keepers.
think that are great for tracking vocals? i need a 500 series comp for vocals i have two options this chandler opto compressor or retro instruments doublewide!!
Isaac Cardenas I’ve enjoyed this for tracking vocals, but it can be difficult to dial in attack and release sometimes. I’ve heard great things about the Retro. You’d probably be good either way!
