Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
The Chang Feng is named for the company that developed it, the Chongqing Chang Feng Company Ltd in (you guessed it) Chongqing. It was designed by one Qing Shangsheng, who had ample prior firearms design experience (including the Type 64 and 67 pistols and Type 80 SMG). The design is based around a helical magazine inspired by the Russian Bizon and the American Calico. Early patterns used the magazine as a buttstock, but it was moved up on top of the weapon. The early versions were also chambered for the Chinese 5.8mm pistol cartridge before being changed to 9x19mm to better suit an export market.
The final production version included a threaded muzzle device for suppressor use, a rear-mounted rail for a variety of optional optical sights, and a telescoping stock. It was sold to a number of Chinese security agencies as well as being exported to Myanmar, Venezuela, and Uganda.
Many thanks to the French IRCGN (Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie) for generously giving me access to film this very rare specimen for you! They maintain an extensive firearms reference collection as part of their mission to fight crime and international terrorism.

Holy crap! An SMG maker with a reasonable expectation of the effective range of their creation! It's not a bad design, fine for a cheap police/prison/security service SMG. 50 rounds are sufficient for most of those people without a reload being necessary. @@leroyjenkins4811 Lots of people can accurately shoot a pistol over a hundred yards. If someone can't shoot a sub gun accurately that far it's their own fault. The cell phone generation doesn't understand that life wasn't always like today. There was a time when communication and back up was a very long time away. Even the French started ww2 without radios in their tanks let alone all their infantry having radios. If help is always a messenger running back to a Morse code station and then reinforcements a long march from getting to you, you are going to take whatever you can get. If that means shooting a subgun at long range hoping you and all your friends will land bullets close enough to get the other side to stop and take cover than so be it. This gun Jesus doesn't understand real life isn't a video game or a shooting match. You don't have to hit what you are aiming at to get someone to decide continuing to assault your position isn't a good idea. When your life is on the line a big win is simply getting the other side to take cover.

@xavierh.5102
@xavierh.5102 Год назад
helical mags are pretty cumbersome to carry, the idea could be to have 1 drum on the gun and then box mags in your rig. no last shot bolt hold open means you might not even have to remove the empty helical mag before loading a box magazine and firing.
@TheOriginalFaxon

@kylehenline3245
@kylehenline3245 Год назад
@@xavierh.5102 I was thinking the same thing. That's actually a really clever idea if you just have 50 rounds in your pdw and then can then immediately transition to box mags shared with a pistol, would be great for security details and other under the jaket type stuff. And theoretically you could then design it to actually trigger last round hold open from the box magazine follower only. But it seems the production version gave up on the dual feed all together, which is probably a good indicator of the complexity of doing something like that
@Taolan8472
@Taolan8472 Год назад
@@joelau2383 i think it could have been solved fairly easily by having two magazine catches for the box mag. One that holds it just low enough to not engage the sear and then loading position. But the opposed feeding ramps/tongues on the bolt itself may cause issues.

@@WoobooRidesAgain It could be as simple as the Gendarmes wanted an example for study. Many state security services buy an example or two of new weapons just to keep current on the technology. Considering it is has been less than twenty years since these guns became available for sale, I would be surprised if a confiscated weapon was already cleared for the general collection. A confiscated weapon would have to be held as criminal evidence until a number of legal steps had been followed, and the more serious the crime, the longer the process to complete those steps. Any criminal with a machinegun in France is probably going to be processed for a VERY long time.

It's funny, but a year or so ago I needed a couple of parts for my Calico M100-P and so called them up and did a direct order of the parts. In the conversation I was talking with the head of the design department as I had a couple of questions and they had transferred me to him. I asked him two things, when if ever they would be doing the guns in 45ACP and then I also asked him about reversing their magazine so that the design would be more compact. He said that both of those things were in the works. Time will tell. But with that said, Calico could really improve their design by just reversing so that their mags feed from the back end of the mag instead of the front end.

I know it's not necessarily widely loved (and for legitimate reasons) but I really like these mini-bullpup SMG designs. I find them visually appealing. Had a dream once I was at a firing range with something like this, except for some reason I had to rotate the magazine between shots... and the lever was on the side. Funny in its own right.

That fellow made some interesting designs, this one included. It would be a nightmare to get this up to production, but I bet it would sell well in the US...not well enough to try and do it but still would be popular, ha.

Most likely from Africa via Uganda. They could have easily gotten out of Ugandan inventory and into the hands of factions that France is fighting against/with in Africa.

Its all about capacity. The idea behind these helical magazines, and the radial drums that predate them, is to have enough ammo for a typical firefight on the gun without needing to reload under fire. The helical magazine lets you contain a lot of ammo in a compact package, and also up close to the frame of the gun so easy to balance. In concept, its pretty close to an ideal magazine for an SMG/PDW. In execution, nobody has met the expectations of that concept.

@@Taolan8472 That is why the first thing FN did for the P90 was design a round that they could flip 90 degrees easily. Same concept with much better execution.

I like my Calico, it's fun to take to the range and just keep shooting. The M100 holds 100 rounds of 22 and so you can start your firing, fire a round every 5 seconds or so and that is 500 seconds, not quite 10 minutes of more or less continuous fire.

This looks like something you could realistically build yourself, specially with the aid of a 3D printer. It would be great to switch between a 50 round helical magazine and an additional 32 round Glock mag. 82 rounds in such a small packet is crazy. Design a spare 32 round mag into the foregrip and you have a walking ammo depot :) But then I do that maths on the weight,.....sigh. Got to train at the gym first :(

The helical magazine in the stock seems like such a great idea. I get that it means you can't have a collapsible or folding stock, but it seems like such a good idea there must be some place for it.
