Congratulations on this feature! The things you’ve managed to accomplish on this layout are insane. I read the article, and I’m glad to see Chandwell came off looking wonderfully. You have much to be proud of!
Congratulations! "It's not as grim as you think it is"??? What a slogan! And what consummate artistry you display with your town- so impressive, cheers!
Congrats on your BBC coverage! And I enjoyed the review of your town's characters. Having such people and a solid, credible backstory adds so much to the enjoyment of your viewers as well being a guide and inspiration for your modeling efforts. Cheers from Wisconsin!.
We have a saying in Oz "You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much" A bit of an hyperbole really because I have watched Chandwell grow from its early days, and Michael has done a fantastic job with creating a town with a history, one that I can really believe in. And he listens, and acts on suggestions from his viewers. Thank you my man.
Just seen the news report after it was posted on our local neighbourhood page (West Yorkshire). Your modelling skills are superb, you've done an excellent job and I love how you have referenced local landmarks. Subscribed :)
I don't see how you can possibly take any pride in that. Letting the town hall turn into some seedy nightclub? My wife and I were married there! Sure it was a small affair, but and we were all a tiny but tight, and during our honeymoon I found out that apparently size does matter, but to let this sort of thing happen is pretty small of you (excellent work BTW! )
Well done for the recognition, I too saw it on my BBC updates, although I've been watching your channel for some time I still enjoy each video. No your April fools episode didn't fool me it was still funny . Carry on Michael.
Continue to try and wrap my head around your artistry. You may have mentioned it before but do you have a background in architecture? Highly impressive work.
No - not at all. When I started this I didn't even know basic architectural terms like "pediment" or "architrave". It's all just from observation of real buildings, and some assembling of Scalescenes kits.
I found your channel on the BBC video and have now subscribed and watched loads of your videos. I love it. Interestingly, the 20th Century Society have now petitioned to have the Shipley clock tower listed!
Wonderful to hear, that your astounishing layout has got even more attention by the coverage of the BBC. We are so glad, that you have found your love for building such elaborate models and telling such funny, sad and realistic stories around your creative doing. Keep up the amazing work, Michael! To me, this grey Yorkshire town is the destilate of a song line by the Clash: "I got my motorcycle jacket // But I'm walking all the time" All the best Valentin
I just discovered your channel today after seeing the BBC coverage. I love what you've created! As a local I recognise a lot of the buildings in Chandwell, including the fabulous Shipley Clock Tower and the turquoise market grill behind. Absolutely stunning craftsmanship. Now I need to check out your other videos to get myself up to speed with the goings on in Chandwell.
It’s a beautiful building. I even considered using it as the front-facing “other side” of Market Street a couple of years ago but chose North Parade instead.
Brilliant video Michael. Chandwell is one of my favourite channels. I find it very inspiring, although I model in 00 gauge. My eyesight is only just good enough for that. Keep up the good work. Roy.
What, Chandwell is fiction! But it can't be, I've booked a long weekend break in the hotel and a guided tour with Brittney for wife's birthday, couldn't think of anything else she would rather, LOL. Keep up the good work Michael.
Your BBC recognition is fully deserved and only helps improve the image of this wonderful hobby to those who have the wrong idea about us enthusiasts! As I live in Sheffield I watch Look North but have missed seeing you on there, when was it? I’ll look forward to catching it later!
I've only been following your channel since the beginning of April, but brilliant to see you getting this kind of attention. I've been working forwards from some of your ealier videos so I hadn't realised the depth of storytelling you've created around Chandwell. I was already so impressed with your scratchbuilt models, but this video summary was an absolute thrill to watch. Thanks for sharing this with us all🙂
I think it would be good if Chandwell got rid of the horizontal lines in its sky, where the paper joins are. As an artist I do a fair few landscapes and streetscenes and noticed something odd. Based on talking to people, the human eye/brain seems to accept without question any vertical lines going into the sky, but jars on horizontal ones, don't ask me why. I get round this by painting any pylon/telephone lines (that are actually strung like piano wire in real life) into graceful curves ('sagging') and people really like it! Anyway...if you did all your sky joins vertically, it would greatly add to the realism of Chandwell.
Good tips! Quite a few people comment on my sub-standard backscene, but Chandwell is a project in "what can I do myself", and sadly buying a commercial print, or paying a printer to do my backscene felt like a betrayal of that ideal. There are some things that you have to buy, such as fencing and trackside signs etc. But I am happy with my lined sky. It's interesting what you say about horizontal lines though. I will be less "for the cause" with Chandwell version 2 and I will take a different approach to the backscene, I think.
i've learnt so much from you over the last few years of Chandwell videos... keep it up, and one day I hope to produce something half as good as Chandwell!
