কিন্তু আমার মনে হয় বাংলা (বা যে কোনো স্থানীয়) অক্ষরমালা শেখার মূল্য আছে। যারা প্রবাসী, তাদের কথা আলাদা। আমরা তো অক্ষর শিখেছি বেশ স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই। সময় লেগেছে। কিন্তু সে তো হাঁটা শিখতেও সময় লাগে। তাই বলে কি হাঁটা না শিখে হুইল চেয়ারে চড়ে বেড়াবো?
My loftiest respect to Suniti Babu notwithstanding not all Bengali words pronunciations can be represented by Roman letters.Anybody who have seen the oodles of RU-vid comments or SMS messages on the mobiles in Roman letters knows how ridiculousthe suggestion is. Running helter skelter is not really way to solve a serious and solution for a far reaching problem.
Proper nouns of English origin should not be tampered with in Bengali translations. They should be just left as they are.It is not done in any language around the world in works translated from English. In our case it is also desirable to retain the English spelling.In my time more often than not when a writer chooses to write an English word in Bengali letters, they spell in the way the author thinks the pronunciation ought to be, to some hilarious comic effect. They simply forget that English is not a phonetic language. To give an example, from the top of my head once I came across a Bengali novelette in which the author was confused between the words Marionette and Marinade while putting in Bengali letters. Such faux pas are inexhaustible across the whole span of Bengali literature.