Every week I drive up Wharf Street in Sowerby Bridge and can't help thinking about Chandwell when I see the clock tower (which is stuck at 11:11 [don't know if that's deliberate]). I really agree that the characters and background you have created help to add purpose and fun to the layout in addition to helping you to remain focused when making decisions, as you eluded to in the video. Keep up the great work, Michael - I'm looking forward to seeing the current set of buildings reaching completion. Cheers. Simon.
your layout is exusite and an amazing insight into what can be done with cheap readily available materials at a minimal cost the added stories of the history add that bit extra , i always watch your videos first before others when they come out as always very interesting well done on your consistent high quality
Hi Michael. Congratulations on the BBC reports. It's lovely to think that perhaps many more people will come and join us Chandwell fans and enjoy your wonderful work. Keep it up!
Another comment by me but it was great you made the headlines at the start, and Michelle Scott? I’ll be writing in to Anne Robinson about that. Plus I’m guessing the girl sat in the middle didn’t get the number 😝😝😝
It was good coverage I thought. I really liked the intro on the afternoon news rather than evening news. Photos of Chandwell all over the back of the studio. Looked amazing.
@@Chandwell It was really good Michael and sadly I got to iPlayer too late to see the lunchtime programme. Using a bit of imagination though I can picture the studio background really looking the business!
Your layout reminds me exactly of towns in the north from 1980s & 1990s when I travelled the area for work. Funnily enough I've fond memories, despite the grime and rundown nature, mainly because of the architecture and the people. I'm a southerner and I've always warmed to northerners, much more friendly on the whole, I've also lots of friends in Brum, my second home in many ways. Congrats on the BBC airing too - that helps the hobby no end and leads others to therapeutic endeavours too. We were lucky enough to have my dad's small garden line as part of a BBC series. The layout has a life of its own and has inspired youngsters to go to uni to study engineering or get involved in heritage railways, and to model their own lines. We've also been privileged to raise funds for charity using it. We didn't know that the layout would become its own entity, a real railway in miniature and a force for good. Model railways are a multifaceted force for good💜✌️👍😊
It is in the Humphreys Room in the Royal Scot - it’s mentioned in this video: Finished at last! This Victorian hotel was scratch built from card in 170 hours ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AhbU_TdFDLM.html
Your places and landmarks are very well done. I don’t know if they’re identical to the original buildings, but they’re perfect in Chandwell. Please keep it up. From Australia.
Dear Sir, Congratulations on the article! (it is a wee bit different outside the UK, methinks, but must be the same contents) I happen to read BBC News almost everyday. Cheers frOm Brazil!
Ooh Britney, I'm in love, lass! Brilliant video Michael, the backstory really makes it but the quality of your model making is what keeps us coming back for more. Can I now sing a 'Soul'-ful song to Britney? "Don't give up on us baby, don't make the wrong feel right..." all very apt for Chandwell 😊
Hi Michael, count me as one of the people who found you through the recent BBC profile. I've enjoyed watching some of your RU-vid videos. Do you have one that discusses the types of paper, adhesive, and paints you like to use?
Hello! Welcome to Chandwell! Thank you for saying hi. This video is all about the tools and materials I use: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--QvdNFST7WU.html And this one is all about getting the most from the paper and printer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WrdONlK3BJU.html I hope they are useful.
It would appear that you have become the West Yorkshire Banksy, only less elusive. I bet there are councils holding meetings to discuss why none of their buildings have made it onto the Chandwell landscape and action groups being formed to rectify the omission. Move over Miss Scroggins, your crown as the most well known celeb is now Michael “Banksy” Scott’s. Can I get a signed photo please. 😂
We were over in Ilkley at the weekend, driving through Shipley to get there. I found myself paying more attention to the buildings than the shops we were going in to! I'm not a railway modeller, but I've now had a couple of goes at scratch building with card, thanks to your Inkscape series.
Congratulations for being on the Beeb. The back story enhances the concept of the various buildings. You have achieved much in 4 years and the propect of at least 4 more years is a delight, and then as you say, who knows. Please keep on keeping on as Chandwell is one of the main layouts I follow. Arthur
Long time viewer, but still amazed by this superb layout and all the work that has gone into it. The history and characters only add to the enjoyment. Keep it up Michael !
Looks fantastic and caught the atmosphere of that kind of town. Can’t help but think I might have been to Club Passion late on a couple of Saturday nights a long time ago…?
I would love some Neil oldie style story style running videos as there much more fun than. Norm running videos. Can you also put a repritable (can’t spell) well respected and clean pride mason lodge as I want to use there services and van with branding on my layout set north York’s
You know, when authors write their books, they really flesh out some characters and if they never release a compendium; wiki or something, some of those things you never find out. This is great, I feel it adds a great depth to the model railway - helps extend the world in my opinion
Just started watching your channel, made me laugh with your depiction of Shipley Clock Tower and the Market - and Mr Cappers niteclub, I live in Shipley, have done all my life.
Hello Michael, posted yesterday but I think YT bounced my comment as there was an external link - however that’s not a bad thing. It’s given time to see that you’ll be on Look North tomorrow (which, due to the wonders of modern things like iPlayer will be played in a house in East London!) and also I can see you’ve picked up 500 or so subscribers who all seem really pleased to have found the channel. Really pleased for you! You’ve done a great job on representing the hobby and the TV item is richly deserved, proper chuffed Michael 👍🏼
Fabulous and so well deserved. The Chandwell slogan just makes me laugh as I have something similar for my home town but it is pre watershed so will save that for a later date. Off to watch the Look North link now. Again Michael, well done great news for you and great news for the hobby.
I'm surprised there are so few subscribers to this outstanding channel. Perhaps with its focus more on buildings than on rolling stock and running trains narrows the audience. I'm interested in all of it, though I don't have my own layout or plan on building one. But the buildings created here are really works of art and I love the demeanor of our host who has a bit of humor he sprinkles on the whole affair. Well done!
Thank you very much indeed! Yes, I noticed that most of the typical "model railway" viewers/commenters dropped away after the first year or so. I don't really know what my "typical audience" is at the moment.
You are so right on the fictional background helping you shape the town. It takes your models from a cardboard box looking grim/pretty to a part of the history of the town.
Well what a great Update and News Michael. Welcome to those who have joined since the wonderful BBC article. As a Subscriber & Member I really enjoy Chandwell as a whole. I discovered Chandwell as Michael was starting the Mammoth and Spectacular Royal Scot Hotel build. Then his ideas and comments for what became Back Market St, with all its twists and turns. Chandwell is a Timemachine back to that era, in both place and railway and has only got better and more complex since then. Chandwell like many real places in Northern England in the early 1990’s were a little run down, rough around the edges, there were many grand plans of Urban regeneration, which in time amounted to very little. I have had the privilege to accompany Michael on a short inspiration walk around Brook St, Ilkley looking at both the grander front and more functional rear. I waiting patiently till he models the back walls of latest Station Rd Row. The back wall is a very Interesting prototype, if Michael can model it like the previous building rear walls, Back Market St, rear of High St on Water Lane, and the 1st part of Station Road. I know Michael is always interested in what can be seen in the real world. I think it’s sometimes that eye for the little details which really gives a sense of time and place. It’s also Michael slightly tongue in cheek approach to his work, and encouraging others into this world that adds to the overall brand. Thank you Michael for such a wonderful Channel and sharing your work. Ian
Hi mate. Have you noticed today (Monday) that there is a little 'miniatures' graphic at the RU-vid logo? I think you might enjoy some of them. There are some beauties in there. Just thought I'd let you know in case you missed it. Cheers.
@@Chandwell They change the logo periodically, for example .... Americas 250th Birthday graphic or Einsteins birthday and when you click on it, it takes you to videos about that subject rather than normal RU-vid home page. Anyway, on Monday, they were celebrating miniatures. I clicked on it and got lost for an hour checking out all the great stuff. Not to worry.
Paused your good self to watch your appearance on the Beeb. A double Chandwell instalment! How much Chandwell can we take in one sitting. Congratulations on your rise to stardom. Watch you don't tread on Brittney's toes.
Michael. Chadwell is a wonderful, atmospheric layout and fully deserves all the coverage it is getting in the media. I look forward to every video. Pete.
Huge congratulations for the feature. What was interesting was seeing the results of someone else take video of the layout. I am so used to seeing it up close in your videos I kinda forget quite how tiny it all is!
Awesome as ever. But it's the little touches that really make me keep coming back. For example, the use of grocers' apostrophes on the A-board outside The Weir, or the tuft of foliage on the ledge outside the empty flats above the Earl Chandfield. Keep at it mate, it's genius!
